Fun fact about that chanting, if you listen closely, the chanting starts OUT going "KAR EN TUK". However, in the last 3 verses, the words start getting swapped out for their English equivalents, going from "KAR EN TEAR" to "RIP EN TEAR" to finally "RIP AND TEAR" by the final verse.

The way these songs are composed, they're done in bits and pieces. When you're in-game, it will play a random segment of it based on what's going on. Normally, it's, of course, just playing "ambient" music until a fight starts, that's when it really kicks in. The fights are also kinda done in phases, depending on the area. Most big arenas = big battles, which means three phases. Typically, you get the weaker enemies and the build-up sections of the song, and by the time you get the 3rd phase the big drop hits & the biggest demons come out to kick your ass. For some other big battles, they'll start *right* at the drop kinda like how this song does. This song was produced by Mick himself. But, as others said, a lot weren't. So, with songs like Super Gore Nest, what you get is the game studio kinda frankenstein-ing the in-game audio files together. And for SGN in particular, it's a little shoddy & kinda repetitive. Some of the transitions are a little scuffed and don't quite meld together as well. Now, on the other hand, you have the fan mixes. Which is the same thing, most are kinda scuffed, but some are great. As someone already mentioned, Koma was probably the best at this. To the point where Mick would sometimes comment on his videos lol. Koma did eventually delete his channel, but most re-uploads still exist. *tldr; I recommend the Koma version of Super Gore Nest over the OST version.* (Cultist Base is fine, though. Mick mixed it.) Edit: here's the link btw, if you need it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rMyfnZqlnLS-m30.html

8:06 that "glass breaking in reverse" theory is quite interesting actually. The chant that follows that sound effect represents the main character's past fighting as a gladiator in crowded arenas. So the glass breaking in reverse sfx might represent a rewind to the that past memory or something? Maybe Mick was up to something there 😄

Not sure anyone has mentioned this but the reason the Doom music has so many ups and downs and transitions is because it is designed to be stripped down and escalate depending on the gameplay. When not fighting you don't want those really energetic parts and when you are in the middle of the chaos you don't want the lulls. What's most impressive about that is, for the most part, the player decides when there is action, not the game.

There was a track that Mick Gordon did for Doom (I don't remember if it was 2016 or Eternal) where for vocals, he hired like 20 metalhead singers to scream into their microphones to sound like the screams and wails of the damned in hell for a track. This is gonna sound like heresy, but the *BEST* DOOM track ever written was actually a (professional) fanmade total rewrite of DOOM Eternal's DLC final boss, Fall of Davoth by Geoffrey Day. Basically he tried to interpret how Mick Gordon would've written the final boss track if he hadn't been screwed over by Bethesda, following the ethos with which he wrote both games' soundtracks that sadly the replacement artist didn't... Because it's not 'official', nobody ever reacts to it (I've only ever seen one, by Windmill Full ov Corpses) and it deserves SO much more goddamn attention than it gets. I'd love to see you react to it. He worked with Mick on Atomic Heart most recently, and before that his claim to fame was/is doing Argent Metal (ie DOOM style) covers of various video game tracks, including a lot of SoulsBorne music. Even if it's not for content you should check him out, but god please, react to Fall of Davoth..!

@RichoRosai
@RichoRosai 6 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly from the GDC talk it was the actual chainsaw sound from one of the games that helped him establish that unique sound to convince them to allow guitars, and it or a similar sound got mixed into a lot of the guitar processing. Could be like through a vocoder to add lots of texture but keep it tonally neutral.

Somehow, I completely forgot or never realized there was chanting in "Meathook", it seems like they're saying "Rip and tear", one of the major taglines of Doom Eternal and the Doom comics. As for other game OST tracks to take a listen to (besides the other ones I'd mentioned in a previous video), "Sugaan Essena" by The HU is worth a listen. EA Star Wars had The HU (Mongolian throat-singing metal band) make a track for Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, and "Sugaan Essena" is what they made. EA SW and The HU worked together to make the lyrics unique to Star Wars, but there's also a version called "Black Thunder", which has both Mongolian and English vocals featuring DL of Bad Wolves and Serj Tankian from System of A Down. Quake and Quake 2 have some pretty great tracks as well, being done by Trent Reznor and Sascha Dikycian (AKA Sonic Mayhem) respectively. Sascha also worked on the soundtrack for Mass Effect 3 (all of the Mass Effect games have good artists too, like Jack Wall, Clint Mansell, Cris Velasco, Brian DiDomenico, etc). Alexander Brandon also made some good music for Unreal (1998) and Deus Ex (2000), very synth-oriented. I couldn't tell you what my favorite Quake/Quake 2 tracks are, but for Mass Effect and Deus Ex, I'd have to go with "Rannoch" and "The Synapse".

If you would like to listen to our Croatian music producer for Serious Sam game series I suggest listening to Serious Sam 4's Citadel track, either both peace and fight tracks or only the fight track and Serious Sam 3's Hero either vocal version of the track where he sang himself or instrumental version for the pure music.

"The Choir of the Damned." Not a name for another song to check out or anything, that's the name that was given to the group that did the vocals for tracks like this one as well as Gladiator and Kar-En-Tuk. Mick Gordon actually went out and hired a bunch of both professional and amateur lead singers from metal bands, brought them into a small studio and explained to them the aim of each track's vocals was the screams of the damned. Ask me, they did an amazing job.

I would highly recommend checking out Andrew Hulshults remake of the original doom soundtrack, "IDKFA", very tasty:) He was also hired on for the Doom Eternal DLC music

Has anyone recommended any songs from ultrakill yet? A good one to listen to first might be *Unstoppable Force* And then *Requiem* And *Order* Order has some bits from requiem because the songs are related to the same thing but at different times

It's not a FPS but I think you'd like to check out Killer Instinct soundtrack at some point. Made by Mick Gordon which I didn't really know at the time (was before Doom eternal existed I think)
