In August 2016, I was involved with well known DJs from the UK in a charity event (The Brixton All-Day Charity Event). At one point when the beat was getting very hypnotic and the crowd was close to a trance, a DJ from Manchester tore one of my art work from the wall behind him ( I contributed my art work to be auctioned off), covered his face with it, and started quite a Bacchic dance with the crowd punching the air with their fists in unison in sight of this. I was mesmerized by the archaic, primitive, frenzy scene that took place in a modern venue such as Pop Brixton in London! Luckily my little daughter witnessed this moment. One of the best days of our lives, such high energy, such great people, such color, and all for good... Another fun interview with Matthew Ingram, one of my favourite guests, putting such musical/mystical experiences into academic words.

I enjoy both of you having a raw conversation spanning into many ideas. At the same time the both of you enjoyably and nicely allowed ideas to come to deep themes, lesson, and insights, which was enjoyable to watch and listen to. I was definitely stimulated to ponder the subjects flowed through here and I am thankful for that. So thank you both! I would definitely watch another conversation between you two! 👌

Interesting discussion. “Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.” I think quite a few rock stars and the like make these Faustian deals consciously or unconsciously, and many are left tragically disillusioned in the end.

Bhagavan Das still travels (I think...not sure of his current itinerary) giving a really amazing course wherein he puts you in contact with your major chakras using a harmonium and sung bija mantras. This is the original esoteric use of raga, as well. Music is a form of spineplay. It has the power to get you high. Bhagavan Das's kirtan albums are really gorgeous. The album Now had a sort of hip-hop/Eastern production style by famous Beastie Mike D...a sound which has spawned its own subgenre on the West Coast (see MC Yogi)

15:59 I can do that. I am a musician, and can compose an entire symphony in my head. I write it down later. I can’t visualize to save my life, so I guess I’m compensating with audio. Strangely enough, a mantra does not work for me when meditating. No sound works for me when meditating. I find that quite odd.

Mmm...a mantra in effect is non related to meditation. What are you thinking it "should" be doing or archive? Im just curious to point you in a different direction towards it. Because it seems your perspective on meditating needs a knocking..? :)

Did Mr. Ingram say “I’m nearly fifty”. The heck with mysticism; I think he has discovered the fountain of youth. If you believe, as I do, that Vatican II was cleverly engineered to destroy the Roman Catholic Church, then the suppression of classical liturgical music and its substitution with jangly. strummy pap makes perfect sense. One is also reminded that Terence McKenna spoke in great detail about the little entities in his DMT flashes conjuring beautiful objects from pure sound.

Interesting subject, but whoa there -- you mention the Beat culture and then talk about rock'n'roll?! Didn't you mean jazz? (Jeff got there later) In the UK at least, an interest in Buddhism is evident in the 1800s, and in the US, at least Goddard was writing in the early 20th century. Might be worth considering how Eastern religion spread quickly in the West during the age of mechanical reproduction -- not so hip, but certainly parallel. In so doing, see how music is now everywhere and thus devalued -- as Jeff mentions later. Hindu classical music is extremely formulaic, and extremely intellectually complex, but to play the sitar is literally an exercise in yoga -- balancing that frail gourd on the sole of your foot as you try to tune those million strings is hard enough, before you even get into the groove! That does reinforce the teaching that the objective isn't to slip away to a dream world but to be more present. Q: Does anyone remember the sutta or sutra which claims Buddha said violence is forbidden except in defence of the religion? It's in Goddard, but I can't find it today.

...and Patrick Leahey: the finger cutting monk is not regarded as being enlightened by most practitioners. The poor young man who lost his finger was his only success. You almost lost me comparing punk with zen but I kept listening. There were a few jewels that made it worth while. I was heavily involved with the counter culture. It was killed by dope and phonies looking for dope and sex.

Please be respectful when talking about different cultures. Specifically, how much have you read about Zen (禪宗) and also practiced Zen? My view of Zen is not based on religious faith, but philosophic tradition, a strand of human epistemology. Yes, horrible things happened in Zen's 1500 years' of development in China. Remember, they were doing extraordinary ascetic practises to alter their mind states to reach for the nature of Buddha and become Buddha themselves. As they understood, that's the ultimate reality and truth, also the perfect human life. Therefore, please put into absolutely complicated contexts when understanding the so-called "violent" ways the Zen masters teach/assist his students to reach enlightenment. It is absolutely wrong and ignorant to interpret the Zen stories using your sense-based epistemic intellect. The value of Zen in human knowledge development has not been fully appreciated and vindicated yet. None of the 2800 viewers of this program, including myself, have the slightest idea as what's actually going on when the cutting of finger occured. However, I know you are wrong because I know theoretically what's going on and the rationality behind it.

@Angel Hair I am only talking about the historical Zen here. Not anything else. I also don't like any human cruelty towards all living things. In a society, ignorant people are the majority and good people try to improve humanity including Zen. You are not interested in getting facts and wisdom from Zen here.
@myyu5211
@myyu5211 3 жыл бұрын
@Angel Hair If you read the whole history of Zen in China, you will know the majority of them did not even eat meat, let alone to kill animals in a savage way. The Zen tries to teach people not to be cruel at all. Of course, I know there were some crazy people who thought they were Zen followers. But, learning and practising Zen will make this world better not worse. If you want to focus on a few crazy people in Zen and not the true values of the whole Zen, that's your choice.
@myyu5211
@myyu5211 3 жыл бұрын
@Angel Hair In my learning of Zen, I've never come across any historical records or writings about the cruelty to animals. I do welcome the exposrue of it if any because that will help Zen to become better. Again, please be clear, in my initial post to the guest, I only try to point out to him what he calls as "violence" in Zen in the specific instance between a master and student he mentioned is actually a special way of teaching to assist the student to reach enlightenment. This is absolutely important not to be both misunderstood and mis-interpreted because it is the essence of Zen's philosophy about achieving true identity of humanity.
