When French plantation owners, fleeing revolution in Haiti, settled in the eastern part of Cuba in the late 18th century, the slaves that they brought with them imported a fusion of West African and French music and dance that became known as 'tumba francesa'. This tradition has been kept alive to this day through 'societies' and is inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
