Great job Jeff, especially on those springs. I have a spring compressor that mounts to the spring perch (saddle) that works great. The pucker factor is still there but I have never had great luck with the hook type that you used. I’ve got a lot more cleaning to do up front before I start to install the new stuff so it’s very cool to get a preview of what it’ll look like. Plus I have to weld up the holes a previous owner put in the shock towers so they could grease the suspension 😕

Thanks for the videos. It helped with confidence in replacing the suspension parts on my 73 Maverick. INTERESTINGLY... One of the upper control arms were not assembled correctly. The center bar was off center by about 1/4". It was easy enough to remove the outside nuts and get it correct, HOWEVER... could installing (or making) them off center on purpose be an easy way to achieve some negative camber? Have a vendor ship you an upper control arm so you can try it and see how easy it would be.

I couldn't get enough squash out of my spring compressor to install my new springs last summer for love or money. I made one the type that uses the the spring perch and the top of the shock tower and it worked nifty and seemed to be ( at least in my mind) a lot safer.

Yup. Most shops won't buy the alignment programing for cars older than the '80s. And techs don't know how to do the alignment using custom specs.
@farmerjim-fat-man-do
@farmerjim-fat-man-do 3 жыл бұрын
For everybody on the fence about upgrading the suspension on their early Ford, the camber kit, roller spring perches and adjustable strut rods (I prefer the hiem joint version) are must haves for any old SLA suspension. All this installed along with the Shelby drop makes a night and day difference in handling once the alignment is dialed in. Worth every penny for the extra parts. Add some Koni red gas shocks, good set of springs and some decent tires and bam..Race Car! Or a predictable and fun driver that no longer pushes through corners like an overloaded milk truck. Not sure what’s available for the ranchero but will you be installing any kind of bracing up front like a Monte Carlo bar, export brace and Boss 302 style crossmember similar to what’s used on mustangs? The extra stiffness from the bracing prevents flexing and really keeps the alignment in check during hard cornering.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 жыл бұрын
It is already wearing the engine crossmember, I will be doing some additional bracing at the area where a torque box should be. MIGHT show that on the channel, depends on how far I throw the first set I make. LOL We are going to brace the area where the stock tower braces are too.

So I have a 63 Falcon Futura V8, I just took it to a shop where a guy was willing to work on an older car. I needed a front end alignment and so I bought replacement parts for it from Car Krafters. Well, once we tried to replace the parts they did not fit. We are thinking previous owner whom I cant find had changed out front suspension. Is it possible to change a falcon suspension to say a mustang suspension. We cant find any numbers on the tie rods ect. Any suggestions on where i begin to figure this out.

Working with springs always scared me. All that stored energy waiting to release if that spring slips off the compressing tool. I see plenty of videos on compressing the springs, but none on UN-compressing the springs while they're out of the car. What the safest way to un-compress those springs? I sorta lay it on the ground, run a rope through it and tie it to a tree, get everyone out of the area, and start cranking away on the tool. Spring always seems to flex into a curve or sorta "U" shape.

When I installed my springs, I did exactly as you did , but mine have very little tension on the top where the shock towers mount. Should they be that loose or do I need other springs?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on if the springs are a lowering spring. Also, if the car doesn't have any any engine in it, it will sit higher and could lead to it having a loose spring.. Also, make sure you put the isolator on there, and that will remove some of the looseness.

You’re right about finding shops that will align shimmed front ends. I dropped my Fairlane big block car off after being assured they do alignments on classic cars. I get a call a half hour later that they can’t get the upper control arms to move. They are brand new. I get there and it turns out the nuts are hard to get to with the 390 and factory GT manifolds so they won’t do it. What a joke these guys were. Ended up taking it to an old shop with some grey haired mechanics who had it done in 45 minutes.

Could you clarify please? there are plenty of examples out there of strut rods snapped off after installing poly bushings, so it's for sure a valid issue.
