2 main reasons: 1.Defense is stronger than offense in this game, so playing first gives the opponent a chance to make great defense to gain advantage and will also give away information first. These two drawbacks are severe in pro matches 2.Heavy decks function better during double elixir

One other possibility: Bad starting hand (but generally this is not the case)

So why would X Bow Master do that in the first game when his deck was cheap and had Miner to start? Also if you play a card the opponent has to play a card to deal with it, meaning playing first gives you a chance to see what the opponent has. Obviously dropping a Golem or Pekka as your first card would be terrible, but none of these decks are sitting on that many expensive cards. Also if they're waiting for double elixir time why wouldn't they wait till the actual start of double elixir time? I've seen multiple matches and it's only Asia that does this and they always wait for 30 seconds to a minute.

Then this is not the case of reason 2 but reason 1. The problem is that, you have to leak information first if you play first, no matter what information you can get for your first play. Remember, they are pros, so they can always find a good answer to your first play in order to leak the least information and gain the most advantage.
