This video is designed for those who are studying for Grade 3 ABRSM Music Theory exams. However, it will also be useful to those looking to revise the basics of intervals particularly in relation to calculating the name and number of an interval (at Grades 1 & 2 only the number is required).
It is important that viewers are fully familiar with calculating key signatures of up to 4 sharps and flats as well as being competent in calculating interval numbers before watching this video.

There's a big difference. For example, a minor 3rd above C is Eb whereas a diminished 4th is an Fb. Have a look at part 1 of these interval videos - the key thing to always look at is the 'number' of an interval.

They're used for a wide range of reasons e.g. helping singers pitch between 2notes, assisting beginners to understand relationships between notes, enabling composers to 'hear' notes before they play them... the list goes on. As a conductor the visual understanding of intervals helps me to see/hear what should be happening as opposed to what does happen. Intervals can be rather dry, timely and boring to study but they always help musicians improve their skills.

Down here in Brazil, we name the intervals quite different than yours . That's how we name then: 3 minor/major , 4th is always perfect, 5th minor/perfect/major, 6th is always perfect and 7 minor/major, 8ve, 9th minor/major, 11th minor/major and 13 minor/major.

To figure out the interval of a Major 7th (C-B) which is 11 semi-tones. Knowing that there are 12 semi-tones in an octave, you can simply make the dustance smaller by inverting the interval. This is sometimes called "The Rule of Nine" which states when inverting intervals use the opposite quality (name) and make sure the number adds up to nine.

R. White Thanks for the info. I am wondering what is the definition for the rule of 9, it's purpose and when and how to use it. Does it relate to both Major and Miner scaler theory? Thank you for your reply in advance:)

Therefore, a Major seventh inverted is a minor second (Major->minor; 7 + 2) As this relates to semitones, B is only one semitone down from C. This also helps when determining Major and relative minor keys. Most count up a Major 6th (C-A), but can find it counting down a minor third which is much faster. A diminished fourth inverted would be an Augmented fifth.

If you count the note-heads from C to F (as Stephen says, always work out the number of an interval first) you will count four, meaning the interval is a fourth. For it to be a fifth it would have to be a derivative of C to a derivative of G. Therefore, although F# and Gb are enharmonically equivalent, they would result in a different answer in an interval question. C-F# is an augmented 4th, while C-Gb is a diminished fifth.

Treat F# and F as two very different notes. However, I'm not quite sure why you'd be counting from F or F# if, as you say, you're using F# minor. I'd always refer back to intervals in C Major, as per my video, so that you can be sure you're always calculating the correct number of semitones. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

The only quality exempt (and it's not actually) is the Perfect interval. Quality doesn't change, but the interval does. Perfect fifth + Perfect fourth which adds up to the Perfect Octave. (Despite 4 + 5 =/= 8)

In the first example, F major, why do we count to E instead of F while comparing to C major which gives us 4 semitones. In the second example, G minor, we count to G which is 7 semitones?

What is a Minor second I've heard people talking about it but it doesn't seem to be written down anywhere. A second that is a semi-tone above the tonic? Where in a melodic, natural, harmonic minor...NO! I've only seen this in the Hijaz scale and in modes!!!!!.... No but in all seriousness I'm an amateur musician with minimal music theory knowledge and have never been taught classically and I'm fucking dying to figure out what the difference between a minor second and a major second is.... PLEASE HELP
