D-Low: Sound Sketch (Alton) is a masterclass in a much broader variety of sounds doing some metric modulation. It helps that D-Low is pretty much the beatbox GOAT!

Alem is essentially the last of his generation of beatboxer as he entered competition fairly young and resembles his predecessors more than those his age and younger and keeps the "basics" (meaning drum kit sounds) as completely core with less bass/bass drops though he is noticeably more musical than most his predecessors but less so than the body of as he dubs them "new school" beatboxers

Similar to how it is in the rap scene, "biting" is very frowned upon in the beatboxing world and originality is extremely appreciated. While there are the basic kicks, snares and hi-hats, there is also an incredibly large and continuously expanding pool of popular "meta sounds" (basses, different snares, special sounds etc). These are usually at some point invented by someone, then learned and spread by others. The unique combinations and applications of hundreds and hundreds of sounds and patterns makes up ones individual style which - like in every other field that involves creativity - develops over time. I've been beatboxing for 13 years and consequently have witnessed the very evolution of the beatboxing scene and its inhabitants. It is absolutely amazing how discoveries of new sounds and techniques quickly influence the entire scene and transform, expand and push the boundaries of beatbox and even music itself. It is an absolute joy to watch your appreciation of our art form!

3:20 Beatboxers always refer to the drum, hi hat and snare as the basics (everyone should know how to do it) from then you can learn by yourself different types of bass sounds, either using your vocal cords or your lips. And basically the other sounds you learn depend on the style you go for.

The kickback battles are really good for rhythmic composition. For example the winner, Dlow, used polyrythms a lot throughout the competition. which made the application of polyrythms in beat boxing more mainstream. Loving your expertise and insight! A lot of beatboxers have an really good intuitive understanding of rhythm but not a lot are trained or understand the terminology. Keep it up!

Actually if you want to hear a great Tag-Team(2 people beatboxing), I recommend watching Middle School, they are the most recent tag team champs and thus bring an insane level of beatbox to the scene You can check out their routines like Headbang, You're M.S., No Time or Combat Rituals (I personally recommend Combat Rituals)

There’s teams and groups of beatboxers that perform together, I’m not sure if by “do the exact same routine” you mean do the same sounds at the same time, then no, they usually take on different parts of a song.

3:40, there is. if you ever watch beatbox battles, you will probably see what is called a 'counter'. beatboxer A does a really impressive pattern or sound combo during his round, then beatboxer B will just copy it, an "i can do it too" kind of thing. generally its percussion sounds or 'the basics' that are considered to be the first thing you need to get good at, sometimes, a beatboxer will discover how to do a new technique, then other beatboxers will catch on. a while back, a beatboxer called two-h discovered polyphonic techniques in beatboxing, when he entered gbb (biggest beatbox event), his opponent was a guy called alexinho. two-h's polyphonic was brand new at the time, and it got a good reaction when he revealed it on stage. after his reveal, it was alexinho's round, and he just straight up did it too. probably one of the best examples of a counter in beatboxing as it came as a complete surprise. the best way to see the 'beatboxing beef' is to watch some gbb battle videos, people having their style used against them is an incredibly cool thing to see in a battle scenario. i would recommend: two-h vs alexinho colaps vs zekka king inertia vs helium

im pretty sure berywam is the best introduction to group ensemble beatboxing, but a good duo is d-low and frosty if youre looking for a duo :) (love you getting into beatboxing, found you from anime music breakdowns so this was a pleasent surprise)

YES. all beatboxers have different general styles and make unique things within them. This is technicality. Snares drums bases the technical of technical with percussion sounds and ALeM is the KING of tech. A world champ in fact. Also the “low froggy sounding bass” is called lip oscillation. And the “helicopter sound “ is a variation of inward drag and snares. Keep up the vids ! Love these.

It's basically a whistle that comes from the same position as a cough 3:18 there are certain combos that everyone learnes, such as the TkK (kinda like a snare roll) and BdB (kick rolls), inward Peh-K combos (snare doubles), drags (various combinations of inward and outward breath with different mouth filters applied). Some special are also really common, like inward/outward lip rolls and throat bass or inward/outward chest bass

It's amazing in beatboxing. Even the basics can be what an individual artist can focus on to create their own sound. A general usage of not nessesarily a "certain skill set' but a certain noise. Similar to how drumsets can sound different depending on brand or tune. Maybe have a look at some of the GBB beatbox circles from 2018/2019 to see some of this uniqueness! Sounds like high-hat's, snare and Kick are what most people tend to start with, from there it can grow in; speed (from 4/4 to 16/4) , tone/tune and quality. The Bass is a tricky one because artists have a full range of quality basses that can take years to hone. With already a deep understanding of certain Bass qualities the throat/mouth can create from things like Mongolian throat singing. Once this basics line is accomplished, every beatbox artist branches out into their own sounds and creation, using either what others have found or creating a completely new variant that suits the sound intended. symbols, electric noises, alien noises, zippers, whistles and so much more to fill in a create a mix of complexity and consistency. Things like whistles can be seen in: HEARTZEL | GBB 2021 World League Solo Wildcard. The element of beatboxing that I think is most profound is the fact that it is all human (excluding loop station and mic eq). The fact that every human is unique mixed with all the sounds one can make creates an experience of freshness and differentiation even if you are just a beginner! Yes, there is a language and names for all the sounds. Just like any instrument. Many are borrowed from the sounds they emulate, most special sounds get named by the inventor. All the pro beat boxers and most beat boxers practice the basics and fundamentals of kick bass , high hat clicks etc different snares . And as far as copying some will take a routine and spin it in their own image . New sounds are coming out all the time and other beatboxers will learn these new sounds and try to incorporate them . But there are plenty of different styles , techniques etc . A good example is ICE he I a new beatboxed to the GBB scene and new to most . I would recommend watching his 1st and 2nd GBB 2023 wildcard videos . Hope that helps in some way! And much love to the reactions! Looking forward to the next one.

6:35 There's an entire category usually of beatbox groups: Think acapella but usually more oriented towards beatbox with some of the teams incorporating multiple layers of rhythm instead of vocal harmonies, I'm partial to Sarukani because of this more rhythmic focus approach but I'm sure many others will have recommendations as well.

I'll preface by mentioning I'm a relatively new beatboxer, so I don't know as much as many others, but at 1:30, it sounds like a very soft whistle technique. I'm not sure which whistle, but another beatboxer who uses that whistle a lot is Zekka (so some call it the Zekka whistle). 3:42 there are definitely those who pick (what feels like) unoriginal styles, but there's not major beef I'm aware of for those using similar styles. If youre in a beatbox battle, you'll definitely be called out if you're doing some "same old" thing or trying to backpack off someone else's style, but other than that theres only minor amounts of poking fun at each other for not doing something new (which the community very highly values "new")

Yes, there are indeed beatboxing teams, and when they go unison with crazy-technical parts, it's just mind-blowing. It's easy to think of beatboxing as kind of a quirky thing... but when you see two or more doing a piece together, or you see a couple of beatboxers trading sequences back and forth, and each can do the other's sequences _exactly_ like they do, that's when you realize it's a very serious musical instrument like any other. The number of times I've watched someone like D-Low react to other beatboxers and go, "Oh my god, how did he do that!? I could never do that! Here, lemme try..." and then he just freaking nails it... xD

You should check out "If Only" by 4 solo beatboxer coming together and composing a beatbox quartet routine same way any musician would compose a music track. It's beautiful!!!

Yes there are tag teams. Check out the mad twinz. They are known as being the best and most in sync tag team there is. Also as far as beatboxers having signature sounds you should check out pash. He is one of the mad twinz. He has a lot of power and an array of signature or “special sounds.” Personally his my favorite beatboxer.

To answer your question about if a style is too close is there beef. The answer at a baseline is no but there is a bit of yes in there. Originality in your style is greatly valued so each beatboxer tends to have their own flair. However when you first start you will be a mix and mash of your favorites and that is accepted. At same time though many pros are similar to each other but what separates them is how they place their sounds and flow with them. The, yes, part of that comes with their being a minority that really pushes originality, like a lot, and will put down beatboxer who aren’t ‘original’ enough. Also their is a hand sign bestboxers will do on stage for biting style. I’m not sure how to describe it in text. One more thing is that sometimes in a battle a beatboxer will joke that their opponent isn’t original but no real beef between them like battle rappers.

So there are basics that every beatboxer practices, like "Boots and Cats". Then every Beatboxer builds upon this with their own styles. Also yes there are people who have very similar sounds and use them similarly as well, a good example would be Audical and Inertia.

Watch some of the videos of D-Low, he is kinda the GOAT now. Good in technicality like Alem and Helium but top in musicality aswell. Has a huge variety of basses and has a lot of unique sounds, also his beats are very well structured. I highly recommend you to watch some battles, because that's the only way to feel the whole vibe of beatboxing, D-Low is a god at battling, he can copy any beatboxer by just hearing them for a minute.

The sound list for beatbox is ever growing, and the contest to find new original sounds has actually created a culture where a lot of new beatboxers dont learn the basic fundamental sounds anymore.. at least not to this kind of level. Its a shame really... The basic fundamental is boots and cats. B-t-k-t Then people alter the kicks and snares to create new textures over the fundamental rythm sounds Then you have melodic sounds and bass sounds. Some people do routines that are basically all bass tones with very little melody or rythm.

Yes, there are a bunch of sounds that everyone knows and uses and there are some sounds only the people who invented them use, like the dlow zipper or the 626 effect which stitch invented. And copying is a thing almost evey beatboxer does since it helps them counter other beatboxers when battling them, one time a beatboxer called two h who invented a double voice sound and he only showed it to two people, one of them was Alexinho who learned how to do it only by listening to it and used it against h has in a battle a few weeks later

I can answer one of your questions concerning "standard repertoire" of sounds - short answer, the TL;DR, there isn't one. There are dozens of different ways to make one sound, and even the best beatboxers in the world can't do every single one. Some come pretty close but even those rare few, on the whole, pick the same sounds over and over because it fits their own unique style. Some sounds, which some people call "basic", some pros call "impossible". Even the same techniques sound different depending on who is making them, because everyone has a slightly different larynx, mouth, tongue, nose, etc etc. Some sounds are unique, or a signature, to the individual beatboxer, usually because they invented them or made the sounds popular. There's an entire rabbit-hole to fall down here, so make the most of your time in Wonderland.

the froggy noise is some form of lip oscillations but the terms I know (from 12 years of bbxing) are kicks, snares, hi-hats, throat bass, chest bass, vocal bass, vibration bass, inward bass, TONNNNNS of unique sounds like the BMG snare you hear often, its also referred to as a spit snare, a lot of names are given as a beatboxers name followed by the type of noise, the BMG snare was developed by a guy named BMG and named by the community to honor him. you've got Babelli bass which is again named after an older school legend in the community. Out of all of your questions, there is a phenomenal track out there.. Named (IF ONLY) Don’t you dare to let it sneak far of your ears.

Oh yes, definitely on the sounds and patterns everyone learns. Everybody learns the basic kick, hi-hat, and k-snare. You can learn it too! Start off saying (rhythmically), "Boots 'n cats 'n boots 'n cats" and gradually remove the vocalization and you'll be doing a decent, if basic, closed-hi-hat 8th-note groove. It's not too hard to progress from there to an open sizzle groove by extending the sibilants, though breath control is harder for that. Pretty much everybody also learns the 'pft' snare, which sounds crisper and more like a country snare, to the k-snare's pop/electronic sound, and/or the spit snare, which is more rock sounding. Of course, you have to learn to make enough of those same sounds _inward_ and get them to sound exactly the same so you can string together a continuous groove and not have to stop to breathe all the time. For me (very much a beginner) the k-snare is easiest to do inward, so I end up doing "Boots'n (outward) - ca (inward) - ts (outward/no lungs)" Everyone needs some kind of bass... the most common ones that are the easiest to learn because basically everybody does them sometimes growing up and in normal life, are fart bass and tongue bass (the classic pbbbbbbbbt sound for fart bass, and machine-gun sound for tongue base, sped up until it gains a tone rather than being discrete clicks). Lip rolls are much harder, because you've probably never done that with your anatomy before, but are very impressive. Those are the super deep bass notes you hear a lot. Once mastered, they also produce the cleanest tones out of the non-vocal bass options, to the point that someone like Gene Shinozaki can sound like he's doing polyphonic singing by doing such a smooth lip-roll it sounds like voice, and then harmonizing with it with vocals. There are a few types of vocal bass as well... inward bass being the most impressive of those, which D-Low is a grandmaster of... though obviously not everybody uses that. Alem doesn't, for example, and he's one of the very best. I don't think he lip-rolls either. From that point, you kind of start to specialize. There are basic patterns that are anatomically favorable for going fast. If you master those, come up with new ones, string them together for insane sequences, you're what's called a "technical" beatboxer. Alem is near the peak of that style. Others are more musical and melodic, and focus on making songs rather than just beats/drum solo style stuff, like Gene Shinozaki. Still others absolutely master the basics plus a couple of bass options, and perfect the sorts of grooves that get people jumping and dancing like mad. King Inertia is probably the very best at this. As you go up the sort of "beatboxer tier list" into like, the lower-end of competitive beatboxers, you get a couple of types. Some absolutely master their category like no others, like Alem, Alexino, King Inertia, Gene... and others start to combine a high but less extreme skill level in two or more categories. And then there's D-Low, who's a master of all three. He can just about keep up with the most technical fast beatboxers, has tons of musicality with a good voice and very good pitch, has gobs of groove with one of the strongest collections of bass sounds anywhere... _and_ he's a great battler who manages to project unconcern and confidence without seeming condescending about it, _and_ he's endlessly creative, always coming up with new songs and mastering new techniques, _and_ he works hard, _and_ he's good at the business side and has become so well-respected that he's often a judge... There aren't many on D-Low's level, if any. He has it all. He's even humble, to boot. He's one of those artists who you look at and feel like it's just not fair, heh.

Ok so generally im not aware of any beatbox beef and as far as i have seen in the last year or so, every time a beatboxer invents a new sound that lots of people really like they do a tutorial on it. some of them i heard sell theyre technices. but you can learn most of the sounds from tutorials. im not a beatboxer my self but i learnd to do throat base and a bit of chest as well as inward base. its sometimes hard to get to know what a sound is called but when you know theres probably a tutoral for it on youtube.
