Are you ready to master the “wall of sound” that is rock music? Professional mastering engineer and Berklee professor Jonathan Wyner teaches you how to master a song with iZotope Ozone, covering key aspects of rock music like the co-relationship between bass, guitar, and drums, the distinct tonal balance curves of popular rock music to look out for, and how to EQ the low end to create a loud, cohesive rock track. From dialing in the limiter to widening the stereo image, these essential mastering concepts will help you master your next rock song and can even translate to other genres.

Another very informative video. The song sounds so good before you even do anything, it was fun to try and guess what you were going to do during playback. One sentence gave me an AHA moment that I should have already realized but didn't: the slider labeled Transient and Sustain in the maximizer are now firmly in my brain as attack and release settings. Thanks for that.

Great episode! There's also a whole wide world of composers doing epic orchestral composing. Think 2-steps from hell, movie scores, fantasy and trailer type of music that involves the use of the orchestra and choirs in there too. Do you think you can include that type of music to master in an episode too?

I had my headphones on from mixing a current song I'm working on. As soon as I heard the song AS IS given to you, I knew the Engineer that handed it off knew what he was doing. Funny enough, watching this video, there were a lot of "HEY....I do that too" moments. It's so weird to think that I as a Producer/Engineer, can see someone I've never met before treat a song the same way, with the same "tricks". That's just so weird. BTW, those $3,000 CANS on your head are nifty.

Wow, that’s a cool song. After writing and tracking a song I always skip the mixing and mastering stages. By the time it comes to mixing and mastering I’m exhausted working on the song. Love your input though. Definitely will use this channel to learn more about the right way to mix and master.

Hey, John, quick question for you regarding caulking. What are your thoughts on the clocking of Antelope Audio interfaces? I’m not referring to external clocks like their 10 MX clock, but more to the oven-stabilized internal clocking of audio interfaces. Antelope touts it pretty highly as very stable and practically “mastering grade.” Do you have any thoughts, opinions, or advice on this topic? Thanks in advance!

Great series as usual, fantastic inputs all the way. If you need ideas for future episode I would suggest a few things I would be really curious to have your opinion and insight on: transparent noise reduction, how to ;=) choosing the right monitor for mastering, Problems of phase with cut filters or why linear phase eq, Defining a vocabulary for mastering music, The low end genre by genre, Do you really need multiple monitors and a monitor system for mastering? So many important subject that nobody really speaks about. Thank you very much for all this work

Great video. Thanks for sharing! By the way, I loved the track. I'd never herd of The Dahus. I Googled them and listened to their 2013 (sadly) debut and only record wich sounds awsome. Couldn't find any other info about the band on de internet. In 2015 they sopped doing live shows. They simply vanished. I would appreciate if anyone has any other info about this band. Thanks!

There is so much lush disturbing mid frequency reverb in the mix. Seems the guitars have any low ringing release from any distortion effect at 500Hz like brown noise. Seems the voice use the distortion effect of the guitars in low frequencies as well.. hard core mastering job.

Hi Mr Wyner, how do you get high frequencies above 13kHz up to 17kHz under control? Nearly everyone above 60 or much sooner loose it's ability to hear above 12kHz.. Did you have hints or tricks how to get the top end under control?

@@platterjockey TV's used to produce a pitch around 12khz. An instructor of mine back in the 90's used an oscillator to show that around 12k the signal dropped off a little for most people as a result of the exposure to the frequency over time. But as you pass through the bandwidth, the signal grew louder again. well, not for the kid that had impacted ear wax, he couldn't hear above 13k. So if you can't hear above 13k, maybe check your earwax situation.
