I did something not too long ago that was fun, revealing and helped me to get rid of clothing that didn’t fit my style. I drew a line down the middle of a sheet of paper. I titled one side “things about clothes that I don’t like” and the other side “things about clothes that I love”. Some examples on left side were 1. Clothes that I have to keep adjusting 2. Tops that are too long 3. Jeans that are too tight in the legs 4. large, bright patterned clothes 5. Neon,and brown or tan or black colors 6.sleeveless tops and many more in this list. Then I did the same with the right side of things I love. 1. Pastel colors 2. Tops with hems that curve up at sides 3. Gray 4. Denim 5. Lace and small ruffles 6. 3/4 sleeves , and so on. Then I did the same with shoes, then lingerie and sleep wear, then outer wear, jewelry and accessories. The lists were long both pros and cons. I really got specific. Then I took turns putting each category on the bed and compared each item with my list. Afterward I knew why I only wore 20% of my things. Got rid of 80%. I know this was too long!

About 8 years ago, I had 120 pairs of shoes! Of course, I have acquired new ones since then, but after selling most of them slowly and donating others and wearing some down, I’m down to about 35.

Great video! You have such a calm/peaceful sweet voice to listen to! I love your closet organization and helpful suggestions on decluttering/downsizing! The first video I watched of yours was the one where you helped your mother declutter her spring/summer closet! I don't wear belts anymore because of not having a waistline! Haven't gotten rid of them... working towards a slim figure again! From Washington! Thank you for sharing your ideas and videos you created!

I agree with you about not washing clothes until they are really dirty. Right before I watched this video I decluttered a storage closet i my basement den where I keep extra clothes I'm not sure if I want to declutter or not. I decided it was time to declutter some of it again. I have about 3 trash bags full of clothes to donate. Your other video where you helped your mom inspired me to help my mom again go through her clothes since it's time to go through seasonal things and change out her closets. She got rid of 2 large trash bags of clothes! I'm trying to get my husband to declutter some things. He's better about decluttering clothes than he is other stuff. :( He's starting to do better though so I will keep encouraging him. LOL :)

You are on a roll! It warms my heart that the video inspired you to help your mother, too! My mom will love to hear that as well. And I’m with you on the husband topic - mine is good about clothes - but all the other stuff is another story. He is doing it a little at a time. I wish he would move faster - but everyone has to deckutter in their own time. And it has been good to teach me to be more patient 😊

I rolled things in my chest of drawers. I have an empty drawer now! I need to refold some camisoles now, the way you did, I think they will stand up better. But it's great! I can see everything at one time- I rolled/folded sweatshirts where I can see what's on them and can now see them all at once, don't have to lift them up to see underneath! It's amazing!

Always enjoy your videos. I've paired belts down to one brown/ one black to wear with jeans. I have one chain belt to wear with a dress. I also hang jammies and robe on hooks in closet also. I paired jammies down to 2 warm/2 cold weather. I look forward to a video on jewelry declutter! 😊

I'll share a tip, if you're not worried about style vs basic functions in the mens/boys sections you can find a reversible black /brown belt!

As we age women need to realize that we can become adjusted to smells and may not realize the top they wore a few times without washing may be over sprayed with the perfume/cologne they like to spray on before leaving the house. Have you ever had an older woman walk by and they about knock you over from the cloud of perfume that follows them? Belts? I have a few for as I lose weight they help keep my jeans in place until I get down to the next size. 😉

The only reason I started wearing a belt was because I lost weight 😂 since that went out the window and I wfh now I keep a couple just in case. I just replied this but will share, I use a reversible bk/br belt from mens section, so 1 is 2.

What a refreshing and totally honest video. This is exactly how to do it. I too have just embarked on the mari kondo method . And my god it was brutal but totally worth it. I’ve just got one coat to get rid off and then I’m on to the footwear .

I watched your video about helping your Mom declutter. And today this one popped up and i enjoyed both so i hit the subscribe button. You have a very calming manner. I have recently decluttered jewelry but still have a lot more. Some nicer costume and some more expensive things too. I am almost ashamed of the amount i have. But i am itching away at it and also my wardrobe. And i love love love Crocs and just got 2 new pair!

Yes, belts a big trend 2023 and 2024. Oversized belts over oversized sweaters of overlapped blazer. Defines a waist on a dress or over a tunic and under a cardigan or blazer. Accessories very important to add polish and style: shoes, belt, purse, s cc arf, head band, sunglasses and jewelry define style end are great opportunities to add unexpected colors.

I like decluttering but have found it harder to change my shopping habit of shopping just for fun, especially garage sales and thrifting for clothes. Working on that now in a low buy year.

Understandable - you might try thinking about replacing some of your shopping time with some type of meaningful experience that you never seem to have enough time for - like visiting with family or having coffee with an old friend. I don't even own a belt anymore. I could borrow one off my daughter if I ever needed one. Those are the nicest crocs I've ever seen. I just bought a proper pair of gardening shoes after spending years getting my feet wet outside and working in wet socks.

I like the idea of putting empty hangers on the side. I will do that now, I've been keeping in the color scheme to hang clean ones back up, but it's too frustrating. Great tip , for both things, clean and almost clean!

I understand the shame. I also feel that because I’m good at decluttering but often after a year or two I’ve repurchased it all back 🙁. I’m now on a low buy journey. I’m curious how you keep the inventory low when it’s so easy to buy stuff now. I want to be a better steward of my money and time. Thanks for the video!

You are on the right track with your low buy year. The way I keep inventory low is I just don’t go shopping… just because…. (I used to - but not anymore). And I don’t shop for clothes online. I only go shopping if I need something. I have discovered other activities, for me, that are more meaningful than shopping. Plus - I would much rather spend my money on experiences, rather than on clothes 😊. Good luck - You Can Do It! Another reason to not wash every time you wear: I wear layers due to uncertain temperatures, so I wash the layer that was against my skin all day, but don't usually need to wash the outer layers the first wear.

I have to wear belts - otherwise, I'm pulling up my jeans/pants/skirts all day long. I'm a rectangular body shape. I assume that is why I have to. Leggings are the only thing I can get away with not wearing a belt.
