Lady Maria's Theme is one of my all time favourites. I think it has the most harmonic changes out of all the Bloodborne tracks and the instrumentation is equally frantic. I still think it's Yuka Kitamura's best work and I always love watching people's first impressions of it!

So cool to see all these composers on KZfaq enjoying the FromSoft OSTs as much as I have! If you've any interest, I have a relatively forgotten OST to recommend: Medal of Honor Frontline. Composer was Michael Giacchino who did the score for UP and Ratatouille, among others! Really bombastic and energizing but also haunting, depending on the level. Specific recommendations would either be "After the Drop" or "Manor House Rally." Please keep uploading!

Bloodborne is my favorite of all of the From Software games I’ve played, and Lady Maria wins best boss for me. After playing through the game at least 30 times solo, and running several friends through it, I can’t get enough. It’s such a beautiful fight in every way. It’s faster paced (as all of the Hunter fights tend to be) the spectacle of the whole thing with the lore, and her turning away from the use of blood weapons, only to resort to it out of desperation in this fight. Trying so very hard to keep the Fishing Hamlet safe from further ravaging that took the life of Kos. When you add all of that to the swelling score, it’s just one of the best boss fights of all time for me. so beautiful. I still occasionally listen to this song just driving around.

All the From Soft games have absolutely stellar soundtracks. I definitely recommend you listen to "Great Grey Wolf Sif" and "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder" From Dark Souls 1. (Also you should take a listen to "Ludwig, the Holy Blade (Doom Version)" by GeoffPlaysGuitar)

I think the best rhing about this theme is when you play the game. Because the music changes with each of her phases. And it ramps up as she does wirh more ferocious and daunting attacks with heavy emotions becuase maria is forsaking herself and her wishes in this battle all to stop you. And to hide the shameful and horrific acts she and her companions commited.

Oh yeah, you can get her Rakuyo. The question is how much hell are you willing to put yourself through to get it. It's in a well in the Fishing Hamlet, and you have to kill two of those big ass shark monsters.

I think Elden Ring and Bloodborne have the best tracks and I think that for two main reasons: 1) They use a live orchestra, as opposed to the others where there's a lot of MIDI stuff going on, and 2) There's a variety of composers working on them. Both games had several people working on the OST and each one has a few fantastic compositions. I get a tiny bit bored when it's just Motoi Sakuraba (who did all of DS1 and a chunk of DS2) or Yuka Kitamura (who did some of DS2, all of DS3 and all of Sekiro) all the time. This variation leads to the best music, in my opinion.

In fact, only Bloodborne had a live orchestra. In all others it is not. Besides, I think the DS3 music is better than the ER (Personally my preference). Yuka Kitamura didn't write the entire DS3 soundtrack. There were also other composers, such as Tsukaso Saito, Matoi Sakuraba and others.

@@LuM4rex No, ER definitely had an orchestra working on their music, you can even find videos online of it. I think Kitamura is a little overrated, so DS3 can never be my favourite even though I like a handful of the tracks. You're right that she didn't do all of DS3, but she did around 75-80% of it. Like I said, I also don't care for Sakuraba that much.

@@Al-ji4gd What does overestimate mean? Who does this? Fans of a certain game? I can assure you that any game, movie or music can be called overrated. I don't quite understand why people use this term. Probably to give your personal opinion more weight. Any work of art is compared based on personal preferences. What one person may consider brilliant, for another will seem like sheer nonsense. I said that I like soundtracks with a common style, it distinguishes them from the rest and makes them more "memorable". That's why Kitamura colossal work in DS3 and Sekiro sets their soundtracks apart for me, more than ER, which has employed many other composers with different styles of music writing. Even in Bloodborne, the music felt more unified with the game, while Elden Ring feels like a collection of game hits From Software.

@@LuM4rex Overrated, yes. I'm claiming it's not as good as people say it is. Yes, to give my own personal opinion more weight. How else would I do it? And why is that controversial? I don't see the argument here. You like a common style, fine, I happen to not like that particular style that much, especially when it's used over and over again and there's only one composer involved in a piece of work. I find a lot of Kitamura's music repetitive and meandering. And I prefer ER and BB, which have a lot of variety in terms of compositions, as well as a live orchestra.

I consider myself a bit of a music nerd, and I even once dreamed of getting into production when i was younger. I've listened to all kinds of music genres over the years and so many notable songs and works of music in games and tv and other media. I am of the belief that this song - this particular track from this wonderful, perfect game - is the greatest piece of music I have ever heard. Bold statement? Sure, but i will argue this to my dying day. If I ever hear this song performed live, I guarantee i will melt into the floor in a puddle of tears as i lose control of my emotional well-being.

Fun story: When I watched a number of streamers play this for the first time, they would struggle to reach Phase 2 of the fight, where the choir kicks in. Once they did, many of them struggled to last very long into the new phase. Because of this, I began referring to the moment as the "Death Choir" and it stuck within several Twitch communities. :)

I believe most Dark Souls and Bloodborne tracks are composed using counterpoint to simulate old style music with modern orchestra.

Counterpoint theory is very interwoven into Western music theory esp when emulating classical music for sure! Sometimes the techniques stick out more than others and it's cool when it really does pop out!

I don’t know if you’ve already listened to it, but Malenia’s theme from ER is my personal favourite, and one of Kitamura’s best imo. Along with Champion’s Gravetender and Slave Knight Gael (which sound like they have similar elements too).

Restarting this track part way through is actually the correct way to listen, but strictly speaking you ought also to utter the words "OMG she so scary..." or just a long string of expletives between each play.
