As the year winds down, new releases dry up, and for us music collectors something happens. It’s that time of year to reflect, take stock, and assess our lives a music collectors. But do you ever find yourself having the blues or feeling unfulfilled after hitting up a record store? Anthony and I address this and much more during our latest Sound Exchange Session as we discuss the Music Collecting Blues.

I’ve been discussing this with my wife and friends who are music collectors. I honestly think in 2024 I’m going to tone down my music collecting substantially. With the cost of cds and these box sets coming out being so expensive, with inflation and cost of living being so high, I just don’t have the disposable income for it anymore. It’s more of a priority to pay the bills and make sure there’s food on the table to eat. I’ll buy an album if I really like the band or if a cool box set comes out from a band I really like but that’s about it. I have a ton of stuff already and stuff I don’t have room for stored at my parents house. That’s a whole other discussion (the amount of space owning physical media takes up). Does anyone else feel this way in regards to music collecting at all or has felt this way at anytime in their lives?

Yeah they are taking advantage of us. I've pretty much bailed on collecting recently. If I really like something I'll snag but prices aren't equaling cause it's on colored vinyl. Makes me laugh at this point. Single vinyl records $30,$35,$40! Sometimes is f*cking ridiculous. It's shameful. Records I bought few years ago for $18-$22 are now $40-$45🖕 that's what I say.

Same here. Space is an issue and so is the constant struggle how much is too much. I have a large family so i definitely make sure bills and food come first. Life has gotten more expensive in general so i find i do let some releases go and stream occasionally. Constant juggling act😂

I buy alot or discogs and usually try and keep my budget to 10 dollars for most cds 15 I will do 20 its gotta be something I really want unless it's brand new that way I can get 2 cds for 10 then just one for 20 and I've been able to find alot of albums I've wanted for 10 bucks in really great shape almost brand new

I haven't been collecting music for a long time, but the end of the year is a good opportunity to go through my purchases (new and old releases) and see which albums I still really enjoy (and vice versa)!

2023 was one of my favorite years for newer bands putting out new music. Speaking of this time of year... December is a great time to digest all the new stuff you bought throughout the year. And I look at other people's "best of" lists and always find last minute gems. That's why I never finalize and post my "best of" list until the very end of December. This is the month of reflecting back and organizing/finalizing the final list. I even catch up with older releases I bought this year. December is the inch worm's tail catching up with the head.

I feel the same. December is great. I can't keep up with my favourite channel's best picks for the year. I know I'm going to buy a few more albums that I haven't heard of. Your shout out for The Anchoret was much appreciated. It came in at #3 on my Top 20. Just under Enslaved but above Haken.

Very good topic. Enough is never enough😂. Sometimes I think about taking a year off from buying so i can enjoy my collection more. Cause there's tons of stuff I should return to but im always getting new stuff too. Constant inner struggle for sure. But i love supporting the art , that always strikes a nerve to keep buying and support the artists we love or just discovered . Im always looking through my collection, cause i love it so much. Stay positive, have fun out there 💿🎶

Pretty much the one and only glam metal album to come out of New Zealand was by a band called Push Push. The album is called 'A Trillion Shades of Happy'. Another for your 'completest' list Brendon! Very hard to find. I'm here in NZ and have still yet to find a copy!

I actually like the slower tempo, gives me time to listen to new stuff I may only have heard once. And every year I promise myself not to buy as much next year and keep this slow pace, but I always end up returning to old habits... I used to have a long to get-list but it stressed me out. I cleared it out and now I don't plan for anything in advance, which feels much better. I've enjoyed a lot of 2023 albums, but I don't think anything can compare to 2022.

Hi Brendon - I'm not a new release guy !! Yes - I do buy new releases, however most of my purchases are from charity / op shops - I dont have the budget to buy new releases. I dont have lists, but when I come across something, then Ill decide if I want it - $2, $3 AUD I am a child of the 60's so theres heaps of stuff to collect from that era that I havent got. Cya Doug

Couldn’t agree with you guys more! There is a big lull in releases from about the first week in December until March. It’s a feeling of loneliness. I think you feel unfulfilled because the lack of releases makes the winter seem longer. Very little to look forward to from January until March. Anyway, I agree with that feeling you are describing/ trying to describe. It’s a real thing!

I sort of look forward to the lack of new releases - gets me excited for next year and look back and what I may have missed. 2024 has some great releases coming out, including the final Sum 41 album in March and the new Big Big Train and Hackett releases. There's so many great albums that I'm still looking to get physically, that a slow glut of albums is never a thing, there's always something new (old) to snag.

I use this time to go back and look for older artists/albums that I don't have time to pursue during the rest of the year. I also like to build playlists which I start and don't get to finish up during the year. It is also a great time to just sit back and listen to the things I picked up during the year. I watch best of 2023 on KZfaq and various publications I like -- I find stuff I might of missed (I don't own a record store to give me a head's up lol).

Digging applies to folks who look at the crates covered in dust, rat droppings, mould ....etc in more remote parts of the world, or unusual locations, looking for unknown or almost unknown vinyls. Hipsters don't do this, they collect vinyls that have received a lot of hype that often lack merit..

My end of year music collecting blues is probably a little different from most of your viewers. In December I switch to listening to Christmas music exclusively. I have about 40 Christmas albums that I've collected over the past few decades. I started out getting about one a year, but now I have so many that it takes me three holiday seasons to cycle through them. Whenever I think about getting more Christmas albums, I feel I shouldn't because I don't have time to listen to the ones I already have. At the same time, there are still some gaps in my collection that I would like to fill. Such are the problems of the music collector....

I dig the record over Anthony's left shoulder, where her privates are covered up with a purple sticky note. Is selling nudity on a record cover considered to be prostitution or in bad taste, instead of selling your music? Back to the topic at hand. I still need plenty of old stuff to add into my collection. Time to take inventory and make a top 100 or more of records/CDs you want to fill in gaps in your collection. Then, go out a find (some of) them. But Brendon might want to wait on new releases until mid-December, so you have during the Mid-December to March, when new releases emerge again. But then, getting Anthony's views on stuff is really awesome.

Now, what do you do Brendan You have well over 12,500 CDs and Records. I don’t know how you find the time each week to listen to the fun finds you pick up each week and make a video about. So just because there’s not as many new releases, I think you’ll be doing just fine with a plethora of things to listen to.

I do miss the days of walking into a record store and right there is a brand new (unannounced) release by one of my favorite bands. I am surprised and elated and buy it immediately. If there was advance notice of the release, seeing it in the record store wouldn’t have quite the same feeling of elation.

If you’re into metal, here are a few of the 4th quarter releases to maybe check out: Angra - Cycles Of Pain (modern euro metal) Savage - Glory Riders (classic metal) Icarus Witch - No Devil Lived On (classic sound) Satan’s Fall - Destination Destruction (band’s name somewhat deceiving - classic metal sound)

Records only get attention that first week or two, because there's another dozen albums being released the very next week. The number of releases today is magnitudes higher than in the 'classic' days, so it's impossible to give everything the same amount of time people used to. There's too much music for our attention spans. I also think this year was a disappointing one for new releases. The top couple were still great, but there was no depth at all to how many I'll be listening to into next year, let alone even further down the line.

Interesting topic, and for the most part I have to disagree. I’ve been in and around the music business for a long time. In many aspects. From working at record stores, to doing label work. I agree the cycle of an album has greatly diminished and that’s because the labels no longer push or “work” the album. I have been trying to get labels back into the habit of supporting their artist roster to prolong the sales (in whatever format you choose). The reason why artists drop singles months in advance is the precise reason what you said, to get their name back in headlines. Very few bands continue to release singles and videos after the record has come out. Extreme, Queensryche to that have bucked that trend and are continuing to drop singles. From being in the business, I am cool with announcing something is coming as long as it comes… rap titles are the biggest culprit of giving a street date and the. Having it pushed back for months. As for this time of year, I continuously find new releases, plus I’m always searching for CDs that I don’t have to complete certain artist catalogs, but that’s the process for me year-round. As for bands not doing anything, I have 42 concerts on my calendar already for the new year, most of them January through March dates… only if the labels and local radio would support and back these bands. It’s no longer the Nirvana syndrome. Fans when they know, they come out and support. Which makes me put partial blame on the fan, one Google click and you have all the info you need… but there are still those waiting to hear news on the radio or some type of media. And if they don’t, they just don’t know. Anyway… I found your take on this time of year and this discussion very interesting! Cool video! Waiting for the next.
