Notice how in Jam Buds, the song is more basic, but the harmony between Steven and Connie is perfect, while this song is more initially interesting, but the harmony between Pearl and Connie is intentionally awkward. This is because the mentality of Connie’s bond with Steven is healthier than the one Pearl is trying to project onto her.

"deep down, you know, you weren't built for fighting" the person singing that line, Pearl, is, well, a pearl, a type of being in the lore who is made as a simple maidservant, quite literally not built for fighting. shes projecting a lot in the song but that line is the biggest point

A really interesting part of Steven universe which I LOVE is that every character has their own instrument motif. So pearls is a piano, connie's is a violin, Steven is an 8bit track they all have their instrument. All of pearl's pieces are heavy piano pieces. It's a little part of the show that I'm obsessed with!!

The person Pearl is talking about Steven's mom Rose who died when Steven was born. Pearl was in love with Rose but Rose fell in love with Steven's dad Greg instead.

It is a shame that the songs tend to be short but the episodes are only about 10 minutes long so they kinda have to be. Imagine a 5 minute version of do it for her though, it'd be frickin awesome!

Pearl = piano/classical Garnet = bass/electro (I think) Amethyst = drums/rock Steven = GameBoy! (yes, some of the music in the show was made on it)/chiptune

"Deep down you know You weren't built for fighting" Pearl didn't talk about Connie, she talk about *herself* :') as first, at the homeland of all gems- Pearl was created to entertain gems in higher class (singing, dancing- whatever) but she want to be more then that, she want to help Rose... so she started to pick a sword and learning to fight

Yes, Pearl is teaching Connie (The human girl) how to sword fight so that in the future when the time comes she can be there and fight along side him. Which Steven is happy and supportive about. Notice how the song goes on Steven grows uncomfortable (someone in earlier comments said this), shown in a brief scene where she’s running through the battlefield by herself then when she sees Rose in danger she jumps in - ultimately throwing herself head first into danger and sacrificing herself. This is what she is teaching Connie to do thus “you do it for her as is to say you do it for him.” If you haven’t found out already it is quite obvious that Pearl had a strong attachment to Rose to the point she would sacrifice herself. Despite sacrificing herself as long as her gem was not harmed in anyway she would be able to comeback and fight again. But you see Connie can’t do that, she’s a human. And once something happens to her it’s permanent. Thus is why Steven was growing uncomfortable and ultimately doesn’t want Connie to be his knight and sacrifice herself because he might lose his first real best friend. Having already lost his mother he doesn’t want to lose her too. All these are things you learn as you watch the episodes. It’s honestly a really great series despite being a cartoon. It’s always nice to see that people from all ages appreciate the work. Some songs I recommend: True Kinda Love(Steven Universe), Familiar(Steven Universe), Full Disclosure(Steven Universe- would recommend to watch to get another idea of what I was talking about when I said Steven doesn’t want Connies life to be filled with her getting hurt.), Phoenix(Haikyuu), Inferno(Fire Force) [ both are good in sub and dubbed version - I recommend the anime(s) ]

It is cool that Connie's prepared to kick ass for Steven, but you'll notice as the song progresses that as Connie goes more and more overboard with the self-sacrifice idea, Steven gets more and more uncomfortable. A while ago I learned about each main character of SU having their own instrument. Pearl has piano, Connie has violin. Now that I know that, I can really hear how it's only piano - until Connie starts fighting, and violin is added in! So cool

Here's a detail that usually goes overlooked: Connie's (the one in training) signature instrument is the violin, hence it playing in this song. Pearl's (the teacher) is piano. Toward the end of the song, the violin starts sounding more like the piano, like how Pearl is pushing her mentality onto Connie. Also, one of the lyrics -- "With my *short* existence-" "Good." -- is so often overlooked, but shows that the idea of obsessive self-sacrificing is starting to become normal to Connie.

Heck yeah! This is one of my favorite SU songs, right after Peace and Love on the Planet Earth. Love what you do!

Love the way I’ve seen two people react to this song now and neither of them have realised the true tone of the song that being that Connie’s ready to throw her life away like she doesn’t matter and only Steven does which is something Steven doesn’t want because he cares for Connie and that’s why he looks so surprised in the song

The soundtrack of this show is awesome and so are the characters ,the plot and the manu messages of the show it is one of the best I've ever seen so far and I know the show ended last year March but it's still a nice experience to watch the show even for new comers.

This song is honestly really tragic to me. Pearl (the mentor) is projecting her borderline suicidal devotion to Rose (the woman in the “flashback” they watched, the one she jumped in front of) on that girl she’s teaching how to fight. The “you’ll do it for her” is sort of her tongue slipping about how SHE did it for Rose.

pearl’s associated instrument is the piano, with connie’s being the violin. as the song progresses, the violin matches the piano more and more, just as connie begins to match pearl more and more.

what's so interesting about this song is that it's giving Pearl a LOT of depth (it might even be a good first introduction for the character), as it show almost all the sides of Pearl. Her qualities and her weaknesses are in beautiful display, and this is why it's one of my favourite songs from steven universe.

The context is pearl (the taller gem) fought wars for the the person she loved (“her”) and now that she teaching Connie (the human girl) to fight she’s trying her best to teach her but she can’t help but feel what she felt while fight for rose (“her”) so she’s teaching Connie sort of inapt ways of fight and to sacrifice herself for the one she cares about, Steven (the person sitting) Thus the “You’ll do it for her, that is to say you’ll do it for him” That’s pearl messing up the subject of the song and correcting herself And at the end “You’d to it for her, and now you say you’ll do it for him” Is kind of pearl excepting that rose is gone and realizing she needs to protect Steven now (Steven being rose’s son)

What happens with the piano and pearl is that each gem has a style of music according to its gem and personalities (that can be seen in its dances of fuction) such as pearl is correct, educated and agile, that is why it has as a characteristic instrument the piano :3

Yes, Do It For Her is the same person she was referring to in It’s Over Isn’t It? Literally all her life up to Steven was dedicated to this single person, and this show for her is all the aftermath of that

You should also do "Talk to Eachother" from the episode: Mr. Greg. It's kind of the end point, where this is the starting point, and "it's over, Isn't it?" is sort of the dramatic climax. At least IMO.

I’d recommend ”Strong in the Real way” “Haven’t you noticed I’m a star” or “Steven and the Stevens” they’re both short underrated but good ones

It's made clearer in the episode, but when Pearl says "do it for her" she's referring to how she protected Rose Quartz, Stephen's mom. When she says "do it for him" she's encouraging Connie to protect Steven in the same way. However, it's not clear how intentional it is when she says "her" instead of "him." In the beginning and end, she seemingly does it on purpose, but at several points in the middle it feels accidental and she corrects herself, even looking embarrassed. These little bits are used to great effect in the episode. Pearl probably has my favorite character arc in the show.

I’d absolutely recommend Love Like You. It’s actually an end credits song so it’s not in any specific scene but I think it’s a beautiful song AND it is longer!

The line "do it for her that is to say do it for him" shows that Pearl is projecting her feelings for Rose on Connie. Pearl fought and risked her life for Rose because she loves her and since Steven kind of is Rose as well, she tries to get Connie to do the same for him, always mixing up "do it for her" (what she did) with "do it for him" (what Connie should do) In the end of the episode Pearl even yells out to Steven "just let me do this for You, Rose!" and then finally realized what she did...

yes, pearl was made to serve someone else so she still feels her life is worth sacrificing over herself no matter what. so she is teaching connie that.

To be fair, the Steven Universe episodes are very short - total runtime for the majority of episodes is about 11 minutes. From a storytelling perspective this means two things: 1. All songs need to move the story along in some way and 2. Anything longer than about a minute or two risks taking up valuable time. If you think about three act structure for an 11 min ep, that’s going to be about 2 min for the beginning/exposition, 3 minutes for the middle, and 3 minutes to wrap it up. That doesn’t leave a ton of room for anything that doesn’t move the episode along, let alone a song longer than about 2 min. Would love to to see you react to the show someday! Sorry for the long comment, I’m just very passionate about Steven Universe.

There's really a lot that could be unpacked in a song like this one. Pearl's fanatical behaviour, Connie slowly becoming more reckless, beat up, and continuing despite injuries, and Steven slowly becoming more disillusioned throughout the song out of concern for Connie's behaviour and willingness to sacrifice her life. And that's just the story side of it.

Something I noticed that is prevalent in a lot of the songs. Each character has their own sort of instrument that plays in their songs or in duets. For Pearl (The Mentor) it’s a piano, it starts off strong and is near a constant presence throughout the song, however, when Connie joins the song, a violin plays (which is unique to her since she is seen playing the instrument in the show). However, I noticed that during the parts where Pearl is becoming more intense and saying things like Connie should be “prepared to die” the violin is not as strong, maybe representing her slow loss of individuality as a person and conforming to Pearl’s negative mindset of “being loyal to the death”. Something fun to think about I guess.

Some people in the comments would like this to be darker but as someone who isn't even in the fandom it's perfect. Even though it's not overly obvious you can hear that there is something wrong, even the piano itself, though that might sound weird. As an overall music recommendation, I'd suggest anything from Persona 5, they are all pretty amazing, though if you're looking for any particular order to listen to them in, I'd suggest Wake up, Get up, Get out there > Colors Flying High > Last Surprise > Take Over > Life Will Change > Rivers in the Desert > I Believe > Throw Away Your Mask > Our Light. (Last Surprise and Take Over are the battle themes and don't really need to be listened to in that order, just figured I'd put them there). Taken all in order it outlines a single continuous narrative (Also I Believe and Throw Away Your Mask are two sides to the same conversation, I believe is from Your characters viewpoint, and TAYM is from the opposing viewpoint, thought I'd throw that out there).

There's a tonne of background tracks you can react to, maybe check out fusion themes, starting with amethyst and pearls fusion into opal.
