Yes, they do attract moths and butterflies so much they can decimate my young lantanas with their caterpillars. I've had to start spraying BT on mine before there's nothing left. Thank you for the pruning lessons. Is it better to remove all the deadwood and open up the inside (I am going to try to keep mine on the smaller side in a planter) or aggressively cut back the entire shrub into the living wood? Thank you!

Do you have a video for various plants that attract butterflies in hot weather like Florida? Thank you.
@VargasLandscapingPresents
@VargasLandscapingPresents 3 жыл бұрын
No video yet but some plants that attract butterflies in Southern California, where the humidity is low, are Asclepiadaceae. Let’s just call it milkweed, like milk. It should grow okay in Florida, but it could be affected by the high humidity in Florida. You can plant it and see how the plants will respond. The milkweed should do best and another that may be affected by the humidity is Buddleja davidii, also called summer lilac, butterfly-bush, or orange eye. Look out for power mildew, which is a fungus that attacks the foliage. It looks like a dust on top of the leave. Also, some species of Verbenas (look out for mold) and lilacs attract butterflies. Many plants are affected by fungus due to high humidity. Thanks for your comment and good luck with the butterflies!

Love yoUr since of humor and natural common sense approach. Question: do the dead branches you put under the bush make a home for insects like spider mites, aphids and earwigs?
@VargasLandscapingPresents
@VargasLandscapingPresents 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Sherrie! Spider mites no because they are usually on the foliage of the canopy of the tree. Earwigs aren’t really a pest on plants but they are a part of nature on the ground. Aphids no because they attack the young leaves and new growth of the plant. All the cutting will eventually become mulch keeping moisture in the soil and becoming organic fertilizer in the soil, recycling the minerals .

How do you make it grow upward not spread horizontally
@VargasLandscapingPresents
@VargasLandscapingPresents Жыл бұрын
If it’s a shrub lantana you can make it grow up by cutting the lower growth and selecting the branches that are growing up. If it’s a trailing lantana they grow like a ground cover or low grow. It’s almost impossible to make it grow up. A shrub lantana, yes! But, the best thing is to select the right variety that would grow upwards.

@VargasLandscapingPresents
@VargasLandscapingPresents Жыл бұрын
As the lantana needs it. I’m just kidding but lantanas are in a way drought tolerant plants. In Southern California, and the plant is establish do a deep water once a week or if it’s a drip, 2 hours once a week-make sure there is mulch around so the sun doesn’t evaporate the water. 3 inches of mulch.
@solarwinds-

Thank you. My Lantanas are very sad looking. Lots of healthy leaves but no blooms. She gets all day sun. I feed her every 2 months with slow release flower food, 14, 14, 14. Maybe she needs a prune? What do you think Vargas? BTW, you're very funny but I agree that putting the branches on the ground is good for mulch, but you're very funny. Love you.
@VargasLandscapingPresents
@VargasLandscapingPresents 11 ай бұрын
It could be bad drainage, too much water or not enough water. Or you’re pruning the top of the plants too often because the flowers bloom at the top of the branches. I appreciate that you like my Costa Rica or natural sense of humor!

Lantanas are not plants to plant in pots. They grow as trailers and grow too wide. To keep it pruned in a small pot, you need to do heavy pruning which is not the best thing for the plant. You can give it a try though!
