At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar.
But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer.
Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music.
And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion.
But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces.
And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent.
Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work.
There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress.
We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers.
If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music.

I played classical guitar in my teens till my mid 20's, but in 2022 I got covid and it destroyed my memory, I got mental fog and hard time to remember even simple things, It affected my work and life a lot, I decided to play again guitar 25 years later, it amazing how things got better, is like my brain was in pause and with the guitar turn on again, since then I'm playing more and your techniques are very good. thx.

Great tips Alan. Learning pieces ‘by heart’ has made a big difference to my practice regime. And great to be able to rattle something off in front of friends and family.

Thanks for sharing how we can improve our guitar playing by memorizing the whole music pieces and breaking them into smaller parts so we can repeat playing until we can perfect them.

Excellent, Allen! As an older player, returning to classical guitar AND having always been a poor sight reader, I have found that I do have to slog through reading a piece to find out what notes are played. After that sometimes painful process, I do memorize the passage by note position on the neck so that I can play (and concentrate on) the guitar. I never thought of it as a workaround, just as part of the process. Hmmm...

Musical memory depends largely on what 'tool' or instrument you use to make it. Eg when I learn to sing a song, which works quickly for me, I can still remember and reproduce it years later. The guitar is a completely different story. It is a very complex instrument where many things are involved. You have to regularly refresh your repertoire. There is no silver bullet technique to solve this if you only depend on memory. Which implies that the number of pieces that you can manage and learn by heart is limited. On the contrary, if you can read music well, the range of what you can learn is much greater and the time to master something is shorter. I experienced this with Bach. The time to master technically such a piece is nothing compared to the time you need to memorise it. And the more Bach you know, the more difficult it becomes.

I play a song just by hearing it and I can sing it with the quitar.

When you remember a piece what are you remembering? Is it sound, finger positions or notes/tabs or all three?

Great question, Colin. It's all three. It's also the music theory (to whatever extent you know it), the expression/mood, the way the melody/bass/accompaniment work together, how the piece is similar to other pieces you've played, and anything else you notice. The more you can get to know the piece, the easier it will be to remember.
