Mushroom Foraging for Hundreds of Pounds of Hen-of-the-woods/Maitake

While foraging mid-October in southwestern Ontario, all of these hen-of-the-wood mushrooms and lots more were found. Several hundreds of pounds all together (although we only harvested a fraction) (also the big hen was realistically around 40 lbs). Scientifically known as Grifola Frondosa, they are great to eat as a vegetarian meat alternative full of beneficial compounds. AKA King of Mushrooms, I suspect this "Hen-of-the-Woods" ripening right around Thanksgiving has something to do with the origins of Thanksgiving. This would have been a celebrated source of food for our hunter and gatherer ancestors all around the world for all human history. Treasure of nature!

Beautiful find. I really wish you left more of this Hen on the second tree, that oak. I always leave a third. Doesn’t feel right to strip it all from the tree for a lot of reasons.

First you need a good few days of rain and then head out looking for oak trees. Mushrooms need rain, check in summer & fall. Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Hope to find some of these this year. I'm across the pond from you guys , northern NY. I'm usually deer hunting this time of year. My furry partner can't go afield this time of year so it limits my foraging.

Lol ya not 80, but likely 40. The weight does not increase linearly with size because the dense stems of the big ones make it heavier.

Haha no I’m not, I just know that it’s really the oils in the plant that cause the reaction. If your gentle and the plant is not broken then the oils remain in the plant
