This interpretation (not a cover for me) with one of the authors of the song (Toby Gad) playing the piano, is curative for the your soul and the soft background accompaniment of the piano and cello give her a beautiful silky backdrop, until that wonderful whispered final phrase "... but you are just a boy".💛🧡❤

Just to let you know, the other co-writer of the song, BC Jean, was the first to sing the song as well as the person the song came from. She had just broken up with the man that she loved. Per Toby, he played it for Beyonce one day and she really wanted to sing and use this song, and the rest you say is history. Bad Valentine is the first one they disclosed to the public. Is unreleased as jet but there's a live version of it they played, together with If I were a boy,at the Hotel Cafe in LA the day before they flew to London.
