Hard to believe that this album wasn't well recieved by a lot of the hardcore fan base. This album screams maturity! The lyrics, the musicianship, song structures, the theme and the production values all showcase the evolution of the band. Now that this concludes their commitment to a record label, it will be interesting to see if and how far they're willing to push the limits of their music to a new horizon. This band has pushed and exceeded every conventional and contemporary limit as to what's possible, having any remaining handcuffs removed, sure opens the doors to a lot wonder and what ifs... Thanks again for sharing your dopamine rush with the rest of us. Looking forward to your next installment. ✌🤘

eye think if you got into Tool pre-Aenima, you are probably a punk at heart, and the anger and energy of the early stuff is where your heart is. that they have become so progressive post-Aenima is of course evolution in full effect, and they have mastered their own sound on this album to perfection imho. there's part of me (sorry) that knows without doubt that Undertow is Tool's greatest emotional outpouring, but as a musician and lover of brilliantly crafted soundscapes and music, the next installment i am always stoked to hear. for me FI is a reassuring continuation of form and the thirteen years it took to make it means that this is probably about as complex and polished as music of this sort has ever been.

You wait, give it a few more years and it will be understood that this album was on the same tier as Lateralus. An album like this takes time to reveal its secrets. All the people chirping the first week of release due to their own misguided expectations are going to be a distant memory. This album is a masterpiece through and through. Gets better with every listen.

I am not usually a lyrics person, but this song......it just speaks to me! I am an old man. My body is wrecked from 25 years of hard work with no ergonomics. I am full of metal from many surgeries. I live with chronic pain, so, "Beating tired bones, Tripping through remember when, Once invincible, Now the armor's wearing thin, Heavy shield down....." is me to a core!! Of course this is Tool, so what it means to me might not be what they meant at all! :)

I cannot decide if I like Invincible or Pneuma the most. Both are absolute masterpieces. What I love about both songs is how the guys “lego” the songs together, at least Adam and Justin. They have like 3 riffs each that they tweak and mix and experiment with. And in the end they come up with two near 10-minute songs that doesn’t sound boring or repetitive. Also, Danny is an octopus god and Maynard has a golden pen and voice.

This song has a very deep personal meaning and association for me that has little to do with the common interpretation of the lyrics. I can rarely listen to it without crying. My daughter, when pregnant with my grandson, had a very big scare where she started to go into early labor at 23 weeks. She called me from the hospital and I could hear the fear in her voice as she told me that she needed me to come be with her. I leapt into my car and flew down the highway. A few minutes after getting into the car, through the fog of terror, and tears and prayers, I realized that Invincible was playing. My gramdson had already been named- Atrayu- a warrior's name. This song suddenly told me that our little Warrior would prevail- he would be Invincible. And he did. And he is. And I'll always remember that day when I hear this.

I saw them last year and for whatever reason, acoustics of the building speaker placement etc., the bass was just a bit louder than it should have been. I mean I always knew Justin was an absolute master of his trade but this little engineering "mistake" gave me a whole new perspective/insight into all the crazy stuff Justin actually does. I guess they don't call him the Wizard for nuthin'.

Adam said that he often hears Justin come up with a sick bass riff, and he'll take it and give Justin HIS part. And then sometimes Danny will play a guitar or bass section
@cb4me450
@cb4me450 2 жыл бұрын
Apparently that happened with Descending. Justin wrote the opening tune as a bass part. Adam took it and they swapped. Caused some issues, that song ended up being the longest to get the final version and most rehearsed, and by the end none of them wanted to play it for a while. At least that's what Justin said in an interview.

This album is a rare treasure for a number of reasons. For a band who were blowing minds in the 90s to still be together is incredible. For them to release an album this good after all these years is also very rare. So many of my favourite bands from the era split up, went too experimental or just started sounding old and repetitive but Tool has even improved on their previous effort here… just my opinion.

Hey John, glad you enjoy your TOOL journey ! Keep it up ! Just don't have a heart attack from all the syncopations ahah (the bass ;) ). Some details you might find relevant to better grasp the TOOL universe. For the guitar (but also for the bass), Adam tunes in Drop D that's why the E string is lower than standard tuning and it gives this heaviness. He likes open strings too. But you might have noticed also that the guitar is very bright and distinguishable, it's because Adam tweaks a lot with the EQ, mids and highs to have this heaviness mixed with this bright guitar tone. Among other things, he has this Diezel VH4 Amp he can also tweak with the EQ, mids (not a lot of gain in general I noticed). His 1979 Les Paul has Seymour Duncan pickups on the bridge that gives this powerful sound. And as you also noticed he uses a lot palm muting and pull-off techniques. For the middle section "solo", keep in mind that TOOL are composed of 4 members, each having their own part. As you clearly hear Adam on the guitar, this is Justin and his bass, with a whammy (if I'm correct). He is such a killer bass player. Finally, the synths are played by Adam most of the time. You can hear in Descending and even in previous songs. They have a regular keyboard but they also have a foot synths that Adam plays when he is playing the guitar. But here with Invincible, it's Danny who's playing the "synth" part. In live footage you can see it but if you pay attention you can deduce since Adam is the only one playing, no drums. As you said, they compliment each other so well. The guitar can be the percussions, the bass can be the soloist and the drums can lead as a guitar would. That's why TOOL is like no other band. Looking forward to your reaction on Descending and 7empest. As a guitarist, you should appreciate those two. "One" word to qualify these two songs : guitar effects.

1992...chilling at U of Delaware Main St....some dude slow-crawls by me and he has Prison Sex on the radio I would say a bunch of other shit, but that drive-by.... that 'passing of Tool'.... I went on to see that band ('93-'13) over 52 times. Waterloo Village NJ was the first Lollapalooza bullshit that I saw them and knew they were gonna break out

My absolute favorite reaction to TOOL'S music so far. You were spot on with your thoughts on this song. For as simple as TOOL can make a song sound, the more you listen, the more you realize how complex it is, and by the time you realize how complex it is the band shows you that they were only getting started. No doubt about it, in my lifetime, and to me, TOOL is the greatest band ever. Thanks for sharing your reaction.

I've been listening to this band since Undertow released and the end of this song has to be one of the pinnacles of their library. I mean, I love the whole song, but that ending... I used to hang out in an underground music/skate shop (skate boarding wasn't so popular/tolerated back then) and they got copies of Undertow on release day and played it. I think I might've seen a video before on Alternative Nation or something, but they played it in the shop and I was hooked.

You want an experience? Come out to the southwest and camp in the desert, campfire, stars and this album on shrooms. Me and my navajo bud had a life changing experience. We both are better people Bound to this flesh. Make it worth the short time we are here.

This one just popped up in my recommended videos., and I gotta say, it makes me happy, too! Every time I listen, I hear something new it seems. In this song, during that groove breakdown, I love that Danny, in the fourth round (or whatever the fuck it is called) does not mute the hi hat. It is like a harbinger of what comes next. So fantastic, I want to hear it again and again. Starts at about 18:05 in your video. BTW, love the look on your face at that point, too.😊

Yep. This album makes me happy, also. It’s hard to believe that someone could make music sound this powerful. But…. Tool does it. Their music doesn’t even sound human. They’re from a race more superior than ours. They tap into a part of the mind that I didn’t know existed. It’s pretty remarkable, to say the least.

I know Maynard said this song was about being a veteran but I feel like there is an underlying relevance to the state of the band. “Warrior, struggling, to remain, relevant” They’ve been leading the prog/rock charge for so many decades. Really reading into these lyrics make me feel like they parallel the bands progression. “Cry aloud, bold and proud, o’where I’ve been, but here I am”
