If you don't drink, you might as well work overtime. I would feel like dying if someone kept insisting to drink and be offended if I refused. Paying my share for things I didn't want would be the final straw.

I'd add one thing that you might have taken for granted. Don't sip your drink until after the toast. My first time out drinking with friends, I went in as soon as my drink arrived like I'd normally do alone and I think they felt I was rushing them. Also, for anyone that doesn't drink, I'd recommend asking for oolong tea. Every place I've been to has it.

Just a tip in case you plan to widen your intercultural experience: most of Europe also practices the „start consumption after all members of the party have been served only“ system. That goes for drink as well as food. There usually will be some kind of phrase said before everyone starts eating (like bon appetit in French or Guten Appetit in German) or drinking (like cheers). It will be different for every language of course. And it will be less ritualistic with non alcoholic beverages. Nevertheless it can be seen as impolite to disregard the customs entirely. Also, there will be certain customs regarding the holding and placing of eating utensils that will differ somewhat from country to country. But there are ways to place your cutlery on your plate that will signal to everyone at the table whether you are done eating or just taking a break. My mother has been telling me about this Brazilian coworker of hers who doesn‘t understand the concept regarding the utensils and every time they have lunch with their team, she keeps everybody at the table for way to long, because the way she places her utensils when she is full makes it seem like she is just taking a break 😅

Im six months too late to know about the taboos on nomikai 😂 But its really the only way you can talk to your colleague here in Japan 🥲 They dont really talk about outside work unless its in a party especially to gaijins...

Also here in the Philippines, we also say “Kanpai” when toasting our drinks! Except that it’s not really only beer that’s served, but also soda, iced tea, etc.

That is very fascinating. In the U.S.A., having dinner ẅith the bosses is not much fun either. You want to have fun but you also want to put your best foot forward. You feel pressure to impress the bosses and your co-workers.

It is less common here in Germany but many of these rules apply to formal dinners and upper class social gatherings too. It’s very interesting to see the similarities between cultures in that way

I always made it a point to limit my drinking to two beers if I was with higher ups. If I drank anything at all. A party with bosses is NOT a party. It's a minefield. Nurse your drink, be polite, chew with your mouth closed, and get out.

I find this so interesting, i have read that in old norse culture they considered what was said while drunk to be more truthful or pure then how people normally express themselves. When you factor in the archeological fact that agrarian cultures organised around creating beer before they were creating bread, and then understand that humans can smell ethanol from a great distance and then on average process it internally far better then most animals by a factor of 5 or 6 it seems alcohol is far more culturally significant then many would like to think. Another great video!

Sounds like a way to Network in the business, rather than a way to necessarily enjoy yourself. I must say tho, as an high-functioning autistic, I honestly appreciate the structure and rules. Here in the west, it's also common to drink after you "Kanpai", and is considered rude to put your cup down without taking even a sip. So I see this video as just an extension/additional practices. ありがとうございます。

Hmmm very helpful. Not doomed as I thought I would be. Even though I don't drink, could still pour for others and toast with Gingerale Soda. 😎🍻💋 PS Employed people spend over 60% of their time "at Work" which is why many Western Career/Job searchers talk about not only Work/Life balance but finding a Job with enjoyable aspects and compatible co workers when possible and at the very least avoiding turly Toxic work culture.

The pressure of attending a nomikai was higher back when lifetime employment was a thing. Nowadays with less job security and even younger people choosing arbaito or being freeter, some of the younger generation may care about nomikai less.

Yeah, I remember when my boss, myself and co-workers went to some drinking parties here in Oslo. It was typically for special occasions, say a contract or finishing some major project. Other times it was just us guys (not the boss) having a shindig at Fridays, end of the week. And it was for special occasions, say before a concert or something. That was years ago, so I’m not familiar if it still happens.

There's no formality to it, but in the US it's not that uncommon for the corporate team culture to include a night out at the bar a couple times a month, particularly with office/tech work. People won't hold it against you if you decline, but showing up at the company drinking night will often get you looped in with people from tangential groups that are helpful for moving your projects along, so there are advantages.

Hi shogo, my sensei spent a few years in japan back in the 80s and he told me about san kai nomi, that is going to 3 different places to have some drinks. I wonder if that's still a thing

Nothing like alcohol to make us all friends. I wish I could find it, but there's a great video of an anthropologist partaking of a Spring fertility celebration in a small rural Japanese village. The ritual involved drinking sake and jumping into cold water... Some things are universal.

I’m curious as a plumber, how would things like this be different for a person who works a blue collar job. as compared to all of the popular office jobs over there. Is it a very different setting and less formal as compared to a corporate party?

I'm not Japanese i kinda understand it as a respect thing. My mother raised me to have respect especially when out eating, for example. You don't start eating if your food arrives before someone else's, you wait until everyone has their food. If you're at a big family gathering and everyone is being served food or serving their own, it's women, children and elders first, you wait before being served or serving yourself. If there's a toast you sip after toasting. If you're drinking and getting up to grab another drink for yourself always grab the other person one as well or at the very least ask even if their drink is full

Western viewpoint here with apologies as I ask. Japanese seem to l pour beer with a large amount of head ( 5-6cm) . From a western viewpoint, it seems like restaurants dont want to serve as much beer and reduce cost. This much head would be almost criminal in Ireland with Guiness 😅. Do Japanese really like this much foam head?

come on Shogo, not waiting for the bill actually has a very practical solution. is it not common for a group "not so kouhai" to be responsible for watching the partial bill and taking care of the people that has to leave early? so if i have to run for any reason, i just pay a partial amount to the cashier and let the person in charge with the receipt... so it's all cool, right??

and then the group will slowly getting shorter... and then the group can continue in another bar and keep going on and on.... dunno, seems natural and easygoing and i have another big no-no: DONT EVER START DRINKING OR EATING BEFORE THE HIGHEST HIERARCHIC PERSON IN THAT TABLE - but i guess this goes naturally by people paying attention... and the initial kanpai marking the go time... isnt it?

Words can have multiple meanings. I'd translate 'kai' here as 'meeting' or 'gettogether' but we'd only know for sure if we're given the kanji for 'kai.'

I just have a comment that it's a shame many of the younger generations cannot see parties like this as not only a way to communicate with others at their jobs but to view it as their superiors are appreciating them for all the hard work they do at their jobs.

I personally wish, that Western take more over about japanese way respecting Rules to communicate with each others. Of course youngsters are not very keen of Rules, but these are also to respect others... this Rules we're not difficult at all to follow - very easy and simple...

I think there's more merit to the Japanese drinking parties which many westerners may not like to admit. People dismiss the consumption of alcohol as just substance abuse, but the traditions and culture around drinking in company has been a mainstay for thousands of years. I do believe that you go through a kind of bonding experience with other people and getting a little drunk together. It's a way of letting your guard down in the company of others and expressing some vulnerability with eachother in a way that is hard to do while sober.
