This video is for the SOLO working musician considering buying a Bose S1 Pro. I've included some live footage of one of my gigs and I've tried my best to accurately describe my experience with it. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Great review 👍🏻 I love my Bose S1 Pro and I also using it without the Tonematch switch on. I found the same thing as you, made my voice and guitar sound thin and lacklustre. Right now it’s all I really need. For most gigging venues you’d go from the “line out” into the house PA anyway, making this the perfect monitor.

I use two S1’s which I designed an adapter to align them vertically (yes, true) so I basically shade the lower one for near-field listeners (and monitor…it’s on a stand over my right shoulder) and shade the top one a bit hotter for distant listeners. I feed an Aux send (post) on my mixer to a Bose Sub1 for a bit of guitar/vox and foot percussion. The system performs fantastic. I get tons of positive comments from patrons. I can supply power to Sub1 and other gear with portable Jackery AC supply for a totally off-grid and powerful system for up to 100-150 people. A single S1 is great to have for weddings and even small outdoor parties. No other battery powered PA in this size can compete. Cheers

Hello I hope you could help me. I’m a singer and I have two Bose s1 pros which I use for guys. I feel like something is missing from the sound maybe some base. I use a Yamaha mixer. I read your comment and you say you have a Bose sub1 can I ask what that is and what it is used for? I think I need to ad to my set up to give it a better sound 😀

I’m with you on all of this. It does what it does brilliantly though. I have a pair and use them for either small family garden parties and camping or their primary use case is as foldback monitors with a pair of Bose L1 Pro 8s. When using them as foldbacks, I roll the bottom end off so as they don’t bottom out, and then they really project well, and the L1s really fill the low end in more than adequately (the L1 pro series doesn’t lack in low or top end at all, and I genuinely think they’re the best thing Bose have made to date in terms of sound quality). The great advantage of using the S1 pro as a foldback is the reduction in power cables all over the stage and the small footprint.

You say not enough base I thought it was fine. It's light and I'm thankful not to lug around my 40lb powered monitor and put up on a pole. When I play with full band it's my monitor.

Subbed you just now, after watching this - the third video by you - today. The other 2 were about the Evox Jmix8, which I am kinda interested in trying. Love your way of going through the pros and cons, and especially how you show us how things actually sound in live settings. Most reviewers don‘t manage to convey that, for they play stock music (from their phones or whatever) in showrooms or living rooms, and often the music they use is crap for judging how natural a system sounds. So I much appreciate your more musician-friendly approach. And now your video on the Bose S1 Pro cinches my feeling that your use scenarios and sound preferences are a very close match to mine. I know this because I have (and love!) the Bose S1 Pro, and would have said exactly what you did about it. Adding to that for whomever‘s interested: I‘ve tried about 15 acoustic amps over the years, and owned about 9, among which are an ancient AER Acousticube (too analytical and cold, i.e. not warm enough, esp. not for my vocals), a Roland BA-330 (too sharp in the treble, and sound break-up when driven with loud vocals, i.e. preamps without sufficient headroom; also, some kind of limiters or comb filters cutting sound fidelity to save the woofers from too much energy, I suppose), a Roland AC-33 (excellent for the wee size, but don‘t try to drive it hard or it breaks up, especially when on batteries), a Roland Cube Street Ex (also seems to suffer from selective frequency filtering to keep the speakers from being overdriven, leading to less-the-warm and less-than-full bass response and a bit too much harshness and hiss; improved the unit and decided to keep it after swapping woofers for warmer, punchier ones), a Fishman Loudbox Mini (warm and full and can be driven loud, with a very pleasing internal compression I am sure is there, but the speaker lacks sparkle and upper-mid differentiation and can sound kind of dull with certain pickups/guitars unless tweaked a lot, at which point it then sounds unnatural), a Laney A-Fresco 2 (great warmth, punch and definition, but the sound dies when on batteries, even high-quality, high-powered Li-Ion ones), a Crate amp no longer made (60 Watts of very punchy sound on the floor or tilted, but with an overly sharp treble range that has to backed off carefully if you don‘t want to kill people in the front row, and too big/heavy for pole mounting) and now - finally - the Bose S1 Pro. (Oh, and we won‘t even get into the various PA speakers I‘ve also used. ;-). For my acoustic solo and busking purposes, the Bose wins hands down!!! It can fill a coffee house or street with beautifully warm, sparkling (but not sibilant), well-balanced and punchy sound, even when on batteries!!! It never breaks up when driven hard (shouty male vocal), and sounds lovely on the ballads. All of my guitars (with high-end pickups) sound great on it. And it is so incredibly compact that it‘s a breeze to take anywhere. Add in a speaker pole (got mine in a bundle from Thomann here in Germany) and the great backpack case, and you can even jack it up over people‘s heads for more throw, like in your scenario. I also love it for use as a tilted (!) floor monitor on duo gigs with a full PA. It gives me my voice the way I want/need to hear it: full and sparkly, but not boomy or sizzly so as to create feedback). And it‘s so small, I can squeeze it in at the front edge of any stage or corner of someone‘s living room or patio without it looking clunky. That said, I totally agree that it does NOT cut it for use with my Roland stomp pedal (SPD One Kick) or a manual stomp pedal or my BeatBuddy. I tried using them with my RCF M18 digital mixer ahead of the Bose, but the low-frequency response is disappointing for that kind of thing, so I just skip it. No way in hell that I‘ll ever sell the Bose! What it lacks in really low end it more than compensates for by delivering clean, punchy, powerful and non-distorting bass on acoustic guitar and vocals, and that’s exactly what I want from such an amp. I love it so much that I‘m considering using its Line Out to run a signal to a floor woofer (or the above-mentioned Crate, which has a 10-inch woofer) for a fuller-range system. Either that or maybe a column array like the Evox you also kindly tested for us. It‘s great to hear you‘ve been just as happy as I have with the Bose, which finally ticks all the boxes for me. Meanwhile, I still have that old AER Acousticube and the Roland Cube Street Ex, so if anybody reading this lives in northern Germany and is interested.... ;-). Thanks again, Stuart, for giving us your input on these things, and for sharing your warm and friendly nature with us along the way. Also really enjoy the tunes as you present them. P.S. Like you, I also much disliked the ToneMatch presets. I keep them switched off.

Hi Scott, thanks for your insight. Seems we are on the same page for that never ending quest for tone. It's a rabbit hole but personally I enjoy it keeps things interesting. Life's to short for bad sound... I use the Evox for most my gigs but recently bought the HK Polar 10. It's a rad system at a very good price. So if you do end up going column array , I'd recommend you check it out. All the best! S

Stuart Reece Bless your beautiful soul, Stuart, for turning me onto the HK Polar 10! :-) Had never heard of it before, and will definitely check it out right now. I instinctively trust your judgement on things, and really appreciate your input. Indeed, the quest for good tone can be never-ending, though I‘m willing to settle for less than perfect. Well...maybe 2% less than perfect, that is. ;-)

How does the HK Polar10 compare to Bose S1?
@scottbecker3485
@scottbecker3485 2 жыл бұрын
@@WWeiss-nv5vz Well, it‘s apples and oranges, isn‘t it? The Polar 10 is a column system with a big woofer and a wide dispersion pattern, and it doesn‘t offer battery operation or easy portability like the S1 does. Is your question more about the sound? I would be glad to share if you tell me what your specific interests are. I love both systems. I have used the S1 for small gigs and busking, and it‘s perfect for that. The Polar 10 hasn‘t been out of my home yet due to Covid, but packs a much bigger sonic punch, of course. That said, I should add I‘ve pre-ordered the brand-new JBL PRX One (arriving in 2 weeks). If it sounds as good as I think it will, I‘ll sell the Polar 10 (mint condition) in order to have the huge array of very attractive features the JBL provides.

Now, I do have a number of condenser microphones. Can I use one of them with S1 pro? I'm just trying to avoid buying a dynamic mic. I am guessing you will advise use of phantom power supply along with it. No idea how to go about doing that.

Cool review. I agree with pretty much everything you say, but would like to add a view things. 1) The Tonematch preset is designed around an Audix OM3. It really sounds nice with that mic. An OM5 is even better. The OM5 sounds almost exactly the same as the OM3, but it cuts a little more of the low frequencies that are below the vocal range of most of us. 2) If you want the low end for looping or backing tracks, add a Bose Sub1. The Sub1 has an S1 preset that sends frequencies above 150Hz to the S1. You can use the Sub1 with two S1s. The combination sounds fantastic. I agree though that for just guitar and vocals, one or two S1s alone are perfect.

And even possible to use at small venues to save us lugging the whole Bose L1 system everytime we gig. We loved the look of the S1 Pro and it seems to tick all the boxes. @stuartreeceband
@stuartreeceband 3 жыл бұрын
No I don't use a DI on the S1, I go straight in with a guitar jack. Clean electric guitar sounds pretty decent straight into the S1 as well but it doesn't have the 'twang' of a guitar amp, For me it sounded better when running through a multiFX pedal first and then into the S1. The F1 is way more powerful than the S1 and serves a different purpose. I would suggest taking a mixing desk with the F1 rather than plugging straight in. If you need more power than the S1 can deliver I can highly recommend you check out the Bose L1 Pro 8.

Stuart Reece, not yet. Now looking into the RCF EVOX 8 or the Bose L1 1S. I decided I don’t want to put the S1 on a stand next to the F1.

I use 2 L1 model 1S, one has the B1 and the other has the B2, I use it in a duo setting with tracks and I can tell you the low end can rattle windows and doors in 200 person room. I also use it with a 5 piece rock band and the bass player runs through the system as does drums and my guitar as well as 4 vocal mics. Not sure what you base the lack of low end on, can’t comment on the S1 pro but looks like a handy unit for small gigs, especially like the battery aspect. Also, great performance, I liked everything you played and you are obviously very talented. Greetings from New Zealand. Mike.

Hi Elton, No it does not act as an interface, however you can run a cable from the line out of the speaker into an interface and record from there. So essentially you will get the Bose EQ and Sound going straight into your interface... Hope that makes sense.

@stuartreeceband
@stuartreeceband 2 жыл бұрын
It's not the most 'affordable' if you are on a budget, Bose is notoriously expensive (here is South Africa at least). There are many other brands offering something similar for less. IE Powerworks have something called the Atlantis which is a copy of the S1 for a fraction of the price. However this Bose sounds great and I have learned that when it comes to sound gear, you get what you pay for.

Good guitarist but I have to say i thought your vocals are lacking a bit and would reccomend a peddle boss ve or something with harmoniser n looper for you ....that speaker for small background eatery like this yeah...soul destroying gigs for any performer I think ....really are..... but sayin this you probably have bigger kit for bigger venues were people wanna listen ...Can i ask does the battery last 4 hours or 11 ?
@stuartreeceband
@stuartreeceband 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Byrom, these used to be 'soul-destroying' gigs but since the rona I have a new appreciation for every gig I get to play :P But I take it you know this industry from experience. Definitely a piece of kit for smaller gigs and a luxury to have but I would not have it as my only PA for what I do. The battery is very good, I've made it passed 11 hours if I'm just using it at home to play music (Thee best bluetooth speaker I've ever heard) and it easily does a 3-4 hour live gig. I haven't tried two gigs back to back on a single charge because it's never been necessary but I think it would make it to 8 hours of live music. I'd be willing to chance it.

@stuartreeceband
@stuartreeceband 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t used the JBL myself but it has a bigger speaker diaphragm so naturally it will be able to handle more low end than the Bose, so in your case the JBL will be better for percussive style looping… The Bose sounds great but struggles for volume when you push Bass through it so you will most likely get frustrated. Unless you plan to keep your volume levels pretty soft. If you can, go demo them at a store so that you can ‘buy once, buy right’ ! Good luck, let me know what you decide on

Hi! Which of 6.5-inch battery-powered speakers can produce sounds in such an urban area near or at a great distance. Like, for example, Everse 8 in the street version? When a backing vocalist with a speaker is both nearby and from afar, his music and voice can be clearly heard at a distance of 200 meters and even further in the fifth minute of this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9WplcelrNi2nWg.html What else could be similar to Everse 8? There is no need for the compact Jbl EON One. I have been using it for 3 years and have already sold it because it is twice as weak in volume as Everse 8. You can hear it clearly here in the short 1.5 minute story kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbOAnrOE2bPLn2g.html The speaker should be loud, compact and lightweight so that the musician can transport it on a special trolley (this is also seen in the video). Will the Bose S1 Pro be enough on such a city street kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7CVjK1_zpbGkmw.html Where is another musician playing guitar and singing in Everse 8? Thank you in advance!

The bass straight into the S1 sounds pretty nice, smooth and tight, but as I thought, as soon as you push the volume the speaker craps out. I recon it will be fine to practise at home alone with it, but definitely not with a band.. Maybe as a folk duet (But it will have to be a low volumes). I also think that in the S1's price range you could find a Bass Amp that will knock the S1 out the park. Thats just my opinion and I hope it helps, but let me know what you decide :)
