Yes there are several trees commonly called ironwood. Here in Pennsylvania we call ostrya virginiana ironwood. Also called hophornbeam it is very similar to your European hornbeam as the names imply. So happy to find your channel Luke! Happy foraging!

Hey Luke, sorry if missed it in a previous video but why did you change knives? And as always, I'm very jealous! It is still dry in the UK, I'm waiting patiently for rain and mushrooms!
@LukesMushrooms
@LukesMushrooms Жыл бұрын
Good luck with the rain then :) About knives, I have 2 of them. This Swiss one is my favorite as it's sharper and more comfortable to use. Opinel is handy because of the brush and is lighter weight. When I don't go foraging alone, I borrow one of my knives to my buddy, which was the case this time too :)

Hello Luke! Nice video, as always! Keep up the good work! I have a question, if you are kind to help me. Is there a specific altitude for the oak forests to find boletes and/or chanterelles in them? I've been today in a pretty low altitude forest, after some good rain, and I couldn't find any of them :(
@LukesMushrooms
@LukesMushrooms Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Regarding the oak forest, it depend's a lot on the location. Also mushrooms may sometimes appear even 10-14 days after the first proper rain if it's dry, so I just recommend to visit the forest regularily.

I just have this classical way of thinking, how to preserve the mushrooms for future growth. Maybe its too out dated. @@LukesMushrooms

Yeah, some time ago I used to cut too, but nowadays experts say it isn't any better and there are a few reasons why to pull the whole mushroom out instead.
