Ratchets And Wrenches

In this video I am going to go over everything you need to know and consider before buying new wheels, especially in regards to performance. I will go over how the rotational weight of your wheel is important, I will explain what is unsprung weight and how it effects handling and acceleration, we will go over how to size new wheels when it comes to wheel width, what is wheel offset and also what is positive and negative scrub radius and how it effects your performance and lastly what should the diameter of your new wheel and tire combo be when compared to stock and how a low profile tire might effect your driving experience and handling as well.

Very well said. I have a Toyota Highlander that I bought used, the previous owner put these ugly chrome rims on. I found a pair of OEM rims at a Toyota/Honda junk yard, and performance is a lot better, it does better on gas, handling is so much better, it’s just been a win/win all around. The after market rims were even the same size and still. If you don’t like the stock rims on your car know what you’re doing before you change them.

My cars wheel numbers are 205 , 65 , R15 but in the winter time I go 205 , 70 , R15 it’s a little more of a taller tire gives my car some lift clearance it helps in winter when there’s lots of snow on the ground. The tire just fits in the wheel well so 70 on the hight is about max

Been trying to figure out why my 04 Pontiac vibe is so loud and bumpy. I feel like I feel and hear every little bump in the road even those seems that you sometimes have every 20 feet or so. I put factory 17” alloy rims and tires (215 50 17) on it. I don’t have much to compare it to since the 16” tires (205 55 16) were pretty shot so I replaced them right away and found the factory 17’s for a great deal. My 04 matrix with a 100K more miles (255k) rides smoother in 16’s

The sooner this oversized wheel fad dies off the better. Sidewall gives better mpg, a smoother ride and far more protection from potholes. #SaveSideWall
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 4 жыл бұрын
Smoother ride and pothole/etc impact protection from taller sidewalls is true, but better fuel economy is not, all else equal (same wheel weight, tire width, diameter, similar tread compound and design for same rolling resistance). That greater flex of the sidewall with every rotation of the wheel, that smooths the ride, also creates a slight extra drag and loss of efficiency. Granted it is not much if you keep your tires properly inflated.

My Subaru has 17" rims and I want to change to 16 or 15 and put thicker tires for offroad performance. Could you please walk me through the thought process for how you adapt the tires? the standard tire size ratings don't seem to include the overall radius or diameter of the tire. for example 225/60r17... I am not even 100% sure I want to do this because obviously it would mean having to buy new wheels and possibly it just makes more sense to buy more aggressive all terrain tires at the standard size for my vehicle. I am just an occasional weekend warrior after all and I'm not keeping this car forever. But this problem is interesting me, I would like to understand it and figure it out. Also it seems very difficult to find the weight of tires and rims. To be honest it just seems like tire regulations are in the dark ages and the stuff you need to know you have to hire a private investigator to figure out. Thanks for any help. Brilliant video, I subscribed although I'm pretty sure you're diving deeper into car magic than I need to go in your other videos. Loved your explanations in this video, thank you.

I've heard a bad scrub radius will also cause premature wear on the ball joints and tie rod ends. Also the from what I understand the taller sidewall tires are better in the snow. I know that narrower tires cut through the snow to the ground better but would you be able to explain why more sidewall is better.

Great advise and the best advice you are going to get. Do not listen to your local armchair racing car drivers. This guy knows what he is talking about. I'm into very luxurious cars with a very comfortable ride. However the modern so called expensive but often cheap luxury cars have air suspension fitted, just to compensate for just some of the problems related to their very low and hard profile tyres. And you are paying for all these modern fashionable overengeering trends in our modern cars. Just stick to what the manufacturer makes for your car and buy practical cars. And for those so called lead foot drivers who don't want to, then they are fortunately protection by speed limits on our roads which restricts even the standard cheap car from using most of it low performance and power.
@rangersmith4652

Offset is the factor most people fail to consider, and it makes all the difference in safety and handling. How many people looking to "upgrade" their wheels (often called "rims") even know what their factory offset is? The best bet is to simply stick to wheel/tire combinations that the manufacturer offered on the model. For example, if your car has 17" wheels and 65-series tires, but there was an 18" 60-series option from the factory, changing to the latter will work fine unless the suspension also has differences between the two wheel and tire options, which is unlikely.
@williamwhite9767

Larger diameter tires also reduce the mechanical advantage of the brakes since the pads are farther from the tire tread potentially increasing stopping distances. Wider tires decrease the aerodynamics of the vehicle reducing speed and fuel economy.
