Find out how to draw the Circle of Fifths and why it's so incredibly useful! Learn how to use the circle of fifths to work out all the major keys, all the minor keys and all their key signatures. When it comes to music theory, the circle of fifths is one of the most important concepts you can learn. Useful for notation, transposition, understanding key signatures, and familiarising yourself with the general structure of music, it is well worth your time to add the circle of fifths to your vault of music theory knowledge. The circle of fifths can seem a little overwhelming at first, but you will soon realise how easy it really is to understand. The circle of fifths is the relationship among the 12 tones of the chromatic scale, their corresponding key signatures, and the associated major and minor keys. Looking at the circle - the outer section shows the actual key signatures and accidentals, the middle circle represents the corresponding major keys and the inner circle represents the corresponding minor keys. The reason it’s called the circle of fifths is because of the interval relationships between each key signature. Each key, or accidental is a fifth up from the previous. It's amazing how it all works. The circle of fifths is an essential tool in music theory, and you’ll be surprised how often it comes in handy. With the massive amounts of information that musicians need to memorise on a regular basis, we can tell you that the circle of fifths will make your life a lot easier.

I just want to endorse all that you've said. Myself as a former music teacher and professional musician, it cannot be stressed how important this information is. Fortunately for me, when I was a child, my piano teacher drilled all of this information into me pretty thoroughly. On the practical side and as an organist, I was invited to perform with a dance orchestra years ago but there was no music for me to follow plus many of the pieces used were unfamiliar to me. I was sitting close to the pianist and I simply asked him what key each piece or song was in. From there, even if I had no idea of the tune, I could play a meaningful accompaniment which seemed to surprise many other people. Knowledge of the Circle of Fifths was so helpful plus a knowledge of primary or principal chords. The rest of it was all very predictable because most music follows fairly standard guidelines. If you, as a reader, are an early learner, start to memorise the Circle of Fifths and it will stand you in very good stead for your musical future. When I was teaching (I'm now 76 and now retired) I also gave my students a simple way of remembering the order of sharps which was, "Fry's Chorcolates Give Delight After Every Bite". The flats are the same letters in reverse or you can remember the word BEAD - then add GCF. There are many ways of making the order stick in the memory and that's just one. If by chance, you play Piano Accordion, the bass buttons are arranged in the same order.

I cannot express how much you have helped me. I used to think that learning theory was a waste of time and would focus mostly on building up my technique. But not anymore (thanks to your epic explanations). The theory I've learnt from you and my music teacher has helped me bring another layer of depth to my violin, piano and guitar playing and even try my hand at composing. Most people who try teaching (anything really) just show off and try to convince everyone of how good they are in their chosen profession. But you never do that. You are humble and a delight to watch. THANK YOU so very much for what you do. My kindest regards to you, my dear sir.

Thank you so much! I have been playing and composing music for decades and I have some weak areas due to my impatience. I just want to move on to making music! But that caused me to jump over getting good theoretical grounding in those areas. I am at a point where I am identifying those weak areas and strengthening them. I made a very conscious effort to learn and understand the circle of fifths. I finally have got it and it's a very powerful tool. As a songwriter who didn't know my keys, I often hunted and pecked around the keyboard to find chords and melodies that sounded good together. Now I have a roadmap which tells me exactly how to find them. Also, I never knew how to transpose. The circle makes it easy. This is the best, most useful bit of music theory I've found.

Finally someone made every principle and pattern clear; all the other Circle of Fifths explanatory videos and web sites can be taken down. You've reduced the entire problem to only remembering four things : 7th interval of the key for sharps, fourth for flats, each sharp or flat then determines the same key falling farther down in the circle, and relative minor is a third interval lower than the corresponding major. And you've explained why some describe the flat side as intervals of fifths, while others describe it as intervals of fourths. I regularly tell young people that all education is auto-didactic; teachers don't really teach anything, they provide structure for self-teaching. Sir, you have proven me wrong.

In high school band our director shared the order of sharps: F C G D A E B. To find the key shown on the staff by the number of sharps, count two more sharps ahead; i.e. three sharps? Count F C G (shown on the staff) and go to more: D A. The key shown is A major. For flats the order is reversed: B E A D G C F . To find the key shown count back one flat: i.e. three flats? B E A (shown on the staff) and go back one to E. The key shown is Eb major. Gareth, our teacher here, does a fine job presenting "key" information. I haven't seen man of his other videos but this one is very basic. Other videos will have to show relationships of keys, modulation, etc. Thanks, Gareth!

Thank you so much! I never heard any instructor explained so clear and so detail. I was so confuse the circle of fifths since my instructor only showed us one or two samples. Basically, I need to pre-study and search from online to get some help and still confuse with why F#, C#..... Since I am just a beginner, it is hard to find a step by step music theory teaching program. I was very lucky to see this video before I plan to quit my class. . You are a super teacher with lots of patience. I really appreciate for your precious time! God blessings!

First video of this channel that I have seen and I have subscribed straight after hitting the 'Like' button. I usually only take it to 12 keys, the overlapping key being Gb rather than F# because I was taught that key signatures are either Natural or Flat, and never are they sharp. If you like patterns you can try writing it out for 12, 13, 14, and 15 keys and looking for the overlaps and other patterns. The circle of 5th really comes in to its own when explaining chord constructions, and when with another person who appreciates what a wonderful tool the Circle of 5ths is I can even manage to show them why the 7th note of a 7th chord is actually a flattened 7th, and why the 9th is not flattened. You will be able to unlock patterns for evermore once you get into this. The virtues of knowing and understanding the Circle of 5th cannot be over stated. I have been messing around with it for over forty years, so I really haven't learned a thing from this video, other than this is one of the best videos that try to explain the wonder that is the Circle of 5th. With videos like this there are absolutely no excuses for not being able to understand some basic music theory. Thanks again for a wonderful lesson Sir.
