In this video I am going to explain thoroughly the difference between premium unleaded gas and regular unleaded gas, I will explain what the octane rating on these fuels mean, whether it improves gas mileage or not, should you put regular gas in a car that recommends or requires premium gas, or should you put premium gas in a car that does not require it in order to save money on your gas bill. I will also explain what Engine Knock or Detonation and what Compression Ratio is and how it relates to whether or not you should use higher Octane Fuel.

Iman, what do you think about 87 octane gas in an LS460? I once put E-85 in my Malibu with the 3500, the check engine light came on and the trac control turned off but the car ran great, with poor gas mileage, only 24mpg.

Best video I've seen all week. I own a sport bike (CBR 600) Compression Ratio 13 or 14 to 1. Driving in the mountains one day. Only gas was 87 Octane. Bike was "pinging" or "knocking" so much I thought the engine was going to break apart

Chris Freemesser this is actually a great question. I myself only by top tier when I can purchase it at Costco because it's usually the cheapest price around. I seem to get slightly better gas mileage when I use top tier.

Put 87 in at shell in nearly anything you'll feel a difference. Exactly why, I have no idea. Stock Ford Probe GT (2nd gen v6) I trained a passenger to tell what octane I was running, reliably. The rpm drops quicker running on 87 and the car cannot be driven as smoothly. This will literally ruin everything under the hood over time without detonation. This worked on my 93 and 94. I used to run 87 when I was low on cash. Now I've got the higher compression engine it's 93 octane only. This might work on a 626 with a v6 and mtx. You can drop the clutch quicker and it drives smoother on high octane. Like there's more energy behind it.

I live near Denver and here the altitude is about a mile high from sea. The lowest octane is 85. Ive been told that since the air pressure is less here, 85 octane acts like 87 octane. If a car requires 87 octane, is it safe to fuel with 85 or pay a little more for 87?

Good video. Thank you. A side note to this is people almost always misread their owner's manual. Every manual I've ever read (for cars that run on regular gas) state 87 octane minimum. Key word MINIMUM. That doesn't mean 87 octane is mandatory. It means 87 octane is the cheapest you can get by with. I've always bought 93 octane or higher when available, and I always get higher MPG's than the window sticker showed. As well, my cars have always run perfectly, and not one fuel related problem ever in thirty years.

I bought my 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser in June of that year. Found out that its okay to run regular gas and I was getting a smidgeon over 20mpg consistently for about 3 years. After 3 years my FJ was just barely getting over 19mpg and often times getting only 17mpg so I chalked that up to the way I was driving. But my driving habits are pretty much the same however it was curious that I'd consistently only get around 18mpg and getting worse. So I decided to use Premium gas just to try something else and it not only bounced back to 20mpg but I was getting as high as 21mpg. Is there a theory that anyone can come up with as to why my FJ won't get 20mpg anymore on regular gas? On my last fill-up my low fuel light came on at around 301 miles and I tacked on another 30 miles before I refilled with Costco Premium gas. All I could fit without overflow was 15.75 gallons on a 19 gallon tank capacity. So that yielded just over 21mpg.

The problem is that in some areas, gas is watered down or diluted with various other materials that it is hard to have a consistent measurement of what fuel should do what. In my experience, my naturally aspirated engine gets 3 to 6 miles per gallon more efficiency than using regular. Also, the transmission shifting can maintain lower RPM's during acceleration on the 91 gas than with regular. I have no engine knocking or strange performance. Im very in touch with how I drive and apply acceleration to maximize fuel economy when I can. Anyone can figure this out?

Hi..my mini cooper s have negative st fuel trim here in Canada..december started to get cold...can i lower octane rating from recommended 91 shell to 89? Will this solve the negative fuel trim assuming all other causes were ok

I enjoy your videos, thanks for the info. However I keep politics out of my professional life, unsolicited political comments usually are not appreciated, doesn’t really matter the political affiliation. If you want to start another channel do it. While you might be surprised what my affiliation is, I don’t think this is the channel to throw remarks out nor from this channel should you care.

I’m down to watching two you tube channels, the car doctor and Mr. Subaru. I have stopped watching any KZfaq or TV shows that are pushing a political agenda. Pretty soon I’ll only be watching hockey until they push some political agenda, then I’ll cease watching that too. Stick to the quality auto content.

Suppose you do a mix of the two? I have a car that recommends super, but doesn't require it. What I like to do is refill my tank at the half mark with super every other fill. In my crazy little mind feel like I'm getting some of the benefits of super, but still saving a little money. Worth the hassle?

@@MrSamadolfo Nope that's just a waste. I just wait till a quarter of a tank and fill with 87 (I fill at a quarter and not E so that way the fuel pump is still lubricated)

So should I stop using shell 91 V power on my Honda Accord 9th gen V6 ... ? Can the engine get damaged if i start using 87 like the car manual recommends?
