⚡ / 🔴 🌙 As long as it's not rudely expressed, I'm not going to downvote someone for an honest opinion. Although I can't really give you an upvote either. IMO, you should either get out of your head enough to feel the emotion in this beautiful song, or appreciate it on its technical merits if you're going to try and just be analytical. You seem to be in some weird in-between place. I can understand disliking guitar solos if they are some indulgent twiddling that is thrown into a song just so the guitarist can show off. That's not what's happening with the guitar duet in this song. There's a reason there are two guitar "voices". I'm curious what kind of metal groups or songs you are actually in to. Knowing that might help you get some suggestions that could resonate better.

Good reaction - you absolutely do not deserve the downvotes, I don't understand where they have come from. You gave an honest opinion, you were not at all disrespectful, it just isn't your thing and that should be absolutely fine. I can understand your mixed feelings and how this song (or maybe the old style speed/power metal vibes it has) are not your thing. I can only guess that those for whom this is their favourite song (and performance) disagree - that does not merit a downvote. You explained your choice of song for your first reaction and it was very sound logic, I think any comments about that were basically surprise as it is an unusual first song to hear - there is no wrong choice. BABYMETAL will always incorporate a lot of theatre in all their songs, that is what they do. They put on a show. As for over-engineering ... every song is crafted, some take years before they feel they are ready to be released to the public and performed, but I believe a lot of that has to do with the fact they always strive to give the best quality and the best performance because they respect their audience. Songs I would suggest for you for your next reaction - 'Tales of the Destinies' (the live version is not on KZfaq and that would be by far the best version to see, but the studio audio version is available), 'Shine' (maybe a little too like 'The One' and something dissimilar to give you a broader view may be better at this stage), 'Syncopation', 'Shanti Shanti Shanti' (to give you more idea of how diverse they can be), 'Karate', 'From Dusk Till Dawn' (only fan cams exist so maybe the studio audio version would be best), 'Brand New Day' (possibly one of their songs furthest from the more commonly recognised metal sensibilities) and my own preferred go to with recommendations as I think if there is one song that comes closest to best representing BABYMETAL - 'Megitsune'.

I don't think you deserve the downvotes. Thanks for the honesty. This is one of their better songs and a pretty good performance of it. You probably don't like Babymetal it's not for everybody. I like how well written their songs are. :) I don't even mind one bit if someone watches a good Babymetal video and doesn't like it. It's when they watch a bad one that it's annoying. Imagine it's your favorite band and someone watches your least favorite song from them and says that they're bad. :) But remember downvotes are as good as upvotes for the youtube formula. They're both 'engagement'. This was 2014 and Su was only 16 years old and the live band had only recently become full time. So they do get quite a bit better technically. But this in my opinion is plenty good enough. You probably don't like them :)

WTF IS THIS LIKE/DISLIKE RATIO? I thought you were gonna hate on them, but nope. What do you guys expect? Everyone to fall in love with the band at first sight? Is that what happened when we were getting into them? The guy gave his honest opinion, was fair and didn't trash the group. No need for this. As for your opinion, I didn't really get what you meant by overprocessed or overthought and how that relates to you not liking it as much (I guess that's why you wanna give it time). Their songs are *very* well thought out, and take a long time to make. Some are simpler and strightforward with the melodies and instrumentation and some are more complex. Now I almost don't wanna see a reaction to 'Tales of the Destinies' yet cause it's one of their most complex songs. If you meant that it's literally overprocessed with the mixing and all, we can't help you. They try their best to create a good sound when live. I also don't get the dislike of guitar solos. Sounds to me like it's just a pet peeve, but I don't know enough about you to be sure. I'm gonna recommend 'Megitsune' (OFFICIAL). It's one of the most beloved tracks by fans, and I think you'll enjoy it. The song is very interesting to break down. It's going back to 3 vocalists/dancers like most of their songs, while Akatsuki, as you can see, was a Su-metal solo.

Nice reaction. I appreciate the honesty. Usually the first two songs that give somewhat wtf moment are Gimme Chocolate and KARATE. Between the two, since you mentioned you're not a fan of guitar solos, i'd suggest KARATE, the more djenty one. I agree when you said it's fun. Fun is the words i'm also getting from them, and that's also what saved me from a music void i'm having the past couple years. Turned out i was looking for the fun in music and when i found them in metal form i was feeling blessed, it was in Babymetal. But here it is, at the end of the day the fan (or me at least) are only there for the mix that Babymetal's doing. They're not the hardest, or heaviest, their vocals are different. But the mix it is fresh. You're only gonna get the feelings if you open yourself first for something fresh. But yeah it might be hard to grasp if you're not a fan of somewhat a vast genre of metal, since they kinda doing so many sub-genres of metal. I wasn't too myself but i kinda open my mind after those two songs get me hooked and i'm starting to listen and accept prog, thrash, and whatever they try doing. It's all simply because the production are so good, the Su vocal mixed finely with metal instruments behind her, the instruments players are to look/hear, the tone of the music, the girls/ladies that got something to give through their dance moves. I'm liking all of these first before i am liking and accepting the sub-genres in each them songs. So yeah man, sorry to say, but if you're not open enough or maybe in other words "elitist" that's when you know you're not ready for Babymetal. But i'm hoping that you do and that you can enjoy Babymetal like i do.

Don't mind the people who expect all reactors to instantly love everything they listen to and downvote the rest, for me that kind of behavior just makes the reactor look suspicious... There's a lot of us who prefer honest reactions as long as they are respectful, which seems to be the case. Staying curious is a good sign too. Personally I think I can understand where your doubts are coming from. For most of us the fact that everything around BABYMETAL (music, dance, production, etc...) is meticulously planned and polished to the slightest detail is a pro, but I can see how it can be a con if you like more organic stuff. In the end it's obvious that not everyone has the same taste, so if it doesn't click to you it's fine, you don't need to justify yourself. Just keep checking performances with an open mind and maybe one day you'll find one that will do the trick. That's a good thing that BABYMETAL has, every song is different and maybe your favorite is just waiting one click away.

I really appreciate your honest reaction and I don't get the downvotes reason. Really, guys? This song is my personal favorite and I consider this particular performance as "perfection". My three most loved things in (metal) music are (probably not in this order): double bass drumming, dueling and duet guitar solos and the clear, pure and penetrating Su's vocals. I usually like weird things and I never expect other people like the same... but BABYMETAL has a wide range regarding styles, sub-genres, lyrics, etc. so I'm sure we will find The ONE (pun intended haha...) that suits you. About the over-engineered thing, Koba (their producer) is a... how to say this... a perfection enthusiast :) "Megitsune" was send like 43 times back and forth to the songwriter, so we are pretty sure that it's technically perfect LOL. At this point, I have been thinking about what to suggest you and I believe that "YAVA!" could be a good option. Hope to see you soon!

I appreciate the honest and thoughtful reaction. Thumbs up from me. Though this is my favorite Babymetal song, all the downvotes to this reaction are silly and childish. He was respectful and quite measured in his thoughts without rushing to judgment. This type of reaction is infinitely better than the reactors who lavash false praise on everything they hear or the ones that jump around like fools. Tales of the Destinies would probably be best suited to your liking but if you want a more rounded taste of Babymetal perhaps try Megitsune (I’d would have suggested Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro but you don’t like guitar solos)

Thanks for doing this reaction. This song was in part inspired by X-Japan, who are one of the biggest rock/metal bands in Japan. If not most famous. Visual kei pioneers. Not all songs take direct inspiration from bands/songs, but this has a clear nod to a song. The X-Japan song Kurenai (1989) can be interpreted in Japanese as crimson moon. And Akatsuki as red moon. You aren't that much interested in the guitar solos, yeah, this song might not be the best choice for your second reaction. Because on the metal side of things this song is very much about the guitars and drums. On the singing side we have Suzuka/Su-metal at 16 years in this show. A song first performed some 2 years earlier. Honest reaction is the only thing we ask for !

First of all: what's with the downvotes. Didn't really see such a bad ratio before if somebody was honest and respectful. Well, every PR is good PR? What you said makes a lot of sense to me and either it's something you like or you don't, there's nothing wrong with that. I'm usually someone who also enjoys less editing and "being perfect" in live performances and even though it's something I wish BABYMETAL and Japanese Bands in general would be a little bit more lenient with, I can understand that there's a bit of a cultural aspect involved aswell. If you don't like how polished and "perfect" the sound and performance is, I don't think Japanese bands are something you'd really enjoy. At least not the commercially more or less successful ones. That's one of the things Japanese engineers/producers (or even people in general) are known for and always try to accomplish: do everything as "perfect" as it gets. It's the same with Lovebites, Band-Maid, Unlucky Morpheus, One OK Rock, etc etc etc. They will always sound as polished as it gets on their DVDs and everything that's for sale.
@Jordan-Ramses

I think Babymetal live performances in the last year or so are too produced. Before that was a good balance. I think the Five Fox Festival where it the one for men only was their best sounding pro shot. Their heaviest show IMO. But the DVDs are for a mass audience so they're probably right to do so. That is probably what most normies like. Be cool if it was like peanut butter and they had a chunky or smooth versions.
@ANDOR-
@ANDOR- 3 жыл бұрын
That would be really nice with the two versions. And I agree about the production of the newer shows, but there's a few things I don't like about those, the placement and lack of focus on the band for example. I really like the Fox Festival for the women. I think that was the best crowd they ever had, or at least the crowd was really well mixed into the production. But the sound mix in all of the Fox Festivals wasn't as refined which I really liked.

Someone also recommended *Tales of the Destinies,* you will probably like that piece too, but in KZfaq we have only the audio. Soon you will also have to try *Megitsune,* it's the song that has appeared more times on their setlists and it might be their consensuated best. Hope this helps, thanks for the video.

We have a reactor that is providing his honest opinion, he listened to the whole song, praised SU's voice, liked certain parts, not so much others, but is still willing to give BM other listen. As always I think that was an incredibly fair and balanced take on a track that clearly didn't impact you in the way people who suggested the track might have hoped. Whilst I think BM certainly are deserving of the status they now hold and their injection into the realm of rock/metal is a much needed one, I'm wary of the manner in which they tend to get hyped up across the KZfaq reaction community. The unfortunate truth is that it's all too easy for many reactors to fall into the trap of blurring the lines between genuine appreciation for BM and being all too aware of the numbers game associated with their popularity - something illustrated by the rapid number of downvotes your reaction already has. I'm curious what your take would be on some of the other Japanese rock/metal groups who I find more inventive, such as Tricot, Band-Maid, DOLL$BOXX and Bridear. Not taking anything away from BM, Su-metal is a great vocalist and I do enjoy some of their stuff, but I think you were spot on with the over-engineered comment. Appreciate the honest reaction!
@Jordan-Ramses
@Jordan-Ramses 3 жыл бұрын
I agree completely with your first paragraph and i disagree entirely with your second. There are a lot of good things you could say about Band-maid but 'inventive' is not one of them. And to compare that to Babymetal? Are you high? Band-maid looks hot in their outfits and plays their instruments very competently but all their songs sound the same.
@tenmilesfm
@tenmilesfm 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jordan-Ramses Am I high? No, unfortunately not tonight. I'm not going to get involved in a discussion around the relative merits of of BM vs Band-Maid. You clearly prefer BabyMetal and that's groovy and I encourage you to not be ashamed of that fact. But to pass a comment like 'looks hot in their outfits' as if that's some sort of indication of what makes them popular is disappointingly short-sighted. Also, inventive and innovative are not the same thing. BabyMetal I would certainly classify as innovative. And you're well within your right to balk at the notion of Band-Maid being inventive, if you find the music too samey fair enough. I find their approach to song-writing, especially when it comes to the rather restrictive rock genre, refreshing and full of surprises, but hey that's just my personal opinion.

It's very refreshing with honest reaction videos, instead of all that pandering to the fanbase you see on other channels. The conceit, of course, is that it takes no more than three songs to convert anyone into a Babymetal fan. Why not try to prove that wrong? :-) I will say that "The One" was an unfortunate introduction to this band, though. It isn't really all that great on musical merit alone, but does seem to hit an emotional chord with many fans, as it is written specifically for them. As you are not a fan (yet), I can see why it made little impression on you. Even I often skip it in my playlist, to be perfectly honest. Recommending that you listen to "Akatsuki" made much more sense, even if it turned out the be the wrong song for your personal tastes. Who knew that there were people who didn't like dual guitar solos? But now that we know, we will avoid recommending songs with prominent guitar solos, any of the Su solo performances ("Amore", "No Rain, No Rainbow"), or "Rondo of Nightmare" with the "Mischief of the Gods" intro, as this has both of those things. As you've mentioned an interest in progressive music, then the obvious choice is of course "Tales of the Destinies", which I'm pretty sure you have already settled on for your next song. While there are progressive elements in many Babymetal tracks, that one is by far the most obvious one. It's also slightly ironic, as it was originally the first half of a longer track, which transitioned into the very "The One" you've already listened to :-). Although "Tales of the Destinies" has been preformed live exactly once, the recordings of this are quickly taken down from KZfaq. So I guess you will have to listen to the studio version. Which is fine. We fans just like to point out that they _can_ actually perform even that complex piece live :-) And talking about live performances, that is another thing you will probably hear a lot: make sure to review the live performances whenever possible, as the shows are generally spectacular, the musical and vocal talents are made more obvious, and the girls' stage presence and crowd interaction is quite impressive. But in your case, this might not be the way to go. I'm worried that you might bump against how meticulously choreographed and theatrical everything is. Even the massively popular "Road of Resistance" might not work well on you, as it could be regarded as very staged and calculated in its crowd interaction. Perhaps we should try to recommend you a music video instead? As a process of acclimatization, if you like. So, maybe after "Tales of the Destinies", we should suggest a music video of one of their less typical songs, to see if they are more up your alley? Because you are not wrong when you said that they have a very diverse catalogue. I can't think of many other bands that are so varied, and still maintain such a high average standard. I know many people have been converted by the more recent videos for "BxMxC" or "Pa Pa Ya", which are more hip-hop oriented, with trap metal and EDM vibes. Would that work on you? Or should we go in the complete opposite direction, and recommend the more quintessential Babymetal songs, like "Megitsune" and "Headbanger"? They certainly are fan favorites, capture the spirit of Babymetal very well, and are both very, very different from the two "boring" (relatively speaking) songs that you have listened to so far. Personally, I think it might be too soon for these. They are not as far out as say "Gimme Chocolate", but the step is still pretty big. They will end up being two of your favorite songs eventually, you mark my words, but you got off to a bad start, so your path might be slightly longer than it has been for other fans...

I think there is something in their catalogue that anyone could enjoy. I LOVE the band and many of their songs but there are others that are VERY popular I've never got into as much for those same reasons. Gimmie Chocolate or Road of Resistance, for example, have resonated with my tastes. If you aren't that big into guitar solo's or Akatsuki I would really recommend 'Road of Resistance' to you. Japanese music tends to be very "polished" because of cultural aspects where they always aim to do everything perfectly. But, you're not wrong about the part where it can be off-putting for some people when it's too polished. And you as a musician have your own preference in music. From what I'm understanding, you prefer a more raw side of music rather than those well-engineered types. And regarding solos, that's fine if you don't like them. I mean, there's metal genres that don't necessarily employ technical and amazing solos. But nevertheless, we the fans appreciate the honesty and even Su-metal, the lead singer, agrees not everyone will like their music. Probably some ppl want to ruin BM reactions :( Just to make clear this is one of my favorite BABYMETAL songs and I too felt quite sad when he didn't like it but thats his choice I guess... Well of you don't like this style maybe tell is what you do listen to? If prog is ur thing not many songs are prog (yet?) So not much to offer...

Nice reaction & analysis and thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Comment area of reaction video is provided to exchange various opinions, either like or dislike. So downvote is not understandable unless a uploaded video is for defamation and so on. Although I do not know what kind of music you like or can expand your musical horizons, BABYMETAL is so versatile that some of their songs have hooks to attract your attention. How about BxMxC official video recently released ?

Really thoughtful analysis. One theory: this is a live performance, but it's shot in a way that makes it almost look like there's no audience, which could result in an oddly sterile feeling if you haven't seen more of their live performances. I see some Road of Resistance recommendations, but you've watched two of their more serious performances so far and as much as I adore RoR, I don't think it will help give new perspective as well as something that shows off Babymetal's more playful side. Maybe "Catch Me if You Can". Here's a performance from 2013 at the Legend of 1997 concert kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qq6bpLaLtq6-YY0.html

I will say "over thought" and "over engineered" is a weird reason to not like something IMO. To me, that's like saying, "it's too good. I don't like it." I understand the appreciation of grunge music that is more natural and less thought out, but I don't know why people can't appreciate both. They're different styles. Some people don't like Babymetal because it's a label produced "band" (if labels even really matter), but to me it's whatever. I like something because it's good, not because a person put a lot of hard work into it. I mean, I appreciate the effort of bands that do put a lot of personal hard work into it, but their work ethic is not the same as their music. That basically suggests that we should like a band because they put in a lot of effort even though they produce not so enjoyable music just because they worked hard. To me that's silly. If anything, I try to enjoy Babymetal as a product of entertainment to consume. I find thinking of Babymetal in this way is easier to get past the cognitive dissonance. "Band" or "not a band" is a vain argument that only serves to distract from the experience.

I think it might help if you listened to this song one or two more times. The vocal melodies are quite complex in parts (which I think is relative common in Japanese music compared to most Western "Pop" (in a broader sense) music). Personally, I consider Akatsuki a very perfect track, as it has so many elements that I like in Metal music and in BABYMETAL in particular, and all of them are on a very high level (vocal melodies, guitar solos, changes of pace, stage presence...) As you have mentioned, BABYMETAL's spectrum is pretty wide, but if I had to name a song that sums them up best, I would choose "Megitsune". Perhaps you'd like to give that one a try: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbFjgbCLpruvd6s.html

If you like DragonForce at all, check out Road to Resistance (they helped write that song). Some songs I like a lot are PA PA YA, Megitsune, YAVA, Syncopation, Karate and Distortion. (But I like most of their songs.) I hope you give them a few more tries. I appreciate your honesty and agree that personal taste in music can vary greatly.

Hmm... Akatsuki usually gets recommended way later once the reactor has gotten used to Babymetal a bit. Don't get why they recced it to you now. It's a great song, but I wouldn't have recced it as a way to convince you to give them another try. My rec would have been Megitsune or Headbangeeeeer!! Perhaps even Distortion I have a feeling might be more your thing. Or Babymetal is just not for you, which would be completely fine. It's great that you're giving them a chance regardless! My brothers won't even listen to one song of them let alone two or three. People that hate on you for being honest secretly wish they had the guts to openly say their opinion like that on the internet, instead of being keyboard warriors.

One of the the interesting things about Babymetal is it can take half a dozen or more songs to really get a feel for them. Arguably even more given how young they where when they started. So not only do you have to have to watch them mature as performers and personalities. There’s also a huge variety of musical styles to take in. Don’t worry about any down votes. But do try and cover a range of material including their latest stuff. It can be hard to find recent live performances that don’t get blocked by KZfaq. Hence so many compilations.

I think..hmm..unfinished version of this one would suit you better? I like it more, this song doesnt seem to need all those instruments. And yes, over-engineering may be right, in this version at least. And as said, maybe you should've tried Megitsune or Road of Resistance before this..or some of the others, difficult to say what clicks best on each person. Bill and Ted? Awesome movie about the growth of two kids into the best musicians in the world? Good comparison in there....

I would check out Megitsune, song is quintessential Babymetal. . I think everything you said is fair, and you don't deserve the down votes. This song is more or less an homage to Kurenai from X-Japan. Headbanger, one of the live versions, Karate, MV or Download Festival, and Starlight are other good choices. Both the songs you have chosen so far do not show the three girls on stage together so you're not getting a good impression so far, and yes they are theatrical.

Im not huge fun of Babymetal ballad... There are good but not enough for me. I realy like Yava, Headbanger, Distorshion, PA PA YA and other songs like this. More aggressive or more funny. serious songs like Akatsuki, Amore or the One for me is a little bit boring.

Have you never seen a negative movie review? What's the difference? Should negative movie reviews not exist? The thing is, I didn't even dislike it. It seems people are too used to effusive reactors gushing over the music. I started listening to the likes of Dream Theater in 96, I've heard technical proficiency before, it doesn't impress me in and of itself.

Overthought songs: - Akatsuki - Tales of the Destinies - Headbanger - Road of Resistance - Amore Not overthought: - Doki Doki Morning - Catch Me If You Can - Iine - Oh Majinai - Gimme Chocolate Yea they go the whole spectrum. For some people, Babymetal can be difficult to process . The key is to listen and watch without any biases. Forget about what you think it should sound like. Babymetal sounds like Babymetal, period. The more you try to analyze it the more confused you'll get. Just listen to it and enjoy the ride. I think Akatsuki is one of their best songs but I certainly see no reason to downvote. It makes me wonder if you didn't get a couple of them early then others came along and assumed it was a bad review so just downvoted and left without bothering to watch.

if you try to put Babymetal in your own preferred box you will not find one of their songs fit. they have created new genre in Metal , if you created " new genre " of music then basically you created new " box " that doesn't fit to other. with Babymetal one of the main rules is Expect the Unexpected.

i think you should move on from bm imho. if there is nothing to hook you in THIS song, then they are not for you. also all their song are over produced and structured and that's what gives them just a huge wall of sound, even live!! also, as a musician who doesn't like guitar solo's, i'd say just move on from the metal genre altogether.
