This was such an emotional performance. Though i have to say, not enough people are talking abt how the crowd really added to the ambience of this song. From the beginning, they sang along, and it slowly died out as people were drawn in. Then my favourite was at the climax of the song and that one dude in the crowd belted before corey did. It just felt right

I absolutely agree. Crowd participation is exhilirating, especially when they're singing in tune and in time. It gives that extra oomph to a performance.

It’s hard for him not because of the meaning of the song but because Paul Gray died not long after it came out and this is dedicated to him.
@Treggify
@Treggify 2 жыл бұрын
Both are true; the song has taken on a new meaning sing Gray's passing because he advocated so hard for the song. But it also has a lot of emotions baked in already.
@kheidal
@kheidal 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely a bit of both, but hearing how he kinda struggles at parts it's clear the "meaning"/"reason" behind the lyrics are the main source.. also really how Corey himself have put it. The fact that Paul and Joey put music to the lyrics and how Paul pushed Corey to put the song of the album.. that's just that little extra sprinkle that make it even harder. But if you read the lyrics and know bits about the history behind the lyrics, it really speaks for itself as far as "the reason why Snuff is hard AF for Corey to perform live". Yes, Paul had a big part in the making and he was an excellent musician and he is missed daily by the band and fans... but honestly, Maggots seem to put too much of that into this particular one. My opinion at least.. from what I've read/heard Corey himself say about this one.

Background of this excellent song is a story in itself A lady in Coreys life helped him through addiction problems, he fell for her, she rejected him and it hit him hard He took this song to a Slipknot recording session, he thought it too melodic, but Paul liked it and encouraged him to develop it, as most of the bands lyrics were Shaun/Joey/Paul efforts at that time The encouragement he got from the band, through to the final Slipknot version of the song (which is so great! Creepy video mind!) was a turning point for him Then within a short period of the album coming out and tour, Paul sadly OD'd due to a prescription error causing heart failure - Paul was like Coreys brother and so this accoustic version took on a new meaning. He breaks down often singing it and the crowd always carries on for him until he pulls it together. He is an amazing vocalist and wordsmith, intelligent and ferocious at the same time Joey said this song was Coreys 'masterpiece' - he isnt wrong.

Thank you sincerely for this well explained back story of this song!! I knew about him being rejected, and I thought that i had heard that it was also tough for him because of a close friends death, but i could never find anything about exact incident, so figured it was two separate back stories and on was just rock lore. So they both happened and the song actually links the two life events for Corey! No wonder he gets so emotional, thank you again!!

Corey, just one of those singers that doesn't need an edit, doesn't need an effect, and can sing far back from a mic and his voice just goes. It just a voice you rarely hear these days and it is always refreshing to hear him sing and espically this song, it hits deep.

I have to disagree - sometimes it's a cool "add" - but sometimes, it's best to let the original do the talking. The message is everything with this song, not "adding" something to it. Usually the fills are nice though

You know over the years of listening to metal and all genres around it I've had well meaning and genuine friends ask me things along the lines of "how can you listen to such angry and sad music all the time without being so angry and sad all the time?" and I think this song (and what you said about it uplifting you hearing his pain) are what I take from the music. I feel love just like everyone else and I've been truly loved in my life thankfully....but there is just something so .....HUMAN....about hearing someone else give you a piece of their hurt like this. It's an intensely uncomfortable thing because it makes you reflect on your own pain. I've felt what he's saying here. I've lost a partner I thought I would spend my life with. I saw my best friend get shot and killed ...watched him bleed out on the pavement. I've watched the year long slide into whimpering, confused death when my grandmother passed from dimentia last year. Two weeks later "Constance" by Spiritbox came out and the music video came around and handed me that piece of hurt all over again and I cried whole heartedly in remembrance. In that moment its almost therapeutic to share that with someone even if its just through video and not as real as a hug or a shared moment in person. Some could call it being a masochist to willingly open yourself up to this but compared to happy and loving topics I think this is the frontier less explored and it reminds me I'm alive in a way. Just like dynamics in a song there has to be that counterpoint to put things in perspective. Not saying metal has a monopoly on that but I think the genre lends itself well to it given the sonic choices. Hard to play death metal and have the lyrics be about puppies and sunflowers. Unless you're the guys in Brojob.

I mean you see therapists on tv/movies and like dr phil and stuff telling you your not alone in them thoughts/feelings but sounding like a robot, here comes corey/slipknot and a lot of metal bands showing you them feelings, then it's not being told your not alone its seeing and feeling it.

your reaction was beautiful, hearing someone talk about the deeper emotion behind the performance and acknowledging the pain that music can carry. when you add the extra notes it feels like such a graceful compliment, and the way you just seem to gently offer it and take it away makes the song feel so much more full. thank you for this and for your unique perspective :)

Still cant cover this song without it hitting me towards the end. For corey its about his previous love then paul died and he dedicated the song to him as a more ironically positive thing. Howdy David! You did a good job describing how meaningful this song is. I have a vivid memory of a close friend and me walking at around midnight in the suburbs blasting metal when suddenly this song came up. We both stopped and looked around, and realized how silly and futile most things are and how nice it was to not really be doing much of anything but being with one another. Good times. You’ve done it again David, great as always It’d be cool if you could fit some Pendulum reactions into the schedule. A few good songs to start with are Witchcraft, Crush, Granite and The Fountain (I think you’d dig that one a lot)

This live version is great. I definitely prefer the album/music video version more as feels darker and I like dark :)

Me too. Most people prefer the live version which is great too but I loooove the studio version.

The way you play along I'd almost love to see you collab with someone like Jonathan Young to cover this song, haha.

Such an incredibly powerful song. Recommendation: And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope - Ne Obliviscaris

It may have been written about a partner, but the song has actually since come to be about Paul Grey. He was the original bassist for Slipknot and died not long after the song came out.
