Who is gonna be the one! It was the first Jinjer performance I saw on screen and I was flabbergasted, almost fell out of my chair. Not only the vocals but the whole band is absurd and very thight in this live video. They do things with ritme, layering, sound and composition no other band does. Never saw a drummer with such a low build kit.... and he is so damn good at it. All four members are top level and that makes it extra, extra interesting to watch and listen to them. This awesome four piece unit comes from all places:....Ukraine! How can that be? I'am not a metalhead but world class I say.

Gotta second this. The bass playing especially blew my mind. I also love how much more forward in the mix their bass is (in general, but also on that performance). I have a hard time hearing bass guitars in metal usually because my ears tend to the harmonics around fundamentals (overtones and undertones). It's often too much of a wall of sound.

You will be even more surprised if I tell you that the band comes from the Russian part of Ukraine, just 24 miles from the long-suffering Donetsk. They know Ukrainian, but in normal life they speak Russian. It goes like this.

1:18 - *Max: _"Hey Eugene, there's too much fret buzz in the intro, maybe you should record that part again."_ Eugene: _"Nah, let's leave it like that."_ *- Max Morton, the guy who owns the studio where they recorded every album after Cloud Factory. How many bands in this world of metronomic, grid aligned, noise-free, sanitised Metal would risk leaving such an imperfection in a song? I bet none but Jinjer did and dang, doesn't it sound good? :D 5:25 - I loved the snare sound right from the start but you know, Vlad got a LOT of hate because of it when the songs from this EP (Micro) started to be released. Ape was the first and I remember engaging in "heated" discussions about the snare sound with some hardcore Metal fans because they were calling it "weak" and "unfitting for Metal". Some of them were even bitching about how much better the drums sounded in their previous album (King of Everything), that's why I quickly realised that there's no point arguing with people who clearly hate anything that doesn't sound like the same snare sample that EVERYONE uses nowadays. No worries, they may have lost a few Metal elitist fans with the Micro EP and the Macro album but they sure gained a lot of new fans who can recognise good music when they hear it. The next time you listen to this song, please pay attention to the drum pattern in the chorus. Just do it. ; ) Like 289!

It was "Pisces" for me. Never much into metal and certainly no growling or screaming vocals. Tatiana was the first harsh vocalist that I could understand some of the growling lyrics. That intrigued me and now I can't get enough. I'm 61 years old and disabled but I drove 200 miles to see them live last year. It was difficult for me but damn was it worth it. I have been to many, many rock shows in the past and seen acts such as Clapton, AC/DC, Heart and Sabbath. Jinjer's show was top 3 in my life. The only act left that I care enough to see live at this point in my life is Band-Maid. Here's hoping, in the meantime Tony you keep rolling and I'll keep watching ! Oh yeah you will like "Dissension" by Nemophila as well. "

Hi Tony. I've been looking forward to watching your reaction to this one because of Vlad's off timing feel in the verse. I'm not playing these days but being an old drummer (63) I really enjoy Vlad's playing. Even though you said a bar of 4 and a bar of 2 it is the combination mixed meter and off beat snare strikes that throw me off. You mentioned the little cymbal crown ping but there are so many other cool parts he plays like during that "Dear Lord" part and between those cool rhythms you were pointing out there are like china crashes being played over the top of in some syncopated thirds type feel against everything else. A bit later it's syncopated thirds in half time or just hitting the 1 of 3??? Anyway It is remarkable how he pulls these beats off.

Superb commentary. I think it's time for you to listen to Homeback by Jinjer. A read of the lyrics beforehand and knowing Tatiana is from the war torn region in the East of Ukraine will make it hit even harder. The musicality of this band is off the scale and this composition is no exception.

This is exactly what I meant that this band is a cohesive unit when I saw your first Jinjer reaction Tony. It’s not just metal to sound metal

Such a great song. Those angular, proggy, brain-engaging, timings with crisp syncopated Vlad-ness (I love that he still makes you wonder for the first couple bars of the chorus whether it really has gone to a simple 4/4 LOL).... & when Tatiana comes back in after the chill clean-chords-with-plenty-delay-from-Roman section with that super tender vocal, while Eugene is laying down one of his more impressive both-hands-busy-but-always-super-tasteful passages.... what's not to love?! :) "Who Is Gonna Be The One" live was my first taste of Jinjer.... & I still love that arrangement (it was written & recorded originally in the old 2-guitarist line-up, but the popular live vid is an arrangement with Eugene filling out the sound in that way he does, & new-boi {at the time} Vlad playing drums the way he does). That was the start of what Jinjer are these days, & imho it still stands up really well. :)

So many cool and unexpected things in this song. One thing I really had to listen to a bunch of times is the chord progression they start in the "quiet section". First they go for 4 bars, but then they change to 5 bars, and Tatiana comes in with the vocals and the 5-bar series continues. Very odd, unsettling, pleasant and fresh at the same time. And of course, the chorus is super catchy and well produced, chef's kiss.

First song I heard was Pisces. First time live on Wacken 2019 (the show where the famously reacted to perennial video was recorded). Also they were the first band I saw after the start of Corona, at an incredible gig in colonge towards the end of last year ♥ Tony I love your verbal representations of drum-patterns and rhythms, they are both accurate and very easy to understand. Makes me think you must be a great rhythmic instructor :D

i've probably listened to this one too many times so i wore it out, but i think this might be the best metal song of the past decade...except for a solo (which is not necessary to me) it has everything... lots of difficult and constantly changing rhythms and meters, excellent riffs, bass, drums on par with guitar, the "ballady" parts u referenced are i think more aptly called EPIC, beautiful chords on the slow part, clean vocals, etc.... it's a total package and exactly as heavy as i like

Their newest stuff is a pretty experimental 3 track EP, but I think their singles are all solid and then they have a SXM Liquid Metal live performance that's mostly stuff from their pre-album EPs. Holy Roller and Constance are my favorites, and they could not be any more different from each other.
