The Supreme Court today delivered a critical judgment on the rights of Muslim Women to Alimony ending decades of political debate around what has come to be known as the Shah Bano case. The Judges made it clear that a Muslim woman, just like any woman from any religion, can apply for maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPc. The court rejected an appeal by a Muslim man from Telangana who did not want to pay his divorced wife monthly alimony. Amid this big verdict, which will invariably open the doors for a new debate on a Uniform Civil Code, we speak to Hilal Ahmed, political researcher and scholar who has just published an important new book - A Brief History of the Present, Muslims in New India.

Yes it is political interpretation. All the rulers or invaders in medieval invaders were central asians (Mughals,Turks) they had got nothing from India. So the statement that Muslims killed Hindus is wrong. This is like saying Christians killed Hindus from 1857-1947 as all Britishers were Christain. As Indian Christians have nothing to do with Britishers even the Indian Muslims have nothing to do with Central Asians.

Why do you not raise 'condition of parsis' in india.'condition of boudh on india'.. ' condition of jains in india..'.. ? And this law should have come in 1947..law of alimoney must be secular is a no brainer.. why it took govts 70 years is the question. BJP tried working for Muslims & taking them out of their problems, but unfortunately it's opposition & Muslim Clerics hv made entirely a Hindu hate politics which unfortunately the Muslims public also bought their narrative. they should ask before sachar committee, it was always the congress which governed the country. Why should any community(whatever religion) depend totally on govt to improve & reform their society? Yes, some help is needed from govt but what are the educated & prosperous people in their own community doing for their own people? Something like what reformers in Maharashtra & West Bengal did in late 19th & early 20th century because of which women's situation improved significantly.

Sp was in power in up, mamta is in power in Bengal and Hyderabad is the center of owasi! Why is muslim situation bad there also. History is always an interpretation of historical events, facts. What do you mean when you say it's an interpretation? Whatever happened in mediaeval India should be acknowledged by everyone so that we can move on peacefully. You are a very regressive man if you want it pushed under the carpet. I agree that lynching should not be tolerated at all and people involved should be punished severely. The problem is that Muslim leaders, not Muslims in general, have issues accepting even the wider and rather loose concept of Hinduism as the dominant cultural force in the subcontinent. It is that fear that led to partition.

Whenever such discussions happen everyone pretends as if partition never happened. Is all injustice happening with muslims only? When country was partitioned on muslim nonmuslim lines is there any moral basis of muslims demanding preference or even equality in India? Only party that talks about this angle is BJP. Rest are just doing their best to capture muslim votes. This is what politics in India is all about. So no I don't think muslims are politically abandoned. All parties in India are catering to muslims votebank. Doesn't look the author even knows what being abandoned feels like. It feels like when BJP felt when it couldn't prove a majority despite being the largest party 1996 general elections in India which started a long era of coalition govts. in India. I think in the current arrangement everyone who wields his Hindu identity is more in danger of being abandoned than the muslims in India.

How and how far Muslims are themselves responsible for their abandonment as a political class is a moot point that needs to be deeply investigated.
