Congratulations on finding the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Their founder and bassist announced her departure on Aug 17, 2021, so we can only hope they find a way forward. Meanwhile, we console ourselves with their astonishing catalogue of work. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miho and Miyako have composed most of their music, in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer, but Midori has also been getting into the act. Asami writes a lot of the lyrics. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. and aced it all. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and at this point they’ve taken it to another level. This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash, and almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel. Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. Miyako is also a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. If you want to see what she can do on the piano, watch “Swan Song” WITH the prelude, which is Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude”. Miyako wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Etude. This link should work: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaiYp9SYzr6pcWg.html; but if it is taken down, you can watch two clips back to back: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqpyncyCrp_HqZc.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6ujeLp6uMmcgWQ.html I promise, it’s worth it. They are generally best live. You should next check out their most recently posted live clip, “Set the World on Fire” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5-qpqtnzq3DZpc.html. Other live songs to check out are "Edge of the World" and "We the United", back to back: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdJgYLhe3tGuc4k.html They form an incredible journey from darkness and despair to light and hope. Also, “Empty Daydream”, which starts as a ballad and becomes a real rocker: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/or6Ykth-sp-Ymok.html. For a thrasher with heavy Metallica vibes, “Break the Wall” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZZiZMSBl8fTZo0.html includes two gorgeous and completely contrasting solos by M&M. For a heart-stopping ballad, “Epilogue” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9-eobt1y6vSno0.html (this includes a second song, your choice whether or not to react to both) Finally, while it’s generally true their live clips are best, their MV’s are epic and worth seeing: "When Destinies Align" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrJ2mM96npm6m4E.html "Glory to the World" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y916p6djvau8eGg.html "Winds of Transylvania" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftl1Z7iTxLbOmGw.html. You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the sound quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Also, you can’t go wrong with any of their official clips. Welcome to the Wolf-Pack!

LOVEBITES - Holy War lyrics: Look at those black clouds, it’s going to rain blood People live in fear, covered in mud Singing oh Gloria to change the prophecy We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for sisters There is a thousand, a thousand of evils Hush, do not wake up Satan’s devils Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for brothers Shining blade and burning heart Into the Gates of Hell we march Immortal soul, let there be light Into the Eye of Heaven Eagles at a holy war Fly higher than the sun We are one for all and all for one forevermore Kingdom of Heaven, never shall we fall Reincarnation, wait for your call Singing oh, Gloria to change the prophecy We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for sisters Morning star and dying moon Into the Gates of Hell we march Mighty soul, let there be hope Into the Eye of Heaven Eagles at a holy war Fly higher than the sun Stand up in the name of the God of heavy metal What do we live for?What do we fight for, tonight? But the world is beautiful, worth fighting for Only have one thing on our mind Facing the fate, holy war Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for brothers Shining blade and burning heart Into the Gates of Hell we march Immortal soul, let there be light Into the Eye of Heaven Eagles at a holy war Fly higher than the sun We are one for all and for one forevermore What do we live for?What do we fight for, tonight? As a guitarist it is interesting to note that both guitarists started to learn to play relatively late. Midori (blond playing the ESP) dropped out of university at the age of twenty where she was studying pharmacy to attendone of the premier music colleges in Osaka where she studied guitar. Miyako (black hair playing the Dean) is primarily a concert level classical pianist who picked up a guitar at eighteen and taught herself to play. Both of them played in metal core bands before joining Lovebites. They are both insanely talented muscians at the top of their game. I suggest you react to Lovebites 'Epilogue', 'Edge of the World' and 'Empty Daydream' to hear another side of the band.

@garykeeling2275
@garykeeling2275 3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnPMatias16 Just a guess, but one may be a dead mic just there for appearances, since they were filming this show for the DVD. She has talked before about preferring to use the double kicks because it is nearly impossible to get double bass drums to achieve the same sound consistently, especially for an entire show if one drum should come out of tune slightly.
@garykeeling2275
@garykeeling2275 3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnPMatias16 I just watched the video again on a larger screen, where it is easier to see. If you look very closely at the 3:07 mark in this reaction video, you can see the double kicks, although it goes by really quick. If you watch it from the original video, I'm not sure what the time stamp would be, but it is during the third pre-chorus (the last one before the solos), when she is singing, "fighting the darkness for sisters," the camera flashes on Haruna's right side from the back, so you can see the double kicks right as Asami is singing the word "darkness."

A couple other suggestions from the VERY deep world of Japanese female metal: Nemophila ("supergroup" with a great range of styles within the broader metal genre); "Raitei," "Life," or "Dissension" would be good starting points with this band, who are on a rapid upward trajectory. And Hanabie ("harajukucore"), with "We Love Sweets" being the best way to start; I guarantee your jaw will hit the floor about 8 seconds in. ;) Coincidentally, both bands have flower-related names: "nemophila" is a five-petaled (it's a 5-piece band) flower, and "hanabie" (花冷え) means "flower cold" or "flower chill," probably best rendered in English as "coldflower." There are literally dozens of amazing bands in this scene. Personally, high-velocity powermetal is one of my favorite metal subgenres (not much of a death/black metal guy), so a lot of Lovebites' material really works for me. While they do change the pace, a lot of Lovebites' stuff is similarly energetic. Astonishingly, the Drummer Haruna can maintain that energy level for entire 2-hour concerts - it's not for nothing she's earned the nickname "the pocket nuclear reactor" ("pocket" because she's all of 4'9" tall!). I love this guitar duo.(pro player here, fwiw...). They have different styles which are nevertheless perfectly complimentary. Miyako (the dark-haired one) has said "Midori is faster and more technical than I am," but that's like saying a Koenigsegg is faster and more technical than a Ferrari. They both have mad chops and great feel. Miyako now has her own Dean signature model.

I've never been into Power Metal, and the only real NWOBHM bands I liked were Motorhead and Girlschool. Even Thrash wasn't really my thing, although I did like some of it in small doses. That's the stuff Lovebites are most influenced by, and when I discovered them (the song was Shadowmaker), I thought they were really good, but never thought they'd become my favourite band or anything just because I'm not really a metal guy, I'm more into hard rock and punk-ish sort of stuff, and lo and behold Lovebites became my favourite band. LMAO....they are so much better than I will ever be...fret not there are few anywhere than can match the M & M show especially LIVE and at these speeds. If you thought this was dope...out of their 50+ songs since 2017 this doesn't sniff the top 10, so get ready for a ride. Power, Speed, Thrash, Rock, Prog, Ballads and classical piano are all in their catalog (forget genre labels these women are so insanely talented they can play anything they want). They chase flawless perfection in everything they do and especially LIVE where one missed note in a 2 hour set eats at them. To get a feel try this range of songs: Scream for Me (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8mnntOZzOCyl2w.html) Fun song for the band and a guitar clinic at the same time. Swan Song with piano intro (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaiYp9SYzr6pcWg.html) Classical piano and metal done to perfection by this band LIVE. Set the World on Fire (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5-qpqtnzq3DZpc.html) Thrash played the way only Lovebites can LIVE this band is an experience, world class musicians at every position but they are tight and always in sync despite limited touring. Best new metal band per Hammer 2018 and 1st all female Japanese metal band to appear at Wacken Open Air (Mecca of Metal-over 100+ metal bands from around the world play over 3/4 days).

@@SteveOGRock may not quite be you cup of Tea as they tend to have lighter (Vocally) Melodic Choruses (some call it poppy(not me))but still well worth the exploration try Rinne (MV) or Manners & Black Hole (Live) for a bit of Variety.
