Music On The Edge Of Silence - Adrian Freedman
Music for solo shakuhachi.
Seven meditative pieces for Japanese bamboo flute.
Three classical Japanese Honkyoku pieces from the Zen tradition, three original compositions by Adrian Freedman, and one piece by the Japanese composer Fukuda Rando.
The shakuhachi is an instrument that really comes into its own when played as a solo instrument.
It has its own repertoire of solo pieces, the Honkyoku, that originated within an ancient Zen tradition of playing the shakuhachi and meditating.
Adrian spent seven years in Japan immersed in learning these pieces, as well as composing new pieces for shakuhachi.
The album Music on the Edge of Silence reflects something of this journey, from ancient roots to new flowerings.
