You just stumbled across the finest lyric Soprano on the planet. She is a Christian with her roots in Gospel music. Sohyang does her own arrangements and the second half of that performance was pure Gospel - which you must also dislike. You do know from the first segment of this piece, that she can sing softly with an entrancing and angelic voice, but her sheer power and skill are obviously incomprehensible to you. She is not well known because she has shunned the seduction of the huge recording companies. However, she does have a huge catalog of amazingly stunning performances. But, never mind. Do not waste your time doing another Sohyang performance. It will be equally incomprehensible . . . . Cheers.

Before I comment on Sohyang, I urge you to listen to this again and listen to her backup singers. They compliment her vocals so much. Some of the chord sets they sing are just so delicious it is hard to describe them. Their voices are alive and have snap. As Sohyang continues on in this competition these singers just help her vocals that you feel more than notice. O.K. now to Sohyang. I think it was this song that she got out of her hospital bed to come and sing this song, then back to her hospital bed for another week. She was there because she had pneumonia. Sohyang is not a stranger to illness in her life. She had uterine cancer in her twenties that the Lord brought her through. She unfortunately lost the ability to have children so she has thrown herself into her music. She does all her own arrangements. But it is her electric singing that has us all enthralled. Sohyang is a devout Christian and which you might recognize some gospel touches she inserts into her arrangements. I think you will really enjoy following Sohyang's progress through this competition and then outside this competition. I won't make any recommendations here as you will be inundated with suggestions. I just say, enjoy she is special.

So Hyang is a 45 year old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After receiving a healing from God, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She IS NOT motivated by either money or fame. She has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! There is no denial that Sohyang is a vocal phenomenon, but I fully understand when a performance resonates with us for different, and very personal reasons. Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) she is from South Korea. I’m 73 years old and to me she is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST EVER

SoHyang is indeed a musical wonder with amazing vocals . However , can I suggest that you react to 4th Impact . They are 4 sisters from The Philippines with amazing harmonies. They auditioned for X Factor UK (2015) and the video of that audition has more than 191 million views on you tube. They can sing ANY genre of song. They have many cover songs and a few original sdongs on you tube and every one will leave you speechless.

I totally understand that one could think that it's over the top for this song. However, her purpose of performing this song, it is not because, I believe, she is depicting Jesus saying to the people that He will be there for them and lay down His life for them on the cross. Thus, she skips the third verse of the original song and focus on "I will lay me down" and depicts Him dying on the cross and tries to make it personal with a speaking voice at the end before the last cry.

It's too much because the song has so much energy and alive.

I'm absolutely from the era of the original and I think Sohyang took this pretty, folky song and brought it into the 21st century. Personally I would always prefer to hear a cover that is changed up from the original... ie Disturbed's version of 'The Sound of Silence' or Johnny Cash's version of 'Hurt'. So Hyang has often been considered the female Dimash. She has such amazing vocal control over the delicate parts of her voice as well as the power in her voice and everything in between. A duet between those two might be too much for a mere mortal to handle. The key to doing a memorable cover is to pay respect to the original but still make it your own. I think she exceeded in that respect.

I understand both sides, since I'm a man I get this gentleman's side of view, but I'm also a huge fan of SoHyang... it's easier for women to connect with songs they just look at the emotions itself, however the method used to create the emotions, they don't care about it much, we men are more attach to how the emotions are created as much as the final result of emotions. best way to enjoy songs more as men is to trick our brain to treat the song like a new one, How to do it is create a base line, by reading the lyrics along the singer singing, this create two level of emotions, me reading vs singer singing, then you can see in more detail how the singer creating a much bigger emotionally details outcome compared to me just reading which just the have the emotions come from just the meaning of the phrases. this way you start to see more of the singers work in more emotional sense compared to our own verses comparing another singer doing with their own artistic choice and stop being distracted from emotions since we are not comparing the methods of two different artists... There is no obligation that one has to stick to the original when singing a cover. That's a very shortsighted, conservative and limited view of music. People have different voices and different ways that they can sing in order to enhance their sound, and they may also convey their own message, even if the lyrics are the same. I respect your right to have a preference for sticking to the original, but there is actually no such need to copy the original to put on an excellent performance.
