Fort George National Historic Site at Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. Soldiers in red coats fire muskets, clouding the air with black powder smoke. Fifers’ and Drummers’ tunes drift past blockhouses, a historic powder magazine and cannons on the lookout. Step straight from the genteel Victorian town of Niagara-on-the-Lake into the War of 1812 at Fort George, a military post that defended Upper Canada against American attacks.

As a Civil War reenactor I don’t think anyone in that crowd understood how impressive his loading time was. Not to mention when he fixed bayonets at the end. That is someone that has practiced that every day for several years.

Pete has been doing that demonstration at Fort George for probably close to a decade now. He's one of the best. I will admit to having stolen some of his better quips for my own demonstrations of the musket over the years (and yes, I have sought and received his blessing).

6 shots a minute is the highest on record, so for an average of 4.6~ shots a minute is pretty impressive. The British army for example were all expected to fire at the bare minimum 3 shots a minute, so his timing is definitely up there.

He's really engaging and fun to listen to... but good lord there was a lot of misinformation there. If you're getting a 1 in 3 failure rate on a flinter then you've either got a dull flint, fouled vent, worn out spring, or your frizzen needs to be rehardened. About 1 in 25 is a bit more accurate, although a long battle with little maintenance is going to alter those numbers. Take care of your weapon and it will take care of you.

Have read much about the period - Seven Years War, American Revolution, War of 1812. All of my information states that a well trained soldier could fire a smooth-bore musket 3 rounds per minute. Can someone please tell me where this guy gets 6 rounds per minute?!?!?!
@iangraham6887
@iangraham6887 Жыл бұрын
The popular 3 rounds a minute thing is generally the requirement of the army for full unit regimented line firing. Meaning all men, in the line should be good enough to allow for a group fire rate of 3 rounds a minute. When fire at will was called, then the 6 rounds a minute would be possible. The best soldiers like demonstrated here could reload in 9-12 seconds, if you were good, with a clean musket, and had a reliable 12 second reload rate, then you’d make 5 rounds a minute. This guy here said he’d manage it in 9-13 seconds so if you had a reload rate closer to 10 seconds. Then you could get 6.
@staliniosifvissarionovich5588
@staliniosifvissarionovich5588 10 ай бұрын
this guy would get 5 in a minute. The fastest record was 6 rounds a minute. So in the Napoleonic Wars, average is 3 per minute, 4-5 for elite soldier (like this guy), and then 6 is very rare.

erm... his musket is of .75 inch calibre. In centimeters that translates into more or less 19mm - not 1.42 - that would be much closer to the diameter of the minie bullets of the Enfield and Springfield rifle muskets of the civil war era, which were about 14.5 mm in diameter (0.577 inch)
@ISAFSoldier
@ISAFSoldier Жыл бұрын
He did say he was shooting a .68 caliber ball.....which is a little over 3x a .22, his description was fairly accurate
@JosipRadnik1
@JosipRadnik1 Жыл бұрын
@@ISAFSoldier Yes, the bullet is .68 caliber, which is about 18mm and a quench but the bore of the musket usually is somewhere from .72 to .75 (the bore of the muskets of the time vary greatly). All in all, both bullet and bore are in the 18 to 19 mm area - not 1.42 mm. 1.42 mm is about .57 in inches. Believe me, I own two original muskets in .72 calibre as well as two reproduction .577 calibre 1853 pattern Enfield rifled muskets and - being a continental european (unlike the presenter here at Fort George) - I am used to measure in meters and centimeters.
@JosipRadnik1
@JosipRadnik1 Жыл бұрын
... ps: at 10:45 he says, that the french used a .52 calibre ball out of a .59 calibre musket. Which is wrong again - it's a .62 calibre ball out of a .69 calibre musket (tranlsated into the metric system that would be somewhere in the 17 to 18 mm area for bullet and bore respectively) Apart from those minor errors in measurement the presentation is very good btw.
