Musical Paradise MP301 MKIII: Objective Testing Review

I was sent this amp to test and review from @intoitreviews
He included a bunch of driver tubes to roll into it and did his own review linked below. I haven't watched it as I didn't want it to influence my evaluation.

I love mine , retubed it , very harmonic and bass is there , I have a small treated den and it’s perfect for my room and me

Sorry, but it's not possible the "bass is there", either the music you listen to doesn't really have much bass or the speakers you are used to listening to don't go down there. Objective measuring doesn't lie.

@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics well I wouldn’t exactly call Robert Ludwig Led Zeppelin ii anemic in the low region or Mingus Mingus bass a single rubber band recording. My Wharfedale bookshelf’s don’t produce subwoofer low frequencies but it’s adequate for my small room. I don’t expect teeth rattling bass from something as low power as this unit , that’s why I have my solid state system . Oh and I do plan on purchasing a decware unit and match it with the appropriate speakers , no klipsh , I tried them and sent them back .

Would you recommend this amp to someone who is just entering into the world of tubes? Speakers are Cabasse Antigua 170 with 88 sensitivity, small bedroom. Kind regards.

Stephe, have you checked out Musical Paradise preamp? I’ve actually thought of buying one and trying it out. So many options to dial in a sound you like. The power supply is even in a different box attached under the amp part of it.

Nope. My preamp is silent without resorting to putting the power supply in another box.

If it's the mp-701 the power supply is part of the unit just shielded. I customized mine. Don't know how it measures but I am thrilled how it sounds.

I’ve built 4 EAR 834p clones over the past two years or so, and every single one ends up being in a friends system. #5 is mine! lol With the first 2, I added partitions between the PSU and amp. On number 3 I didn’t have one, and it ended up being silent anyway. The design and layout is very important too. As a tube audio person, I just thought you might get a kick out of the interesting design

@@SkunkieDesignsElectronicsOn top of that, there’s an obvious issue with not being able to convey inflection of something said in a comment, text, email, etc… 😜 Last time I checked, that particular preamp was like $700 or less. I would’ve probably bought it and had that preamp in pieces after giving it a listen anyway, taking a few somewhat basic measurements, changing a few things, and likely ending up getting rid of it. The design looks interesting, but I have my doubts. Of course, your preamp is gonna sound better. It was built with care and heaven forbid, actual thinking,

The MP-301 has been my introduction to listening with a valve headphone amp. I know you get what you pay for so I'm under no illusions about it's limitations but I'm super interested to hear what you find.

I have some new Mullard EL34's and NOS Red Raytheons in my MP301 hooked up to Tekton Mini Lores. It's a fun second system I listen to in near field. Detailed and airy. Bass is umm...adequate lol. Can't hear when playing music, but I can hear some hum with the Tektons. And the headphone jack is brutal noisy. Not something I would use it for anyways. Summary: Decent, fun value. You get what you pay for.

You were right about using glass driver tubes. Steph's measurements prove it.

A little Schade feedback will help that driver pentode to behave. If you're getting to full power with .25V input you could stand to lose some input sensitivity. I'd love to see what the frequency response would be with the teeny-tiny Edcors.

Could the low frequency roll off be a poor choice of coupling capacitor value for the input impedance of the stage they are feeding? Would be interested to see what value resistors and coupling caps they use on the inside. Maybe there is some more low frequency still possibly? Lets hope.

I haven't been able to find a schematic. Looks like a .22uf coupling cap to a 200K grid leak impedance, not ideal but not enough to kill all the low frequency like this. Swapping this to a 470K grid leak would help and still is in spec for an EL34. They probably used a 200K for the cheapo China output tubes they have stock, which like to leak grid current. There is another .22uf film cap, not sure what it is doing.

I looked at the manual which consists of five pages and nothing about biasing the output tubes. Is there a bias adjustment?

Not like with a pot. The bias is set by the cathode resistor.

Would it make any sense to test THD at 100 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 10,000Hz?

you can see what it did at 100hz with the freq vs THD, and 200hz vs 100hz? At 100HZ you can see it would be even worse.

The signal clipping is asymmetrical. These are odd harmonics, which is bad for the sound.

I appreciate the testing. I’m not impressed with this amp. The output transformers are the heart of the amp and that seems to be where they cut cost.

It also has the same issue ALL these chifi tube amps have which is INSANELY high input sensitivity.

@@SkunkieDesignsElectronicsin your opinion what input signal should be required to reach full output power? I know some people think .5vrms but I often design for more like 1vrms. Most modern sources say they can output 2vrms.

1Vrms is a good target. 3Vpp is something any source should be able to deliver.

Does Canadian law allow objectively false claims? If Musical Paradise was even close to honest, I might consider their cheap and cheerful Chi-Fi.

Wasted 15 minutes of my life. To busy looking for things that are not there. Missed parameter and blade failures are reasons to lose. There are no rules for good intention or intent. If you want to help someone out at the detriment to your own work that's your choice during a competition or in life. If you want to catch the judges cheating watch them testing in slow motion. Sometimes they strike with the side of the knife or sword
