7 жыл бұрын

The Atheist Experience 21.31 for August 6, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty and John Iacoletti.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZfaq comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZfaq comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I can tell from his accent that he's grown up in a very multi-religious part of the UK, where that sort of jump doesn't mean you're more gullible than religious people who don't jump around. It's just that the situation is very different to mono-religious places where if you doubt your own religion, you naturally tend to default to none. In multicultural cities in England, a young Hindu like him would have gone to school with Catholics from Poland, Anglicans from Nigeria, Muslims from Pakistan, Buddhists from Sri Lanka, and Sikhs from India (usually meaning their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were from there), with no particular religion being dominant. Non-religious students will typically be the slight majority but among the religious students, there isn't one dominant, even if you lump different protestant groups together. There was another caller, with a typical inner city London accent, who said if he wasn't a Christian he'd probably be a Muslim. That sounds strange to people from mono-religious places but in his environment it's not exceptional.

I was 70 years of age when I finally left religion, and now I believe as did Stephen Hawking (before he died) that the universe always existed naturally ... no god in existence. His story reads as perfectly believable to me. His accent sounds like he's from one of the areas in England with a lot of Hindus, Muslims and atheists (most of whom will describe their "religion" or cultural influences as Christian, Hindu, Muslim in surveys but their "beliefs" as atheist in the same surveys) all living amongst each other as the most common beliefs. Being raised Hindu but being surrounded also by atheists and Muslims, there's nothing surprising about that conversion, just as there's nothing surprising about Mormons in Utah converting to other demominations of Christianity because those are what they're most surrounded by.

@@hamidman6974 It's pretty difficult to confirm some fictional or fictionalized characters don't exist or even never existed. You can point out the contexts of the conception of the character, or the logical absurdities, paradoxes, implausibilities, impossibilities, or embellishments of their depicted actions or composition, but that wouldn't verify they don't exist in some form beyond investigation anyway. Imaginative authors could have lucked into describing a real referent somehow even if that wasn't their intentions. Even though there's a remote possibility that something proposed does exist, to paraphrase a recent Kurzagesagt video, assuming it does exist just because there's little to no evidence against it is a simple trap we should avoid. Explaining that to someone that's already firmly invested in or culturally conditioned to accept such cherished concepts may be a lost cause though.

@@MarioMarioBW I agree with you. But, to believe something, there needs to be reasons to believe so. (unless you blindly believe) For us to be, for this universe to exist, there must be an uncaused cause. An uncaused willing cause. Which we call God. An eternal creator of everything. There must be a "first mover" which must be uncaused, eternal, willing. That's the God I believe in. The Creator of Everything.

@@hamidman6974 Philosophical sophistry & unwarranted assumptions are pretty much the rabbit-hole of reasons many choose to freefall into. We don't know if a self-created, eternal, first moving(?) beings or entities are possible. It could be, the universe may even be an example or result of one, but we don't know this & have no way to verify this as far as I know, if ever. The issue isn't the vague concept of a god, an über-super supreme being, abstract personification/ representation, or creative/manipulative/destructive force, in itself per se. It's the superstitious suppositions, treacherous traditions, cultural constructs, psychological ploys, mythological memetics, deceptive drivel, & Simon Says that are added on to it that potentially cause real harm. People sacrifice themselves & others for elaborate lies & charismatic cults using these very notions as justification. Keep yourself safe from all that if you can please.

Sam's argument boils down to "The Quran said it's the word of God, so it must be the word of God." If you don't know how we came to be, that's where you should stop talking and not assume a 1,400 year old book is true simply because it got a few things right here and there. If you think that just because it got a few things right doesn't mean the whole thing is right. I'm sure you wouldn't agree that it's moral to kill the non believers, right? If you do, you're not moral. God is a myth until the day we find irrefutable evidence of its existence. The Quran is not proof of God the same way a Superman comic book is not proof of Superman. It's common sense.

I'm going to claim there's a new God (as it's new I'm open to suggestions for a name for this new God ), that aside my concept of this new God differs from other Gods who are Gods of love or Gods of peace as this new God is conceptually to be thought of as a God of irrationality …..the doctoring of this new religion will only have one law which is to be known as "The law of attraction" the premise of which states " The size of an unwarranted claim is inversely proportional to the irrational argument of the person it attracts" and will have a saying, borrowed from "I think therefore I am" , which will be expressed as " I didn't think therefore I am right " ….. I know this came from my new God because someone had to have said it and ironically that statement proving that irrationality exists which I think trumps the notion of something being outside of existence and also gets around the problem of special pleading as irrationality can be shown to exist ….....… a suggestion for a second saying maybe " Explain unto others what thy can not explain unto thy self " ….applications for the job of pope will be posted at a later date

It's astonishing how so many people find it so easy to disbelieve God and believe that we came from nothing and all this order in this world and all amazing creatures and most of all the amazing human brain and the amazing processes we are surrounded with like our own creation-from a microscopic sperm to a lump of meat to bones and embryo and then to a 6 feet tall muscular giant and thousands of similar processes like photosynthesis, respiration, the image making by the lens in our eye and retina-- and all this amazing design that we are surrounded by has just come from 'nothing'. It has developed 'itself' and everything is just happening itself. It is so obvious that there is a supreme intelligence that has created and is sustaining all that is in the heavens and the Earth. He who has created and set in place all the laws in place to the precisest degree possible-- like the law of gravitation and all other laws. Everything is in an extremely ballanced proportion and if it changes even a little bit destruction would ensue. In each of His creations no matter how small or how big it is are numerous signs-- whether it be as small as the DNA or an atom or as huge as the planet we are living in, everything is just utterly amazing, miraculous and an awe inspiring work of art. But sadly Atheists just want to kind of shield themselves from all the infinite signs this universe has for us and rather prefer to believe that all this vast and amazing universe just came from NOTHING. What I think is that Atheists have some kind of complex that forces them to think that believing in God is irrational and believing in fallacies like nothingness and evolution makes them more rational to the society. Even if we believe that somehow life originated from nothing and big bang occured from nothing, then it's an even bigger fallacy to believe that all these diverse creatures-- plants, insects, reptiles, birds, Humans who are so unsimilar in nature just somehow magically came from a common ancestor-- I mean it's easier to believe that Unicorns are real than to believe in the things that Atheists have invented and people are following them blindly.. However they would soon know the reality they were so stubbornly denying and the day of judgement that they used to disbelieve so that they can live life by their own will and cause mischief in Allah's land. Just as God says in Qur'an: "Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by false hope, for they are going to know soon(their fate)." Qoran 15:3
