I'm the percussionist in gaudy hawaiian shirt! This was the highlight of my time at UNT. I became a huge fan of Zappa after stumbling on a clip of Ruth Underwood playing Rollo Interior on tv when i was 12 so I was thrilled to have the opurtunity to play in this group. I thoroughly enjoy reading the (mostly) positive comments on here so thank you all! What some might not realize is we only had 2 rehearsals as a full band before this show

This is where it all begins. Teachers, students, great compositions, and supporting artists; all striving to learn, understand, perform, and enjoy great music. Unless you're born a genius, which is so extremely rare, this is how it's done. And, they chose one of the most challenging of composers to grind, hone, and polish their craft. Every one of those young men and women deserve a great token of appreciation from all of us who love great music. Parents, teachers, and Frank himself can not be proud enough. The only thing that was missing, was a forceful conductor to inject that depth that Frank was so well known for........... I hope the year since this was done, found you all happily continuing in a great tradition of unparalleled passion and enjoyment of this profound art form....... Never be afraid to do Broadway the Hard Way.......

I wept and blew my nose throughout this amazing performance. I saw Zappa in 1974 when I was 17 years old at a medium small round theater in Phoenix. I got tickets 2 hours after they went on sale and got 2nd row. I sat in awe, but now at 67 I just cried as the melodies and amazing riffs flew through my soul. Thank you to all of these fine young performers!!!

Great choice of songs! Great arrangements! I would honestly show this video to someone to give them the idea of what Zappa was about musically, rather than some of his own original performances. You've made Zappa more accessible and palatable with this show. Most people need to be introduced gradually, and this is an amazingly good stepping stone. Also hats off to the sound engineers. I hope you all managed to stay in music in some capacity. Best of luck.

I had this playing in background while working at my desk, had to see who it was, stayed for the duration of the best UNT performance I've ever seen. Fine piano [David Falterman] in Little House. The trumpet [Kole Pantuso] in Village of the Sun, that white guitar flies in Montana, and the girls got the fast parts down pat. And Anna Jalkeus, unbelievably, got the high note at the end. Did I mention the sax solo at 57:36? Much of this performance, particularly the instrumentals, is undistinguishable from Zappa's own. Mega kudos to the audio engineers [Derek Miller and Ermir Bejo] Whenever it pops up on my feed, I consume it once again.

As a huge Zappa fan, I sometimes listen to bands covering his material. Much respect to all of them. But this ranks as one of the very top performances I have seen. Outstanding: 1)I am sure Mr. Barrow brings some magic, 2)for sure the musicianship, but also, how natural it comes from each individual and as an ensemble (many other performances sound stiff) and 3)the energy -a factor that was important to Zappa and that sometimes gets lost when playing the notes: here the energy/tension is incredible. I spent one evening listening to this performance and I truly enjoyed it end-to-end. Bravo to everyone!
