Having a young real band is spending money. Not earning them. Even if you all live in the same town you have to spend, spend and spend. And then when you sacrificed everything and finally you're ready to show yourself to the world, the first gig manager tells you you have to pay him like 500 euros to get a slot and another 200 euros if you'd like to sell your merch no one will buy. My life is music and I love playing live but fuck it. You just end up feeling completely ruined both physically and emotionally. Let alone financially. A studio project with cool videos and maybe a gig or two every 10 years is ok.

I have made a few band attempts myself, which chewed me up and spit me out. I got tired of going broke and just decided to hang up that pursuit. I'm totally on board with your last sentence. I can write, record, document, and release as much music/content as I feel like, and I love it!

Boris, I've been through all this sort of nonsense with the music business and other musicians. It's one of those things that chips away at you, and if you're not careful can come and get you. If you are fortunate enough to have family and good friends around you, sink back into that for a while and ground yourself again. Pay no attention to these plastic gangsters, they have to use these sorts of threats to confirm to themselves that they have some sort of relevance in the grand scheme of life when, in reality, they're just a middle-man living off the talent of people like you and me.

NPD Boris. Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Sounds like that is what you bumped up against, I imagine there is a lot of that shit in the industry and the " way things are" Whenever you are hit with the " HOW DARE YOU?" It becomes an almost comical litmus test of the nature of the personality you are dealing with. I have unfortunately dealt with a couple of these vampires of energy. Keep rockin man. I and many others love the music you are creating.

Boris, your star is on the rise and this is part of the ascent. The very finest musicians in the world have things like this happen from time to time. It's almost a problem that you want to have if that makes any sense. Continue to seek excellence, especially in making connections, and you'll have great success. As you grow, your success will naturally send a message that you don't have time for nonsense and others at the top of their fields will be drawn to you.

Maintaining your integrity and staying true to yourself is what you're doing, which is a very very important thing. I fully believe in being properly compensated for your work / talents (of performance) and getting paid well for it.. I do not believe (most) musicians get paid enough.. Seriously. Sadly, it is a very common thing, in the entertainment industry, to pay your own travel expenses.. It sucks, but technically, you're a sub contractor, so you're subject to very different labor laws and things along those lines. I remember reading many interviews with professional wrestlers, when they were coming up, talking about paying their own travel expenses out if their meger paychecks; which is why they never actually made any money. The entire entertainment industry as a whole is greedy and greesy. Stay independent. Cheers 🍻😎🤘

Holy shit! What I absolutely can't understand here is that they offer you such contracts and then get offended when you say you can't play the show for cost reasons. I used to organize underground metal concerts myself more than 20 years ago. It was ALWAYS part of the contract that the musicians who had to travel a long way were paid their travel expenses and accommodation in addition to their fee. Back then, it would never have occurred to me to offer a contract where the band's costs were not covered. And yes, there were overnight stays in youth hostels, or privately at my house, but fuck! even if a band only got food and beer as a fee, the costs were always covered. I'm shocked at how bands like Tryglav are treated!

I can’t speak to Europe because I never worked over there, but I worked in the music industry for several years here in the US on tour with lots of big name acts, and I was so jaded by the time I got out that it was years before I even went to another live show as just a fan. Promoters and label management are the world’s worst. For that dude to basically threaten you with slander is some of the most unprofessional shit I’ve ever heard. It’s not like you’ve been in preproduction with him for months sorting out parking for your 3 busses and two truckloads of equipment, your power requirements to run your monstrous stage show, and the army of stage hands you’re gonna need to load in and out. You’re literally one of the openers who was actually professional enough to give him a huge advanced heads up. Of all the problems I’ve ever had with live shows, other than weather related, almost every single one was because of the promoter. My guess is he’s seen how many subscribers you have and thinks that means you’ll be bringing that many people to the show. Fuck that guy

Dude theres always been the saying “theres no music in the music industry”. Most of these suits are parasitic leaches and parasites. i was in a signed touring band for half a decade and near the end we were getting terrible tours and offers only to find out after the fact that our booking agent got blacklisted after making some personal enemies in the industry. Had literally zero to do with us yet we paid the price. Needless to say I refuse to ever do music like that again unless its on my terms. Keep it up Boris, you’re a hardworking, creative dude. You dont need them.

That's why the 'Fenris' formula will always work best - have a full time job, do your projects studio only without being dependent on anything or anybody and release your stuff only on labels which are willing to consider YOUR terms instead of forcing you to accept THEIR conditions. And if the last one is hard to achieve, then record and release everything by yourself. Happily, we live in the world of streaming platforms and if you want physical releases, you can always save some money to print a few copies. I don't know why live shows should be an important aspect of black metal.

I talked with the frontman on Wind Rose this summer at a tiny festival here in Italy, that despite being small actually PAID the bands, (and i got to see Wind Rose, Ulvedhaar and Tyr in the same day, for free, and therefore had spare money to buy merch, because the town paid for them, no ticket, free entry): "I won't come to play at a festival for a beer and free food, i can get those at home"

Hey, Boris: I'm in a band that plays not the music I love, but the only compromise I could get to play with friends on a regular basis. Recently we started getting some gigs and started charging more than just "ah, give us some pints and it's done". What we learned is that the Music business, specially playing live is very close to prostitution: do whatever the audience wants, get paid whatever they want to pay you and DON'T complain, otherwise social media cancellation. Funny you should share this experience, cus' I got the same sh*t in a different style. One I don't even hold that close to my heart as metal (old pop/classic rock from the 70 - 90's)

Felt quite sorry for hearing those really, and a quite shocked in a way. Is it even legal to ask someone to do some work for your business without paying? (asing bands to play at your fest) I am from Hong Kong, basically a place where non-pop(not just metal) music is really not popular (For reference, A Mayhem show would be less than 200 people, a Cryptopsy show would be just merely 150 people, a Marduk show would be similar. And the whole population in this city is about 7 Millions). But why is it we still got Mayhem or Cryptopsy or something else play here( all happened in a single year)? It's because our local promotor literally sold his own fking apartment and moved his family to another South Eastern country where the expenses is much more affordable, and so that he has the money and he can keep working remotely to bring some bands for us the local minority. What he did may be a bit not so wise in a sense, but I am wholeheartedly grateful for his act. And thus I got the impression of music promotors are people very passionate about their works and music. But we can see now it clearly it is not everyone. Nonetheless I still hope someday, somewhere in someway I can see Tryglav (or even better can say Hi to you) . I am considering to go to Midgardsblot for the first time in 2024 (actually considering this vs Brutal Assault, Emperor in both), maybe there is a chance for real I can meet you... Let's see and looking forward

And the first guy sounds like he's 12. And your entitled "friend" can get lost. I'm sorry you had all this stuff happening to you all at once. People seriously suck. Frankly, this adventure you told us sounds like when you submit to BS jobs, and when you refuse them they are pissed off: they understand they'll not make money out of you. That's why I could do tours with my bands, but I won't. Conditions are bullshit. But probably a 1% of fault goes to you too: I could be wrong, but if I led a one man band, I would make a strong budget first, and then ask for gigs, knowing that I could go home with some money lost. What you did sounds TO THEM like first you got the gigs and then you asked yourself if you could afford it.

Hey, fellow musician here. Class act on your part to not call these promoters out! Logistics are a huge problem for many bands, you may want to start investing on that. A van with your gear, plus each member owning their means of trasportation, or even better a camping van, would allow you to attend gigs quite far from your base. If you're willing to sleep in your cars or utilise camping sites, with careful planning you could cover a great radius, although not in great comfort!

There are many pros & cons being an one man band, one of the cons, and the biggest , is the live shows, either you find members who ideally live close to you and can understand your vision and support it or you have to pay professionals. There also other ways to go live but it's not easy or acceptable by some fans. Just accept the facts and keep on creating music and things will find their own way

That is a really shitty way for them to act and it just makes you look better by their poor behavior. You will come out of this stronger, and there will be a day you will have a laugh about this case. IMO it is better to stay faaaar away from persons who approach you as if you are a filler for a gig regardless the arena. It is a filtering process imo on the way of ascend as an art act. Stay true to yourself, you will always be fine. On a serious note, how do you manage to stay warm in one t shirt in a Norwegian apartment during winter??? Sorry if my humour is tasteless, keep it up and rock on, Boris!!🖤

Maybe I am too naiv, but I hope that kind of people like them, they are just very little precent of the metal music industry.

Well it sounds like you dodged a bullet there, to be honest! You certainly don't need to worry about your albums not being even reasonably successful, and nowadays anyway, >75% (generous) of bands and artists that claim to tour around every single year and prefer large venues solely out of passion for the art are full of themselves and/or are being bullied by their managers. Local clubs might be a bit boring, but there would be no concerns about storms, heavy rain, dodgy bus detours (Dueling Banjos starts playing), being stranded etc when you could be supported by not only the fans, but others around who want to see local bands thrive, and it could grow from there.

It would be supercool if passion negated economic reality.

'The truth [sic] musicians play primarly out by passion'? Someone wants to exploit you! Run away from he or she! Personaly, I think you're right!

Maybe this is why Darkthrone said to hell with touring? Hats off to the bands that play for a cup of a coffee, but a guys gotta eat and have a roof over his head too. This is just petty bullshit man. Look how far you've come in just a few short years. Imagine where you'll be in 10. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to find band members in Norway. That's like the Black Metal mecca of the world. You need to venture out in to forests more often. Shake a tree hard enough and a bassist should fall out. Best of luck Boris \m/
