The song is performed accompanied by two musicians playing traditional instruments. The song tells the story of a young Kazakh man who has been drafted into the Russian army to fight for Russia during WW1 and is force marched from his home. He sings of his love and longing for his country and his fear that he will never see it again. Kazakhstan only achieved independence from Russia in 1991 and suffered greatly under Czarist and Communist rule. Dimash was born in 1994, only 3 years after Kazakhstan became independent, so the suffering of his parents and especially his grandparents, who live with Dimash and his parents, is still current in memories.
