Under the Big Tree

Күн бұрын

The Mutable Instruments Plaits Macro-Oscillator is a powerful and terrific-sounding new module. With 16 different algorithms, a built-in lowpass gate, and extremely musical parameter control from knobs and CV inputs, this module has enough variety to keep you exploring for years to come.
In this episode, we dive into Plaits, going through every algorithm, explaining what each control does, and most importantly, listening to the instrument. By the end of this nearly hour-long episode, you should have a good idea about the power and expressive possibilities of this Eurorack module.
mutable-instruments.net/modul...
Under the Big Tree is Nick Peck's KZfaq channel, focused on music and sound design equipment and techniques, composition, production and performance of music, modular synthesizers and electronic music in general, and tabletop board games.

That's one of my main complaints with guitar demos - of which I have many complaints - "I'm going to demonstrate this great tone to you" then the first thing that happens: they start the drums, drowning out any chance of hearing the tone of the guitar amp.

I learned so much by watching this video, and not only about Plaits, but also how one might apply LFO's to a module. I don't know why anyone would give this video a thumbs down, but I am grateful. I programmed the opening notes of Bach's Art of the Fugue into my Mother 32, patched the KB out into the V/OCT input on Plaits, modulated the "Morph" and "Timbre" of the Wavetable Oscillator (thanks for explaining what "interpolation" does in this context!) using slow LFO's (one from the Pittsburgh Double Helix, and the other from the Mother 32). I then ran the main output and aux output into the Strymon Magneto and proceeded to have a lot of fun with just these few elements. Thanks again for the wonderful video. As a novice in synthland, it is very much appreciated.

Good thing you talked about the built-in low pass gate (LPG) right from the start. It took me months to discover that, and it's one of the most important features. [It does not do anything on the three drum algorithms, though.]

great review! @48:00 you mention how you have the Level patched to your sequencer to get accents on the drum sounds. Does that mean you are sending triggers on the hits that you want to create accent on. If so how does this relate to your trigger pattern that you are using for the Trig input.

Howdy! You’re the reason I bought the Verbose Complex-which is my favorite oscillator. Which leads to my question for you: is it redundant to have 2 verbose complex oscillators or should I get a different complex oscillator so they can compliment each other in the mix? Thanks.
@UndertheBigTree
@UndertheBigTree 4 жыл бұрын
Well, now that is an interesting question. I am of two minds. First of all, I like having duplicate modules that I really like, because I've done all the work to really learn it, so I can leverage that work to use the duplicate to its fullest. On the other hand, there is something to be said for having a lot of flavors. It's tough, because it is a significant purchase. Let us know what you decided to do...

What is the sequencer you are using? Could I use an arturia keystep or a korg sq-1 to control the oscillator? How would I do that?
@UndertheBigTree
@UndertheBigTree 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not using a computer sequencer in conjunction with my Eurorack system, if that's what you are asking. My most used sequencer is the Doepfer A-155, but I also have a number of other units I have built from kits. If your Keystep or SQ-1 have analog gate and pitch outputs, you can control the Plaits unit directly. Otherwise, you would need a MIDI-CV converter to go from the digital signals to the analog voltages required by modular.

What filters play well with Plaits? I love the module so far from using in VCVRack and want to put one in a real system but not sure what kind of vcf and eg to pair it with.
@UndertheBigTree
@UndertheBigTree 3 жыл бұрын
You know, the beauty of Eurorack is that you can really blend anything with anything. If you already have VCF and EG modules, try those. If you don't like them, there are so many alternatives out there. And fortunately, Plaits is one of those modules that does so much on its own that you don't even need a VCF or EG to get started with it...

What do you have going into the level while you're covering the drum sounds?
@UndertheBigTree
@UndertheBigTree 6 жыл бұрын
In that mode, the level jack is used for accent. So if you send a pulse into level, then it will play a drum sound that is a bit louder, and possibly a bit brighter or slightly different sounding, than ones that are triggered from the trigger input. This notion of accenting drum sounds is extremely important in creating more musical rhythms, because it separates the pattern into strong and weak beats. Check out my video on clocks, pulses, and musical time if you like - I get into this quite a bit there.
