Such a great reaction... "I go to prepare a place for you" reportedly the last words of Harriet Tubman before she passed and you can tell Cynthia is embodying those words... making a place for other women of colour.

This song speaks to Black people in a special way and if any Black people were judging it they would have said “of course this wins” or a even a yt ally can be like “Yupp this isn’t my history but it deserves the award for the people it’s about and their history” like….it tears me up inside.

I really appreciate this reaction. Thank you for speaking on the significance of this song and of how perfect yet pathetic this moment was. The fact that she was the only person of color nominated, the fact that she would have been (and should have been) the youngest EGOT ever. Not youngest woman, not youngest POC no youngest period. And the fact that she didn't win. Everyone in that room and at home watching who is slightly aware had the same thoughts running through their heads as you just explained in this video. Beautiful reaction, incredible performance. ❤

Absolutely true. His last line: “Stand up.” is what sat with me the most. Harriet’s calling was to free her people & Cynthia’s performing (& writing) of this powerful piece about that is not just a history lesson, but a call to action. Everyone needs to fight. For equality, for freedom, for mankind. It’s time for us to “Stand Up.”

This is not just a song, and this was just not a performance, this is an anthem for all people of color. The raw emotion she displayed was simply amazing, and the fact she didn't win really didn't surprise anybody because the Oscars have a long history of turning their backs on black themed movies and music, the history of blacks and their struggles just don't matter especially in hollywood. As a black male Cynthia Erivo in singing this song has invoked emotions out of me I didn't know existed, it has change me in many ways I can't get into but Ms Erivo in my mind and many others you have already won an oscar, your performance in the movie and your gut wrenching vocals in the song, its just, all I can say is BRAVO and THANKYOU........................................................

OK, let me start by saying that she hit a high B. Cynthia Erivo sings about the challenges, goals of her characters. First of all she has the voice and an incredible range. Through her voice and body she conveys the incredible spirit of her characters. She communicates, for me, a social awareness and intelligence. She is the total package. Watching you, Marc, as always, brought a deeper appreciation of her gifts. I look forward to your next "class."

I absolutely adore Cynthia, she is insanely talented. In my opinion this song was one of the most important songs in decades to be nominated for an Oscar. I was sure that she would win so I was angry and disappointed when she didn't. Elton's song didn't even come close the mastery of "Stand Up" (lyrics, melody and soul). Cynthia is a Queen, her portrayal of Harriet is amazing in the movie and she deserves to be acknowledged for her passion and talent❤️.

Cynthia Erivo is one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I have learned so much from your videos and it is great to appreciate her skill and artistry in new ways. I loved what you said about it seeming like she was getting a vision from God that was carrying her through the song, because Harriet Tubman DID have visions! That’s how she often knew where to go or how to travel safely when taking people to freedom. She described her visions and faith as being what got her through a life of unimaginable difficulty. I love that Cynthia was able to portray that kind of story in a song of only a few minutes. She is simply amazing.

She hits the lows and highs so well! Its got such depth and feeling that doesn't come from direction. That comes from you as a person. The fact of the matter is, I could not sing this song with as much feeling as she does because I am not black. I dont understand that history or the times we are living with now. She is speaking such truth through this song.

Thank you for your insightful comments not just on the technical aspects of her vocal abilities and the quality of the performance but also highlighting the real life & current climate in which this song sadly is still relevant. As a black female performer this aspect of the song, the timing along with all that has and continues to happen I was in tears. It just struck in a way I was not prepared for- the struggle, challenges, pain, resilience, hope, and strength embodied in the continued fight to live a quality life where one is seen, heard, and valued.

Elthon's song was fine, nice, fun and loving. But THIS!! It still makes me sad. I know it's just a statue but the weight it has, the recognition for her as an artist and the story she is telling. This song was on a whole different level. And the ending always gets me, after this whole build up ; a quiet 'I'll go prepare a place for you'. This song will stay with me for years too come .(And I am sure with many others as well)

I LOVE this song and I LOVE this reaction!! You were so brilliant here, as well as Cynthia herself of course! Thank you for always providing honest reactions. I love watching them and hearing your insight. Every time I listen to this song, I feel empowered as a black woman. The strange thing is, I feel both empowered and angered at the same time; angered that this is both the history and present reality of America. It is both an exhausting anger and a motivating one. My hope is that we, as a human race, never get too tired or too exhausted to continue fighting for real, full equality for all in every aspect of this life. My hope is that we stay as motivated as many seem to be right now, to breaking down barriers of all kinds. You are right, it is pathetic that we are still having these conversations. It is incredibly sad and I’m glad that you pointed it out. It will take real honesty and real work on everyone’s part, whatever that work might look like for us individually, to create a different world than what we are so accustomed to. Here’s to hoping that we see it one day!! I didn’t mean for this comment to get this deep 🙂 Again, wonderful reaction!

Would love to have you review her singing Always/goodbye……different singing style. Cynthia is the most amazing singer to come along in years . She is the real deal and connected to spirit…that is why she evokes such a reaction in us. I love her ….talented humble full of grace.

That was beautiful. Marc Daniel Patrick LOVES HIM some Cynthia Erivo! 😆His efforts to further promote the imperative nature of equality are noted and appreciated. And... Hollywood is Hollywood and is its own form of Old Boys Network. Things are gradually improving, but nobody cares that this may have been the best performance of the night or the most significant song nominated. NOBODY CARES that Erivo would have been the youngest E.G.O.T. winner in history. Nobody cares. Hollywood is Hollywood. Humility and longevity is the name of the game. Consider how long it took DiCaprio to win an Oscar. Erivo is a babe in the eyes of Hollywood. HOW MANY have worked in Hollywood for DECADES, yet never received an Oscar? How many more have NEVER EVEN BEEN NOMINATED? Take a ticket and stand in line is how most of Hollywood feels. A mere nomination is an honor. HUMILITY is the name of the game. WHY are you an artist? For the sake of accolades and Awards? Or, for the sake of communicating the messages in which you believe? Erivo accomplished her goal. Period. HUMILITY is the name of the game. 💛
