Dean's Woodworking

Turning a Mushroom from a common limb. This involves green wood and turning a mushroom on a wood lathe. I will walk you through the process from layout to finished product.
Wood turning can be an enjoyable hobby and this is something that you can make in just a few minutes and share with your family and friends.
This is also a product that sells well in craft shows and local markets.
Have fun in the wood shop and stay safe, stay healthy, and happy turning.

Nice demo on doing a mushroom. The irregular top is the only way to go. I love the look of it that way. Kind of like the Black Locust droop bowl I did. It has a very rugged rim on it. Gary

It's easy to get the tool rest nearer to the the undercut. Just point the LHS of the tool rest close to the stalk of the mushroom at 90 deg along the undercut.. I prefer a parting tool for a deeper undercut but the gouge works too.

I have done a few small ones. But when I try to do the bigger ones, they split. I had the same problem with the gnomes. What am I doing wrong?

The secret is when turning green wood coat it with danish oil or Minwax antique oil finish as soon as you get through turning it then the next day put another coat and once you have three coats on there you will get very little if any cracking at all

I see you use the Minwax antique oil finish a lot. Approximately how long does it take to dry & degas? I am beginning to make items to sell for the holidays and just want to plan enough time for the finishing part.
