This comprehensive tutorial is tailored for musicians and producers of all levels, delving into the soulful groove of The Commitments' rendition of 'Mustang Sally.' The tutorial covers all instrumental parts, including drums, bass, rhythm guitar, piano, lead melody, and solo improvisation. Throughout the lesson, we will explore various aspects such as rhythms, bass lines, chord voicings, rhythmic comping, melodic improvisation, and a detailed analysis of the piano licks found in the studio recording. The goal is to empower you to craft the perfect part for your specific technical ability and context, whether it's within a band, as an accompanist, or for solo piano.
The rhythm never stops, allowing you to jam in the pocket and learn in the groove!

I am an older person, turning 89 in 2 days. I started teaching myself piano about 5 years ago. I do ok and have done much research on KZfaq for instruction. Your instruction is far and away the best and most professional that I have found. Thank you.

Dear Artist, You know, these scales and tunes you play touch me deeply. I was born with music in my blood, and this particular style was a part of me. I used to play by ear, but for some reason I stopped. However, thanks to you and your method of transmitting music that resonates with our spirits, I feel this flame rekindling within me. After 35 years of abandonment, I have much to learn from you. -Thank you from -Algeria !

I'm only 75 and I concur with all that Northglenn1 said - and I love that you put things in context but one thing I would ask: it's great to have the keyboard above that shows the notes you play more clearly but it would make things even easier still if you had the kind of software that also shows the names of the notes above the keys - it saves so much time and eyes wearing out trying to see the all the notes especially with fast run-down. Other than that your lessons are wonderful!!

Thanks for the suggestion, the other bits and pieces (e.g. organ, fitting in comping patterns with guitar, making arrangements) are like that last 5% so probably not worth a whole video on - It's all good I'll cover general concepts I missed in future tutorials! Cheers for the comment!

Have you done any videos on 12-Bar Blues soloing? Keys of E, A, D or G??

Short answer: not specifically Here is my 12 bar blues shuffle tutorial in F: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j6d6Y7l-npraYoU.html Here is a funk tutorial in G7 (similar elements will relate to the 12 bar blues pattern): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adWSopmUm7-3kp8.html Funk tutorial in E minor: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ma6IgcJqmreUnok.html I put a spell on you (Dm) - not quite a 12 bar form but similar: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLp4YJSFrtnLm2w.html Here is a 12 bar shuffle groove in G: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqxxjc6ru9qppac.html I'll note it for the future, but focusing on a few other resources over next few months including more song tutorials and ear training :) Cheers!

Can you tell me the software and tech you use to make this video? I’m a piano teacher and would love to be able to use this type of thing during lessons. Great video btw!!! Thank you for doing this!!!

Hey Sarah thanks for the feedback - it's turned into a bit of a time consuming process but it's really enjoyable! I am doing everything pretty cheap, so using my 2014 macbook pro and my phone to film - I also use a 2 channel PreSonus audio interface for the mic, midi and guide track piano. So my 'script' is writing up ideas on Musescore and using them in sequence as a guide. I particularly like the format of the New Real Book and this video has helped me get closer to that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdFlmLR9tpyYfmQ.htmlsi=eozCiI9IsZao_wHs Then I record into pro-tools intro, mic, guide piano, and MIDI - because I had a lot of latency I listen to my guide piano in headphones when recording. I record to click and with a piano sound - yes even for the drums! I film with my phone (don't forget do not disturb mode!!), and also I use a website for the midi visualiser chord-display.rednet.io and capture this with screen capture software OBS Then there is quite a bit of audio post production where I overdub speech where I've made mistakes as well as putting the midi signal onto all the other tracks to get all the sounds Once the audio track is finished I hop onto CANVA and create all the images for the lessons using cropped images of the musescore original script I then use VN video editor to create it all - syncing the video footage, screen capture keyboard visualiser and the audio and overlay the CANVA images! Yes it's all a bit over the top but my goal is work towards making timeless resources that can support people for years to come so I feel the effort is worthwhile (plus I learn a lot of cool skills as I go) I hope that's not too overwhelming, but it's taken a while to work all those elements in together Any questions let me know, and good luck in your creations!!

Hey unfortunately I haven't done an arrangement like that specifically but did a quick search and there are plenty out there. My recommendation is play the bass line in the left hand and chords on 2 & 4 with the right hand. When it goes to the G7 before the break I play this in 8th notes just to build up to the break Once you have those patterns down, when you are confident add a bit more rhythmic variety with chords, and perhaps even some improv lines that respond to the vocal phrases. But remember most listeners are following the voice not the piano, so you can keep it simple and grooving until you are ready to branch out! The key is keeping the bass line solid and having the chords accent on 2 & 4 - particularly as you are working without drums, the 2 & 4 will for keep up the momentum and the groove! Good luck :)

I can definitely hear the major 3 in the opening guitar solo, I sort of just grace note it on piano. I think that major 3rd is prominent when the chord is on A but it's flattened on any other chord - I've just posted a little demo of how I would go about interpreting it on piano - but you can probably simplify left hand if you are working with a band :) Good luck and let me know if you have any follow up questions! I'll aim to do a video in A at some point :)
