Three of the 12 semi-finalists in the 1991 GPA Dublin International Piano Competition chose to include this composition in their semi-final recital: Sergei Tarasov [USSR], Giampaolo Stuani [Italy], and Alan Gampel [USA]. The audience was treated to three quite different interpretations.

Mussorgsky never had any formal training in piano yet able to compose this piece of music...... And in a short period of time! Amazing !!!!!!!! !

Une des plus belles oeuvres pour piano de tout le répertoire russe : l'expressivité réaliste de Moussorgsky trouve toute la rigueur et la virtuosité requises. Un grand talent et un moment de bonheur immense en l'écoutant.

Never heard it this fast. To me, this piece is full of bells on the painting of the imaginary Great Gate of Kiev. Bells on the tower of the gate. Bells of the animals and people passing under the gate. Maybe this would be the gate at rush hour......

Your comment got voted off, but you're damn right. I'm a composer and I like to maintain tight control over what my music sounds like. If someone wants to "cover" a piece, it'd be awesome if they did whatever they wanted to it, but if somebody's just performing a piece, they'd better do it exactly how I wanted it, or it's an small insult to me. Not that I don't want them to get into my music, but every piece is a child, and if they start doing plastic surgery to its face, I'd get pissed.

I heard/saw [score] Horowitz' arrangement [today] and it's implausible, though plausible for Horowitz. But point taken. If you change notes around then it's your transcription and not text -- same with literature.

Yes, but Ravel's interpretation was actually what prompted the piece to fame, because of its more accurate pictoral descriptions. Either way he presents an interesting view.

As a former pianist, my approach was to perform every notation the composer placed in a score out of respect for their genius. What lies in between those notations however, that is mine . . .

It's quite a shame that more people are familiar with Ravel's orchestral version, more often than not people hear the orchestral version prior to hearing the original piano version (myself included). I think people tend to judge the playing based on the orchestral version, which is itself Ravel's interpretation. He orchestrated the work to what he thought was most fitting, which might not necessarily be the intent of the composer. Anyway this is merely someone else's take on the work.

it's part of the so-called "finger memory"
@ekrium2772
@ekrium2772 8 жыл бұрын
+feddsp No, finger memory is the least reliable type of memory. These concert pianists can play the pieces inside their mind away from the piano, they remember every key to be pressed mentally.
@themike97_58
@themike97_58 8 жыл бұрын
+ekrium It goes like this: 1) Play the music with the music in front of you 2) As you learn it, you get it into muscle memory 3) As the piece is muscle memorized, you start remembering exactly what you play. 4) Eventually, you remember the entire piece. 5) Perform the piece! Total hours: 75+ at least For me this process happens a lot faster than it does for other people. I personally don't believe in memorizing gimmicks and tricks and such, I just play the piece so much focusing on detail that the piece effectively memorizes itself.

He starts Bydlo pp instead of ff and misses out the repeats in Goldenberg und "Schmuÿle". I'm happy to pass off all other deviations from the original score in this performance as mistakes, but these two are yet another example of "professional musicians" deciding through sheer arrogance that they know Mussorgsky's masterpiece better than he did, and feeling they have the right to "edit" it as they see fit. Performers exist to bring the notes on a page to life, not to misguidedly corrupt them.
