In this video I react to Showbiz by Muse.
/ deanwolfe
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on KZfaq. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

This is one of my favourite Muse songs. And yes they are more alt rock than progressive, but still such an awesome band. I find I need to listen to their songs a few times to fully appreciate just how wonderful they are. I tend to enjoy their older catalogue (before 2006) more than the newer.

If you doubt what Thom Yorke was saying. listen to Pearly, Trickster, Exit Music for a Film, and Big Boots. These songs were the blue print for the early Muse signature sound. It's obvious. Anyone with ears can hear that. So he was right he invented them. He was probably ok with them being heavily influenced by Radiohead. But it was the slack us of part which maid him have bad blood for them, for obvious reason.

Hiya, Dean. 🙌 So one of my all time favorite bands is Radiohead... Now I wouldn't group them in a progressive category, but more in their own genre, more experimental, I guess. However, one of their finest songs is very progressive! If you've never heard the song Paranoid Android from them, I would highly recommend this song to react to, don't think you'll be disappointed!!! It's on the OK Computer album (I dont recommend the video version... too distracting). For me it is one of those type of songs/bands that you remember where you were and what you were doing the first time you ever heard them.

@Dean: Catalyst is off their first album and was one of the singles if I remember correctly. So it’s still rather „tame“ on the prog side and veers a bit more into alternative (think „if Incubus was more experimental“). The album „Frames“ is more „mature prog“ in my eyes, if you want to come from that angle.

@deanwolfechannel
@deanwolfechannel 3 жыл бұрын
great question and not an easy one to answer. I think it's a good topic for a video actually. I'd like to address the whole topic of what makes prog music progressive...I think experimental is a foundation or pillar in prog music. It has to be daring. Experimental is only experimental if it doesn't cross over into the music in a fundamentally altering way...
@carlosmiguel-ld4rz

@@deanwolfechannel "my" definition of progressive music is one that goes beyond the conventional boundaries of music: it doesn't follow the same structure as 80% of music, it's not always 3 mins (there are songs only 40 seconds long (Stop, by Pink Floyd), others are 40 mins (Thick as a Brick, by Jethro Tull). It's a kind of music that has "no rules". You can have hard rock with an orchestra and then some folk! At least that's how I see progressive music. Having that in mind, progressive music needs to be experimental, so I don't have a really distinction between the two terms. It would be nice to listen to your opinion in a video

@@deanwolfechannel Absolutely a wonderful idea! Maybe feature parts of songs that are "un-prog" like stuff from Radiohead (Paranoid Android), Alice in Chains (Rooster), Portishead (Strangers), Nine Inch Nails (Reptile), The Cure (Fascination Street), Björk (Army of Me), David Bowie (Blackstar), Rage Against the Machine (Know Your Enemy) then tell us if you think it's experimental pop, progressive rock, experimental electronic, hybrid, industrial, straight up rock or alternative rock, etc... You could even do a short series between album reacts. "Types of Progressive Rock" or "Does this Song Fit?" Haha! So much other good music from the 90's can't be classified or, like Björk and Trent Reznor, they just said "fuckit- I'll make my own genre!" It would be cool to see you dive into those... 🌀

Dean, you say it was the metal element that put you off the later prog. Did you listen to Marillion and if not then you should now. Start with the first Album ‘Script for a Jesters tear’. Much closer to early Genesis than metal.

Dean Wolfe - As you liked it, maybe do an album react to ‘Script for a jesters tear’ or do a quick listen to track one to see if you recognise it and if so maybe move on to do the next album which was ‘Fugazi’. If you want to dive into what I think is the best album of the Fish period ( Fish was the lead singer) then IMHO the 3rd Album ‘ Misplaced Childhood’ is probably the best. After album 4 ‘ Clutching at Straws’ Fish left the band and Steve Hogarth took up the vocals. This was quite a change as Fish was very distinctive but the band survived and retained a large and loyal following. For me the 4 Fish albums were the best and contain prog rock that stands up very well against that of the 70’s but I am sure there will be others who disagree and prefer the later albums. Might be good to get recommendations for the best Steve Hogarth led album and do a compare and contrast with Misplaced Childhood. One warning and I really had to concentrate to do this myself. If you do Script for a Jesters tear, try not to compare with Gabriel period Genesis. On first hearing it sounds very similar and I have heard them put down and dismissed by fellow Genesis fans for copying however if you can set the superficial similarities aside there is some great original music being produced.
