But think about their early years like in Germany - they were doing R&B, soul, pop, early rock - people thought of them as pop, but that had some of every scene that was happening in the early 60s. Including "til there was you" which I always found embarassing.

True and a lot of those great musicians can't write a song beyond 3 or 4 chords! Here there and everywhere had a pile of jazz chords, Yesterday has a pile too, as they used to say, Beatle chords!

The funny thing is that the majority of Beatles songs were the opposite of 3-4 chord songs. They were quite advanced in chord and melodic structures (but they were completely absorbable for the masses). That's not something you'd say about most of these opponents' songs. But the Beatles were not technically advanced musicians. Like the session and jazz musicians Quincey would hang around. Nevertheless, Jaco Pastorius said that he was very influenced by Paul McCartney as a bass player

George Martin was the genius not Lennon or McCartney.

In fairness, a lot of those mentioned were themselves contemporaries and hence, direct competitors. It’s no different than internal rivalries between different rappers and between different metal acts

If they ever are equaled I hope to God that I don't miss it. But I will probably be long gone before that happens. John , Paul, George, and Ringo were born while World War 2 was going on. The next miracle genius band members will probably be born while World War 3 is going on.

Plenty of people that are the most known in their industry. It seems there's a tradeoff to be high quality and be well known.

Hell, I can't wait for the day that they are exposed for being mediocre.

Have listened to all kinds of music and like many bands from eras then and before, even ones similar to the Beatles, but the Beatles are EXTREMELY mediocre in comparison. I think he was jelious becaus he was no longer popular with the younger crowd . That ment no more unlimted access to little 14 to 16 yo girls. That generation moved on. His addiction to Pharmaceutical drugs was a result of Tom Parkers gambling addiction. He owed so much money that old E was his way of paying back all of his debiters. He would book 3 shows a night in Vegas . And E would get tired and when he did Tom would have the Doc go shoot him up with some speed and get him on that stage.

That list, it would seem, would include many of the bands and people mentioned here who have changed their tune as they've matured. I watch reaction videos of kids who weren't an idea in their father's balls when the Beatles came along, and as hip hop kids they find themselves transfixed by what they're hearing for the first time. They're expanding their musical vistas and knowledge just as Millennials and Zs are. The things we disregard when we were younger may just turn out to be the things we hold in high regard when we get older.

The Beatles were an overrated bunch of musically inept buffoons with an over developed sense of self worth and ability, that they just managed to appear on the music scene at the right time EARLY in Rock History and that is how they managed to become famous world wide, is pathetic.

Never were a really great live band though, and even gave up touring so they will always have that against them for being the greatest 'rock' band. I plump for Zeppelin myself. Incredible both in the studio and on stage.

To be fair, some of the Beatles turned out to also have snake like personalities once you dug a bit deeper.

Can't people just not like their music. I mean Michael Stipe was not a competitor of the Beatles...he just didn't dig it. Also Harry Connick JR seemed to grow up loving old school crooner music. That type of guy probably doesn't like the Beatles or any Rock Bands. I really find it interesting that people get offended when people dislike something they like. Sometimes people just have different tastes.

Easy there, David. The Who are still very much loved to this very day. That was early 60s Pete Townshend talking about early 60s Beatles. His outlook changed greatly later on.

Well sir you a far more brave person than I to state what believe on a comment section dominated by people who love the Beatles. I think I am one of the very few who, although there can be no doubt they had talent, It is far not as incredible as some people view it. Since I was teen when they hit the world, many people forget they, in my opinion hit the sweet spot. At the same time they appeared, there was the Vietnam war, anti social protests. The women's movement, the Black pride movement, the non-conformist movement and so their appearance of rebellion struck a chord with the pent-up desires of Americas youth. They challenge the norms of the day and swept up thousands of young folks. One cannot possibly think their first 7 songs were groundbreaking. They stayed on the charts because they were the rage that capture the mindset of thousands of young people and became embedded in the fans base mind set. Had they come about in the 50s or late 70s,80s,90s, I think their initial music would not have resonated as much with American youth. They built such a fan base that as the years went by people believe that most of the music as a group or solo they were creating was fantastic. Full disclosure , I am a Beach Boy Fan. I feel their music captured the quintessential themes of life. The guys sang about fast cars, Friday Nite romance, girl meets guy , guy loses girl, etc. The parties at the Beach. A few more themes , . Think about it ,I want hold your hand, She loves you, Can't but me love, 8 days a week. Michelle, what themes are they referring. Next you Hey Jude, 8 min. of repeating the same 2 lines over and over again,....Let it be was a protest song that struck a nerve with those who were affected by the War and of course the idea of peace in the world. The Beatles themselves said they were influenced by the music of the Fifties. After 1970 just what Music did they influence. It was the disco era about to explode. they hit the sweet spot and in person I can deliver and overwhelming rebuttal to Beatle ardent fans........Thanks for listening and ....Good luck You

The Kinks were and are still my favorite band of those or any times. That said, the Beatles were great... Ray Davies was a complete control freak and not the most likeable guy back in the day. In interviews Ray always said he was more of a Stones fan. All the Kinks referred to Paul McCartney as Pull MeCock Off. Always thought that was funny.

The Beatles' recordings speak for themselves. The collection you mention gives an insight into what the band were like at the beginning of their recording career. The evolution from the early recordings to stuff like the White Album is incredible.

The first tour featured songs from the White Album and last year they played songs from Rubber Soul and Revolver. Anyway, that quote was from long ago and focused on John. Who knows how he (or any of those still living) feel about the Beatles' music today. Would be nice to hear more contemporary quotes.

And they were genuine, outspoken fans of so many other musicians-both contemporary and earlier ones. They were openminded in so many ways.

"Opinions" are subject to critical evaluation. Elvis blamed "The Beatles" for the "Black Panthers" -- while Elvis made his career "singing Black"!? Elvis wasn't the brightest used match in the ashtray.
