I just realized that of all the interviews I have seen with Paul, I have never once heard him use a swear word or say a bad word about anyone...what a kind soul he is...

He has used stronger language before...though usually in the context of telling a story (i.e. the Snickers and Grape Soda story) and maybe the Everybody Use Your G. D. Turn Signal song could count. But yeah...he's not foul-mouthed, in interviews as a general rule at least. It's actually refreshing. And also good practice if you're ever in the situation of being interviewed in a setting that doesn't allow it (television etc....). And you're right about Paul never speaking bad of anyone. He's one of if not the most respectful musician I know of...and his enthusiasm for music is catching!

Hey guys, big Gilbert and Transatlantic fan here! I think Angus is playing a G note but bending it sharp with a blues bend on the E string, whilst the bass copies the fret the note is on but without the blues bend.

Great interaction! Two things. At one point Paul mentions learning a song in different keys; I've seen some Pat Metheny interviews recently where he said he'll learn songs in all 12 keys. So that's solid advice. Second thing is later Paul talks about being able to play a melody on a kazoo first take, no problems. Frank Zappa said, "If you can say it you can play it" and that really stuck with me as a writer. One last important bit of knowledge I'd like to pass on. I once met an iconic jazz pioneer, no names mentioned but this guy is a legend, and he told me something very important, something that greatly improved my life to this day and maybe it will help you. He looked me straight in the eye and said, "Boy, get me some heroin."

Paul wearing that engineer's cap reminds me of when I was really young, my uncle Norton Buffalo used to wear one of those all the time and Paul totally reminds me of him anyway. Norton was an incredible harmonica player, he played with all kinds of great musicians back in the day like Steve Miller, I really miss that guy he was so cool!

Watching Neal scream Oh, Darlin' solidified my belief that Neal was the GOAT. That fret slide in Green Tinted 60's Mind that Paul pulled off in Mr. Big made me a fan of his back in that day. Learning he is a fan of Rundgren /Utopia and Elton. wow. Just wow. Almost prerequisites for any musician worth his ilk. When these two got together in YMC with Portnoy of course, lest we forget the great drumming in Custard, was just icing on the cake. PG is a great human. Awesome interview.

Speaking of bad chords in songs, how about the chorus of I'll Wait by VH. The keyboard plays a D sus, D major while the vocals sing d minor. Kind of has that same effect as "steel horse I ride" in Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive. Kind of funny and you wonder if they just didn't notice or what.

Here is my "good mistake". Before I could really play guitar I found a Beatles chord book and was using it to learn. And on a bunch of songs they kept throwing in this A11 chord. It made no sense at all to me. Years later I learned that John's rhythm style would often have him keep strumming between chord transitions. He would just hit all the open strings for a 16th before moving to the next chord. EG All My Loving. Well guess what chord all the open strings form. And like Paul's examples, it does not make sense musically but if you leave it out of your playing on those tunes, it misses.
