Drum solo -> watch "Freedom" live (its also their favourite song to perform live) For a rock song remixed with Japanese instruments as a "special" occasion (for April fools, they renamed themselves as a band and remixed some songs with traditional Japanese instruments + perform wearing Geisha attire | Maiko is a junior Geisha in training) -> Band-Maiko - Secret Maiko Lips

Fun fact. Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin attended one of Band-Maids shows and was so impressed with the drummer Akane (Ah-kah-nay) that he requested to have his picture taken with her backstage. To impress Jimmy Page with your musical skills is very high praise indeed.

Akane (ah-ka-neh) - drummer, helps compose drum parts. Kanami (kah-nah-mee) - lead guitar, composer, arranger, (very occasional) backing vocals. Miku (mee-kuu) - person who imagined the concept of Band Maid (so founder basically). Rhythm guitar and backing vocals. Lyricist. MISA (Mee-sah) - bassist, helps compose the bass lines. B-M's iconic alcohol lover. Saiki (Sa-ee-kee, almost like "psyche") - main vocalist and helps writes lyrics, although she seems to be the one who directs the formulation of a song. They have a new song coming out on December 2!

Since Thrill, the ladies have gained creative control over their music and they write their own songs now. Kanami (lead guitar) handles the instruments and Miku (rhythm guitar) handles the lyrics. Everyone else provides ideas as well but those are the main creative forces for the band. The switch to them making the songs themselves have seen a marked improvement in overall quality. Not that their early songs are bad either, obviously. As for this song, it talks about their desires for world domination through their music and being known everywhere. It also seems to be a little about them wanting to be true to themselves while doing it. The music video gives you some hints about these things as well. We must all provide everlasting love and support for the head pigeon in charge, Miku, for dreaming up this band and bringing them all together.

Excellent that the Music Shed works with the youth. Playing in a rock band kept me out of trouble in my youth. Today, I'm in my 50s playing in a "weekend warrior" classic rock cover band (still keeps me out of trouble...lol). Band Maid are great role models, showing what you can accomplish with discipline and hard work. I'd say Miku (rhythm guitar, 2nd vocal) in particular. She was in a pop "idol" group that failed to go anywhere, relegating her to take a job as a waitress at a Maid Cafe. But she didn't give up on her dream. She decided to form her own band (bringing the uniforms with her), and behold, we have Band Maid! Now that I think about it, judging from the off stage footage I've seen, it probably keeps her out of trouble too! LOL Keep up the good work.

It has been wonderful watching them grow from that talented beginning to the skilled, diverse and wonderful group of today. With each album you can see them pushing themselves to the next level. I can not wait to see where these wonderful musicians will go and grow next! There are many good groups, and many that I enjoy more than Band-Maid. ... but when it comes to just a WOW! recognition of skill and talent, these ladies are tops.

Jimmy Page saw them (2015?). He agreed with you, Akane is the bomb, told her in person... Misa’s bass tone makes it for me. Miku founder/2nd guitar was to be the singer (some training), but she’s got a softer backup voice, so they found Saiki(“psychey”) who was 19 but already had management at the time of Thrill. Over time, the main evolution was that lead guit/piano Kanami (“ka-na-me”) got producers to accept her originals rather than outside writers. So they’re her “song” constructions, But obv rhythm sections arrangements are not standard , very involved. Miku btw, harmony/callback/occasionalLead singer picked up rhythm guitar after Saiki was hired, learned (apparently from Kanami) on the job, and tho her parts are simple, she’s very reliable, key ingredient. Try these Japanese women 😉 * Lovebites - Swan Song live with intro, or * Doll$Boxx - Monopoly or * LisaX Band - One More Chance is Enough (not shown: Billy Sheehan and Shane Gaalaas guest rhythm section) Enjoy 🤘💃🏻🎸😎

Yes! Nobody ever talks about what great role models the 'Maids are for young women - actually, people of any age or gender. (Yeah the outfits can be questioned but to me it's a teachable moment about confounding expectations - no fan finds them exceptional just because of their appearance.) Not just in music, either. They have been amazingly accommodating to fans yet developed and maintained their artistic independence in dealing with the record company and management. They work well together, despite being very different in personality and temperament. They are disciplined and hard-working (sometimes *too* hard-working). They seem to be savvy businesswomen. And they don't have any drama or competition with other bands. Without putting them too much on a pedestal, it seems we could all learn a lot from them.

Miku has the vision and is a great spokes-pigeon. Akane apparently keeps things organized and flowing. Misa is brooding. Saiki has resting bitch face. Kanami tho, is apparently a workaholic who reads in her spare time, has business and finance degrees, despite joining this signed band around her 22nd birthday, records all her demos at home, but apparently is otherwise a bubblehead?! Even before she turned herself into a kickass (seriously, her speed and precision are killer) rythym guitarist under Kanami's tutelage, PLUS apparently the toughest backstory, I felt an incredible level of admiration for her. And I'm not minimizing Kanamai, Akane, Saiki, or Misa, just saying that Kobato strikes a special chord with me. I also love how O-Time has become not just a Miku showcase but an opportunity for the others to have fun and show their personalities at her expense. If you think about classic sitcoms, there's always the main character straight person who's just a foil for the zany characters. The Pigeon is both the foil AND the zaniest.

I'll be honest, I haven't been THIS into a band since I was a kid learning to play drums listening to Rush and Neal Peart. I found them more than 2 years ago, and I had the absolute fantastic dumb luck of them coming just a few weeks later for a live show. I can't get enough of them. I can hardly wait to see what your students do with their music. The tempos are so high, and the drums so nonstop busy with all the double pedals, its hard to keep up. I've spent the last two years running, jumping, squats and everything I can to get my legs moving. I'm finally up to 140-150bpm, but still struggling on the control at those speeds. I imagine a younger person would have an easier time, but it is still damned athletic. And don't you dare ask me to try to follow Haruna from Lovebites. What a beast, even if not as variable and interesting as Akane.

you have understood the soul of Ban Maid, I'm an old musician. I saw them live in a very small theater with 200 people at the most and it was truly unforgettable, I experienced the old lost emotions of the super bands of the 70s and 80s, I know everyone will jump on me, but it was like a concert of the queen with old Freddy, I had hair straight on my arms, I had Saiki at a meter from me I could hear his natural crazy voice. Akane is exceptional, precise to the nanosecond, and composes beautiful drumlines takes you away with her rhythms, and in certain songs, she does things that few would beat in the world can dare believe me. I've heard some double kick bursts in songs like Fly High or Spirit that looked like they were made by an electronic machine. Akane can do really crazy things but she can keep herself in the correct melodic context without going overboard. you made a Great reaction, you are really a music expert in my opinion.

This band rekindled my love for rock - when I first heard them it was to a live performance of a song called 'Play' from a concert in 2018 in which they had fire shooting into the air - I was literally gobsmacked - I have yet to find a song I don't like and certainly not one I would skip over to get to the next track. Regarding help for your students, if you can find them online several band members have done tutorials showing their individual skills - and on at least one CD there is a no frills (apart from the frills on their outfits) individual breakdown of each band member playing their musical instrument and its part in the song. Akane's perfect timing on the drunset, Misa's bass gives you that jazzy feeling and of course, Kanami's guitar that takes you to the stratosphere....! And... I haven't said anything about the vocal showcase of Saiki, yet..))) Miku, you're right, the little pigeon, not only the founder but main producer in the band - anything fascinating you find in the band - all adulations go to her, learning guitar, in no time, from being the main vocalist is the least of her contributions to the band...

Miku (vo/gt) does use a lot of English words and usually uses easier Japanese these days in their songs because, while you don't need to know what they're singing, they are recognized as being more famous overseas. She wants to make it easier and more appealing to overseas fans to enjoy their music. (She was featured in a segment of a popular evening talk show where they looked at people more famous overseas than here) They do have coupled DVDs and Blue-Ray discs where they show what they're playing with multi-channel video closeups so that people can cover their songs but I think those might only be with limited pressed first runs of their CDs and are now really expensive for used copies.

“Thrill” was not written by Band-Maid, but this song was. You can hear the exact moment when they started writing their own songs because they absolutely nailed their sound the first song and just kept evolving it. They had been asking their record label to let them write for themselves and the label gave in and let them write one song (“Alone”) on their third album. After that, they wrote every song themselves. So they’ve released over 65 songs since they started writing themselves. 4 full albums since January 2017 and a bunch of singles that aren’t on any of their albums. And the live versions of songs are often a bit different which makes me wish they’d release a live album, but they only ever do DVDs/Blurays. I can’t listen to that in the car, dammit!

As far as accented syllables, Japanese is as flat as (native English speakers) can get. It actually involves pitch tho! But even with a good musical ear, I hardly put a dent in learning that part. Check three ways for one 2-character word! m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fcqmptR_05nYgXU.html Since we’re on it, Japanese and Spanish always pronounce the vowels, one per syllable, only 5total sounds, same in each language. Blue is Aoi ‘ah-oh-ee’. Good Ruck!

Chris Bergsten I supposedly studied, and still the fine points are tough 😝 But awareness to be stress-flat and that pitch is even a part of language, can’t hurt, and is interesting to some musicians In fact I ignored the rhythmic differences, “syllable” concept vs Japanese more even cadence As a scientist living with linguists, it was tough to be so language inept 😕🤷‍♂️

How's the band school going? I couldn't find any follow up to this review on BAND-MAID? There are a large archives of their live performances and many with better mixing. Reach out to their amazing fan base and you'll get swamped. Hope you haven't forgotten the ladies ;) Happy Holidays! P.S. As I see so many old geezers like us getting into this band, I'd really rather see more US girls see what real girl power looks like. They work hard to master their craft, support each other, have fun and sincerely love their fans while keeping the quality of the music their goal, and not their egos. Watch an interview with them. Freaking inspirational.

Japanese hard rock bands are way more aggressive than most of the bands in other countries. Japanese rock bands’ music/songs that they compose are full of meaning, great arrangements, dynamic, and more. Great example One Ok Rock, My First Story, Uverworld. 🎸🎸🎸

For more Japanese pronunciation info than you ever asked for, here's a brief primer! It all starts with the vowels: a (ah) i (ee) u (oo) e (eh) o (oh) If you remember one thing, remember this: The pronunciation of the vowels /never changes/ and there are no silent vowels. I guess that's two things. From there you can extrapolate the other phonemes. ka ki ku ke ko, na ni nu ne no, etc.. There are a couple of tricks to some of them, like "fu" is somewhere between a full "f" sound and "hu". Like you don't touch your lower lip to your teeth when you make the sound, but it gets close. If that makes sense. I saw someone else point it out already, but now you know how to arrive at the drummer's name. The only thing missing is the accent which you just learn from experience, in this case it'll be ah-KAH-neh. Thanks for this video, it was really fun, and also really cool to see you pick up the chord structure on the fly. Hope to see more Band-Maid reacts from you one day!

Band Maid are one of the best bands coming out of Japan at the moment, and there are a fair few of them starting to do it and really good to go with that. If you like all female bands there are well over 100 all female rock/metal bands. Here are 2 for you: Doll$boxx - Loud Twin Stars (live) Lovebites - Empty Daydream Live In Tokyo 2019 But there is a mixed band that has so much talent, it should be illegal. Unlucky Morpheus - Dignity Of Spirit

Talking about growth, if you go back and watch Thrill, Miku was mostly using her guitar as a prop, having literally just started to learn. Now she’s a solid rhythm guitar in addition to her singing. Also, Misa only learned to slap after the band formed, and has created a technique to swap between pick and slap almost instantly.

in Japan there are really 2 styles of music performance.. there is this style were the band and singers are the same group.. and there are others like Babymetal where the singers are one group and the band is another group... both are very popular in japan... groups like Babymetal (one word by the way) are more of a performance group more action and synchronization.. vs Band-Maid where since they have to play instruments also it limits the ability to synchronize.

I'm a big Kanami fan (lead guitar & does most of the music writing and arrangements) so my favorite songs to show off her guitar playing (other than their instrumentals) are 'Choose Me' (solid driving rock with amazing guitar solos,) and for more rock ballad type songs I love 'Daydreaming' and 'Wonderland', beautiful songs wonderfully sung by Saiki, but with very short solos by Kanami, but MY GOD what beautiful and tasty solos they are. having professed my love for Kanami and her solos, strangely enough one of my all time favorite Band-Maid songs not only doesn't have a Kanami guitar solo, but isn't even technically a Band-Maid song. let me explain. a few years ago Band-Maid started a tradition where on April 1 of every year they would give their fans an 'April Fools Day Gift', I believe it was their 2nd year where they dressed up in traditional Maiko (geisha in training) costumes and play a song with traditional Japanese instrumental sounds included. they did the same thing the previous year but the song they did was just to cover, the second year they did an original song under this new band (Band-Maiko) that they only pull out once a year. the song that year was called 'Gion-Cho'. it was special in a couple of ways, first of course it was under their alter ego band, then it was the first original song played under that band, actually it was the only original song they played under that band, but the other unusual things were that at the time Kanami had decided she was going to back off from her duties as main song arranger and main lead player and get the other girls to help with the arrangements and take a bigger part in doing lead parts. so in this song Kanami does not play any leads and leaves it to the MISA (bass) and Akane) drums to do the rifts and lead duties, while backing everything off a little bit to give room to Saiki and Miku to do some amazing vocals. this MV is both a musical and cinemagraphic masterpiece. one of my all-time favorite songs ever.

There’s a great live versions of “Moratorium” followed by “Puzzle” that are fantastic. Lead guitarist Kanami, drummer Akane, & bassist Misa are properly schooled musicians. Kanami and Akane also play piano. From this same performance there’s the song “Freedom” which absolutely slays and Akane does a short but sweet drum solo. Band Maid are the best hard rock band on the planet and their live versions are better than the studio originals. Great review.
