Another way to remember the names of the modes: Ionian open the DOORian of the FRIDGEean to get myself some yoghurt. I take off the LIDean and MIXelidian the Aeloian yoghurt. Then I LOCKrian the door so [insert any name] can't get in.

Thanks, a great video as always. A tip some may not know. Windows has a magic standard feature called the Snipping Tool. I pause the video take a snip of the screen which can then be saved any way you wish. I keep a word page open and simply paste it to add my notes later.

Probably the best way to remember which comes first, out of Locrian or Lydian, whilst using that mnemonic is that Lydian comes immediately before Mixolydian (which itself contains “lydian” in its name).

I understand what you have said and it is useful. However, what I don't understand is what practical use is it? After all, if I'm reading or playing from a score I don't ask myself what mode is it?

whats the difference between scales and modes? what is their purpose?
@argopete
@argopete 9 жыл бұрын
Great. The patterns + the questions sent the brain gears spinning. Any mode is a step on a major scales so there is an easy way. Your circle clock is burned into my brain. I see two sharps, that is D major: root required is G, DEFG fourth step is G answer Lydian on G. Next question Mixolydian on E: Mixolydian is fifth step, EFGA (forward 4 as all add to 9) gives A major F#G#C#. Compose own question Dorian on F Dorian is second step, must be Eb giving BbEbAb Thanks a million

Ok, refreshing myself on modes and I get them! However, this is just the scales. So in the quiz at the end when you have Lydian on G, this is otherwise known as D Lydian, correct? And Mixolydian on E would be A Mixolydian, right? So when playing, are you always required to play the D chord in the first example, and an A chord in the second example, while running up and down the modal scales? Where I get lost is what is happening in the, say, left hand, if the right hand is playing the scale. Because I would think that would affect the mode.
