I came here thinking I'd do a video of how to do this. Your video is so clear, there is no way I could do it better. Thanks! By the way, the plastic window panel that stays with the lifejacket inevitably becomes brittle and degrades. Is there any solution to that, aside from buying a new lifejacket?

Question: How is it decided that 5 years is the maximum amount of time before replacement of cartridge is necessary? Is this the US Coast Guards decision or does the manufacturer decide? Im just wondering since CO2 doesnt expire, and if there are green lights on both the cartridge and cap, why wouldnt the PFD reliably inflate? Are there parts in the cap that can degrade in 5 years time? I cant find any data on the matter.

P.S. it seems like it should be the cost of the manufacturer to replace unused, but expired, caps and cartridges. Not the consumer. I'm surprised Mustang couldn't produce a mechanism with a longer shelf life, especially considering the price... but let me guess, "survival has no price"?

I will replace mine on schedule but if you are curious I just pulled mine out of storage and tested them. They were 10 years out of date and the both inflated promptly when thrown in the water and held under.

@@MustangSurvival The crucial thing missing from this video is that you first need to OPEN/UNLOCK the NEW hammar inflator cap BEFORE trying to mate it with the inlet valve. This would have been super helpful if this was included (probably should have been mentioned somewhere around the 7-minute mark of the video).

@@JoshMerklethank you for your feedback, we appreciate your input and understand the importance of providing comprehensive instructions. Could you clarify which instruction you are referring to in our owner's manual? chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--1tTQbCCL--/xqbfaihkintqk9a2tfbc.pdf With the re-arming process, you do want to be sure that the mating process of the hammer cap and the inflator body is done without turning the center shaft of the new inflator cap to ensure the proper functionality of the new rearm kit. Looking forward to chatting further.

@MustangSurvival Sorry... that link looks broken/suspicious, so I'm not clicking on it. What I'm referring to is... when i went thru the steps of re-arming my kit, there was no mention about needing to OPEN the little black nob that the guy talks about in the video about putting your thumb down on and pushing down on to lock in place. So... I spent a good amount of time trying to re-arm the kit 'as it was' before finally trying to open it with the key and then trying to place it on and push down with my thumb/finger on the black piece. I'm talking specifically about the 7m:03s mark, where he grabs the inflator cap and places it on top with the inlet valve and then at the 7m:27s mark he places his thumb on the black ring and pushes down. PRIOR TO THAT, there was never any mention about OPENING the inflator cap with the tool/key... so how would a user know they need to do that, if this was their 1st time?! This was my ONLY PROBLEM with the video. The rest of the video was spot-on and perfect for a 1st time noobie such as myself. But this part was a key missing part of the info, that cost me about 20mins of frustration.

Fyi, i just bought 3 used vests with manufacture dates of 2009 2014 and 2016. I tested all of them in a bucket of water and they all inflated. Unfortunately that's when I realized that the replacement kits are $75 -$130 each. When I was researching them before buying them I wrongly assumed that they all took the basic CO2 canisters that come with BB guns. This was an expensive lesson. I may end up just leaving them full of air or topping them off when we go paddleboarding. Don't be me. Ugh

Hey Jon, Sorry to hear about this! Yes, the HIT might not be the best fit for paddleboarding. Hoping these come in handy for some summer boating adventures! If you do have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out.

A lot of wasted plastic and annual maintenance costs add up over the years. Disposable expensive product.
