This clip features the Musicians Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, amazing studio pianist, Spooner Oldham.
In 2004 we drove to Muscle Shoals and interviewed Spooner along with some of the other, original Muscle Shoals rhythm section. We did it at the second sound studio, the big one they built after all their success.
Spooner was also part of The Stray Gators, Neil Young's touring and recording band.

Love to hear ANYTHING from Spooner. When I watch him, it seems the music just flows from his fingers!! A gift!! Thx, Joe. ❤️ Side note: My Mother was a pianist, too. I watched Spooner’s fingers, and I noticed that neither he nor my Mother had those arthritic joints on their fingers. Wonder if playing has kept those gnarly things away?!!

And the International Harvesters tour 1984. Saw them with Jesse Colter & Waylon opening at Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio - The summer home of the CLE Orchestra. Yep! The sound acoustics are fabulous. I had my HS Commencement there, too. Gosh, so many memories of that venue (zips lips). 🤐

Another great interview Joe. Several years ago my wife and I took a motorcycle trip to Deal's Gap. Along the way we pulled into Nashville for lunch and there on the corner was the Musicians Hall of Fame. Of course we checked it out and spent a lovely afternoon enjoying it. At the time you were showcasing Reba McIntyre and had a exhibition on the Bakersfield sound. I was also thrilled to see Webb Pierce's Pontiac which my father had on an Album cover when I was growing up. Definitely recommend this place to anyone. Stay well.

Hi G......... hey... thanks for watching... one small problem... you went to the Country Music Hall ..... which is great. We use to be across the street from it but the city took my building by eminent domain to build a new convention center which I owned the center of on sixth Avenue.We now are in the first floor of the Historic Municipal Auditorium about 8 blocks on the north side of Broadway on 5th Ave. Thanks again for watching... I went to FAME Records this past week. Spooner Oldham wound up on the tour (somehow) with some friends of his. He sat down at the same electric piano that he played ' I Never Loved a Man' and played the iconic entry riff. Living history. What a sweet man.

Hi Joe Im a big fan of your interviews. It is so wonderful and amazing for me to see all these fabulous musicians who ive loved and followed for so long come to life in such a special way. Its like your doing the interview for us who all love them. Your use of pictures is as good as any docu style ever. I cant wait to visit and contribute. I am a radio dj . Hi Joe I saw Spooner and Dan Penn play an intimate duo gig in a church here in London a few years back. Spooner was on Wurlitzer electric piano. They were unbelievably good, I had to go back a second night to hear them again

I live for these stories after growing up with the music all the sixties. My first concert Louis Armstrong when I was three at the Shrine Auditorium in Minneapolis. My parents started a love for live music that is still going strong.

SPOONER is a class act. I drove the DRIVE BY TRUCKERS on many tours,and SPOONER would come out,and play piano. One nite i was driving my tour bus through Florance,hit a deer pulled to the side of the road,to inspect damage,before i could set the brakes SPOONER was at the door asking if i was alright...in the middle of nowhere...go figure....SPOONER didn't mention he wrote I'M YOUR PUPPET...among other hits.

The R & B back then had such a feel. There were bits & pieces of it everywhere in all kinds of styles. Jazz, rock, soul & into movie & TV sound tracks. You can still hear it today all over the place. Keith Richards solo stuff has that feel. He talks about Aretha a bunch. Of course he was using Al Green's musicians so, what would you expect. But that was the golden age back then. Spooner's discography is impressive to say the least!!

Thanks again, Joe!! Innarestin' how Spooner got his nickname. He played on many Neil songs and with many of his different touring bands including the Friends & Family group. That shows Neil loves Spooner like a brother. You wouldn't have some Ben Keith (RIP) stuff you could dig up?? 💙

Great piece of musical history. The two video clips, 1 of the Stray Gators playing and the other in Neil's Young Ranch say this is 1991 but checking Sugar Mountain it appears to be from 1992 Farm Aid 03/14/1992. Thats the only time I see Spooner/Nils/Nicolette performing with Neil. Also the clip of Spooner playing the piano at Neil's ranch sure sounds like Nil's singing.

Suggestion. Why don't you invite Delbert McClinton sometime? Not only is he a great singer with a 60-plus year career but he also wrote lots of hits recorded by major country stars from George Strait to Garth Brooks to Emmy Lou Harris, Vince Gill, etc., etc. Here's Delbert on Austin City Limits some 30 years ago in a spectacular performance.
