"It was not a place for law abiding citizens." I was only 15 years old first time I got into Mother (Maw) Blues It was a crazy place and you never knew who might walk in the door and pick up a mic or guitar and jump up on stage..... well Google the rest and you will know. However, I never saw Ray Wylie there unfortunately. Thanks for the upload. -Salute - "And the days I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, Well I have pretty good days" -Ray Wylie Hubbard -

I played with Donovan at Mother Blues in the 80’s around the same time Ray Wiley taught me the Waylon tune “Waymore Blues” which I still play. I opened for Tony Joe White a couple of years before he passed and no one was cooler!

Blessed to have come across your comment good sir I am currently working on becoming a better guitar and bass player I currently own a spectrum six string electric guitar at of which I need to restring and retune and my four string electric bass guitar is a Dean. People such as yourself and Ray Wyle Hubbard have been truly inspirational and have been a good insight to my journey for both bass and the guitar my hopes is to one day yet again start playing and own an aquistic six string guitar the best of wishes and may all of you have a wonderful holiday season and yes I'm from TX. 😎🤟

I keep Waylon in heavy rotation and Waymore Blues is one of my favorites, that and Gypsy Woman! If you wanna get to Heaven gotta D. I. .E., gotta put on your coat and T. I. E. is my favorite verse and it always made me feel like he was just ad libbing the whole song the first time I heard it. I have Waylon's Greatest Hits in one cassette deck and Wanted! The Outlaws in the other my shop stereo and it auto changes from one side to the other and then changes cassettes, back and forth until I turn it off. It drives my wife nuts but she still puts up with me. Man they don't make em like they used to. Man it sounds like you had a great time and if there is any video footage, put it up; we all want to see and hear it. Cheers!

Ray Wylie Hubbeard is so great..... Mother Blues... Wow. Loved that place back in the 70s. Ya I saw freddie king there and shook his huge hand. What a great guy and player he was. Saw rod stewart sitting in the club just haning out. Jimmy page came in one night and lit the place up. I got busted in the parking lot for weed. I was given the option to eat it or go to jail. It was yummy... lol Ah the memories

I went to Ma Blues all the time. I lived off Lemmon+Wycliff and could walk there. I'd watch greats like Stevie Ray, Bugs Henderson, Nitzinger, and on occasion Jimmy Page or Freddie King would sit in. I'd say "I'm gonna play here some day." Well, I can't remember how many times I played there. I was bass/vocals for several bands including Krakatoa, HEXX and Release. Bugs, Jimmie Vaughn and Big John O'Daniels of Point Blank would sit in from time to time. Ma's was such a cool place. Gone now.

Mother Blues was probably the only live music venue in Dallas that had the owner, Bill Simonson, living at the bar (upstairs, for a short while).Freddie King, Robert Plant, Paul Rogers, Zappa..etc., the local bands Nitzinger, Lightning, Brat, Toys...etc. The patrons were much like a big, extended family and the employees were as friendly as they could be. Even "Tiny" at 7'2", 348 lbs had a big heart. Hoppy (Freddie King's mgr) was a friendly, humble, funny guy. Great music, beautiful woman and no shortage of mood enhancers.
