Glad you can appreciate this stuff even if its not the most unique song in music. A lot of what makes this song (and the OP1) so good is there is a TON of cyberpunk context about the main character baked into the opening themes - whether its the lyrics or even just style of music. These two songs within context help make the song more interesting, but musically might not be better. In short, its all about the philosophy struggle of if an little girl lost her human body from a genetic diease, and got complete new prothestic ones as she aged mentally, is she still human and does she have a soul? (Hence the show title.) A lot of times the "lettuce spewing out of the sides of the sandwich" and the stark difference between the vocals and accompaniment is intentional because now as an adult she often can't decide if she is a human or machine and the layers mental/emotional gymnastics she is going through trying to understand who she is. Anyways, thanks for the reaction. Love your takes on stuff.

@@DrumRollTonyReacts Absolutely. That's why your take is so interesting. You're viewing it in a way without context and the fact you went going through sensory overload as a musician/composer (even if it's catchy) the same way she is with trying to understand herself makes this whole watch a lot of fun. I dunno if that's genius or what. If you ever wanted to watch a short version of all that, there was a theatrical movie release in '95 that covers the whole vibe very well. (Also one of the craziest opening pieces of music I've ever heard.) Thanks again man.

 @DrumRollTony Reacts Brother - I feel that on an emotional level lol. Media backlog is my own personal dissonance. Who do we gotta talk with to get 2 more hours in the day? If you ever are curious in your downtime: There is a short musical theory breakdown (~13 min) of basically this series' most iconic song ("Making of a Cyborg") and goes into some musical theory and history that I think you would enjoy. It combines Belgian and Japanese folk choir and is just interesting even if its not got a lot of parts. I'm not a musician by any means, but I do understand the value of strong use of metaphors/symbolism when combining various mediums of art and this song has that. I can only imagine your take away as somone who views/understands music on a greater level. I'll share it if you ever get curious: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZxyeraIkrPWf58.html I feel like the musical theory discussed is beyond my comprehension of musical composition, but as a listener, I can't help but feel its incredibly unique. It structure probably by no means complex all, but just like.... the compound sound is special. If nothing else- its one of the few pieces of music I feel most people could hear 3 seconds of on "Name That Tune" and immediately know what it is if they have heard it before. Thanks again.

the famous line from Batman Begins, explains it well: "It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me" when you literally can be anything... one day, you're an adult male human, another day, you're an adult female human, another day, you're a male human child, another day, you're a female human child, another day, you're a male dog, another day, you're a female dog, another day, you're a car, another day, you're a plane, another day, you're a toaster oven, etc etc etc, in a cyberized world, when you can be uploaded/downloaded into anything... are we able to retain a sense of "self/me or identity"... well, the way that section 9 (and especially Mokoto Kusanagi) in the anime deals with it, is with being workaholics, ~ "when one is unsure of their role in life and society and as a person or individual, drown yourself in work or whatever task, and you'll be instantly cured of this unsure'ity", distracting/diverting yourself from having the time or energy from such thoughts/analysis about your state of existence and as a person or individual, within life and society using "work", is actually quite ironic, being "robotic", is humanity's salvation to having meaning/purpose in one's life, existence, and society... yet, it's true, very ironic... or maybe that's not the right word for it, hmm this second opening's lyrics and tone/singing/music, and the visuals too, really gets into that, "never give up, never quit, keep getting back up and back to work, relentless dedication/drive"

"It's a bit more catchy but much less interesting" I couldn't disagree more. I've never cared for "Inner Universe". And something being "poppy" (which I don't even really agree with in regards to "Rise") is not an automatic designation of quality like you are suggesting. "Rise" is a fantastic song and easily one of my favorites from the GITS Stand Alone Complex soundtrack.

@@DaRunningMan I didn’t say it was bad. My remark was just based off of Tony’s thumbnail and how he’s going to perceive the song as a musician. I actually prefer Rise as an intro song. I happen to prefer catchy and poppy songs. I think Inner Universe is missing a strong hook, and Rise is a better song to get hyped for the show. However, going back and listening to Inner Universe, I appreciate it in different ways. It’s unorthodox, and Origa’s vocals are more haunting and emotive.

Like some anime, SAC (or Stand Alone Complex for short) have an excelent soundtrack Maybe this can surprise you, but the lyrics aren´t a mix of japanese and english, but a mix of russian and english. The singer of this song, composed by Yoko Kanno (a pretty famous composer in the industry) is Origa en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origa Sadly, she died some years ago in Tokyo (she had both russian and japanese nationality) Music from "Ghost in the Shell" sometimes are really great, the original composer for the original movie was Kenji Kawai, another great japanese composer. Another fact to be aware in anime openings, it´s that they must have a short version of about 45 seconds, you can´t put a long song in a anime opening or ending. Time is money

I appreciate your thoughts on this and giving a different perspective. I really enjoy this song but considering the nostalgia factor I can't deny that it takes my mind on a journey hearing these sounds and seeing the imagery from the opening. Also I don't know how much you're aware of Ghost in the Shell, but the original movie is a highly influential piece of animation and is honestly a must watch. I'm sure you're aware of the Matrix, and GitS was such a big influence/inspiration that Wachowski's asked the GitS creator permission first, or so the story goes. Although I would really more consider it like the Blade Runner of anime. Not even saying you need to do a reaction, but if any of this sounds appealing to you the original GitS movie is a fantastic watch if you enjoy that kind of hyper realistic cyber punk theme.

I think the best description I've heard this style of music or song is "an intolerable wall of noise" - I first heard it used for a nin song, I can't quite remember which one it was. But I think some people find it to be a bit too much (sensory overload), I'd also argue not to listen to an uploaded YT verison of it... you need the flac version- it sounds 5 times cleaner. Even on this vid, it sounds very boomy.. the spotify version doesn't sound quite like this.
@khaoscualdawath
@khaoscualdawath Жыл бұрын
The thing about the density and noise of the song, I believe it is quite a good match to the series, or rather the whole GitS universe. All the films have a very strong parallel between its main themes, which can feel like all vieing to be the main point of the show. The action elements which are in your face, unapologetic, and industrial feeling as most bodies exploding are androidized parts - the thriller elements of the doom and gloom plot, which intermingles criminal and political themes in a very dystopian future - and the philosophical message/conversation, which is not hiding under the hood as nearly all other stories deliver them. The main characters are digesting what they are doing, while getting to nearly academic level conversations about how the world works, and what may motivate their targets... All three themes are in our face constantly, and it is something each viewer has to decide if they have a preference, or if they can pick up on all of them at once. Most people seriously into anime culture had several runs of the show, as the packed themes and messages are making it rewatchable.

Yoko Kono is just an exquisite composer,..the jazz she incorporates into her works, it might be why you see it as all over the place, jazz can be messy, but it makes for sense 😉, and I'm too overjoyed that she worked with Origa, it's kismet,..I swear,..like so many collaborations, Simon and Garfunkel, the music that springs from collaborations like that, you just can't imagine it any other way,..my only regret for Kono, is that she never got the chance to work with Burt Bacharach,..I would have loved to have seen that, no telling what masterpiece they would've come up with,..keep going do check out I Can't Be Cool, Cyberbird, Inner Universe, and also Call Me, by Steve Conte, Living Inside The Shell, Rain,...enjoy Godspeed, Peace ✌

I'm making this comment before the actual premiere of the video. All I can see is the thumbnail that says "THIS WAS JUST OK". So I don't know what the specific comments are as of me writing this. But I will say is that out of the first two OPs of GITS Stand Alone Complex, "Rise" the 2nd season's OP was one of my favorites of the whole soundtrack. I much more preferred this opening song over the 1st season's which was "Inner Universe". I never cared for "Inner Universe". I find it doesn't go anywhere interesting and I think pretty stagnant whereas "Rise" was much more memorable with a very effective chorus. It's like an Electronica call to arms. When I was watching the show for the first time, I had a whole sound system so the surround sound during "Rise" came in nicely every time it played and really made it come across as epic. Really cool track. The first OP "Inner Universe" always sounded to me much better as some Ambient music not the opening of a show. Both "Rise" and "Inner Universe" do feature the same singer, Origa, who was a Russian singer. She sadly passed away in 2015. Even though I didn't care for "Inner Universe:" from the first season, I really dug the ending theme to the 1st season though: "Lithium Flower". That's also one of my favorites from the Stand Alone Complext soundtrack! What's interesting is that for both seasons of Stand Alone Complex, the openings and endings of each season were different when they were aired on Japanese TV. On Japanese TV they used other songs from the Stand Alone Complex soundtrack and had completely different animation montages. The alternative opening of the 1st season was "Get9" instead of "Inner Universe". Get9 is like Funk/Rock/Hip Hop track and much more lively. Instead of "Rise", season 2's alternative opening was "Christmas in the Silent Forest" which is like an eerie experimental Electronica song mixed with some Orchestral elements which may not sound like something used for an opening but it actually works for the animation that they did for that alternative opening. I still prefer "Rise" though. Maybe "Rise" might work for you better in context with the opening animation that goes along with it.

It's interesting to me they you would make that large of a comment without seeing the video first. I didn't hate the music but I'm not approaching anything on the channel in a mental assessment space of it needing to be connected to other media to be justified. I'm just listening to the music itself. I found the construction of it average and the chord voicing excessively loud. That's all separate from what it's mixed in with of course, likely connected to its anime content for importance. HOWEVER that's sort of like ordering food with meh ingredients but relying on that the location or memory associated with eating it to make it a better perceived experience. That doesn't change the ingredients. I'm sure if I watched this anime and heard it often it would carry weight from story association.

@ReiShs
@ReiShs Жыл бұрын
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Ofc, compared to say Bach or Led Zeppelin it would be modern but it does have those end of 90s/2000s vibes, at least for me. I am not saying that complex design didn't exist back then but I feel like artists attempt to be more creative today with composition and arrangements (or have more variety) - maybe has something to do how short lived music is nowadays thanks to internet and how hard it can be to stand out in the mass of information. Maybe also technological progress is to blame - we have more tools than ever today. It is really noticeable for artists and bands that created music say 20 years ago and still do now. Their pieces from 20 years ago have similar trends as most music from that time. Please, don't get me wrong - I don't think you are wrong, just pointing out this kind of music and methods were very, very typical for that time.
@DrumRollTonyReacts
@DrumRollTonyReacts Жыл бұрын
@@ReiShs I cant be wrong because it's an informed opinion I am sharing. LOL I am getting a kick out of you jumping from Bach (you didnt specify which one btw) and then ALL THE WAY to Led Zeppelin. LOL epic scope of unrelated music. I think you should know that I am NOT in the mindstate of newer music being better because of a vast amount of digital tools at hand. I am actually the opposite. The chord progressions you heard overused 20 years ago are still alive and overused ago right now. Nothing has changed as far as that is concerned. Good music 20 years ago is still good music today. Good music right now is still good music compared to contemporary bad music. With that being said, great musicians of today with all those tools do create great music and still could without said modern tools. Shitty musicians with all those tools today still create subpar music. Everyone has a pallet on what is "good" to them. My pallet is just saturated a lot different than most folks. But mannnnn, you think that something as simple as a half time groove breakdown in this piece is somehow unique to 2006? ❌ No way! The other part I talked about in this video not being that well designed (IMO) was the note sonority stacking and extreme dynamics. That has nothing to do with the late 2000s music or music being "typical for that time". That is just chord design and basic fundamentals, musianship. There are 12 notes. That's it.

@@DrumRollTonyReacts I guess I couldn't bring my point over. As someone who watched anime for over 30 years I am just glad we get more musical variety and overall better sound quality in anime nowadays then say 20 or even 10 years ago, IMO (before horde of anime fans attack me, there are ALWAYS exceptions). Pieces like "Kick Back" - which you seemed to enjoy - probably wouldn't be picked back or arranged the same way. Who knows, maybe Kenshi Yonezu wouldn't even write music today if not for vocaloid and possibilities it offered. I am sure Yoko Kanno wouldn't make "Rise" the same way today as well. P.S. I feel like Yoko Kanno was told "more of the same" when they greenlit the second season, and she did what she could with that. It's not an exceptional piece largely because it feels derivative of the narrative in the second season. It's a "more of the same" story that wants to follow what came before, but what came before was already such a strong story that adding onto it has the issue of just telling a lesser narrative.
